The Vermont Democrats publicly criticized Governor Phil Scott yesterday morning (10/6) for his recent call for a “clean” continuing resolution (CR) to end the ongoing government shutdown, accusing Governor Scott of “side-stepping his responsibility to stand up for Vermonters.”

“While our congressional delegation is in Washington fighting to protect tens of thousands of Vermonters from losing access to healthcare, Governor Scott is offering no solutions,” says Vermont Democratic Party Executive Director May Hanlon in a written statement posted to Facebook.

“As a Republican in Vermont, who has served in both the legislative and executive branches, I know how difficult it can be to reach across the aisle to build trust and cooperation, and how much it irritates activists and ideologues in both parties,” said Governor Phil Scott in his letter to congressional leaders.  “I also know it can be done well and that it delivers better results for the people we serve.”

The Democrats accused Scott of aligning with President Donald Trump’s agenda, warning that his proposal could jeopardize health care access for Vermonters. Supporters of the government shutdown argue that the changes in Medicaid are mostly in the application process, not in eligibility. Vermonters may have to verify their eligibility more often.

“He advocated for a ‘clean’ continuing resolution, or temporary funding bill, that would allow Trump to continue implementing his agenda & rip health care from Vermonters,” the party posted on X, with a series of images outlining their take on Governor Scott’s letter.

One statement reads, “Vermont Democrats believe that we must put people ahead of politics. It’s clear about where hyper-partisan extremism is coming from. Republicans in Congress and Donald Trump, Donald Trump and his extremist allies have chosen to shut down the government rather than work with Democrats to protect Vermonters.”

Another image cites data from the Agency of Human Services, estimating that Scott’s approach could cut health care access for 46,000 Vermonters, a figure touted by all three congressional leaders.

“The Republican budget will mean that the price of health care premiums will spike for millions of Americans,” the statement continues, “Vermonters are already paying some of the highest prices in the world, and under Donald Trump and his Republican enablers, basic health care will no longer be affordable.”

“Democrats showed up to negotiate and stop a shutdown while defending healthcare. Republicans refused, and Phil Scott has chosen — once again– to side-step his responsibility for Vermonters,” writes Hanlon. We need real leaders who understand what’s at stake and are willing to fight for the people they serve. Phil Scott has shown that he is not the leader that this moment requires.”

“A government shutdown helps no one – except the political parties – because it weakens trust in Congress, burdens families and communities, and deepens divisions,” says Governor Scott’s full letter to congressional leaders. “The founders of our Republic warned of the dangers of these divisions. President Washington, in his Farewell Address, cautioned that partisan factionalism would ‘distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration,’  as well as inciting dangerous animosity among the public and inviting foreign corruption.”

Governor Scott continued in his letter with historical warnings of division from early Presidents, writing, “President Lincoln reminded us that ‘a house divided against itself cannot stand.’  These warnings – issued long before America’s politics could be corroded by the partisan weaponization of cable, the internet and social media – speak directly to our present and it is my most sincere hope that you will heed them on this issue and others.”

  1. This is more Democrat disinformation from out DC Delegation, if the spending is continued under the same wording as we have been dealing with all year, nothing is being cut for citizens covered under Obamacare. The only thing that was cut from the BBB was the ‘Emergency’ funding added to the ACA, Obamacare, during the COVID debacle was not reauthorized, all of the original ACA funding continues. Schumer as this boot lickers are having a temper tantrum because they couldn’t stop the BBB at the time it was on the floor. Fixed: Thousands of Vermont residents that crossed border illegally will loose health benefits!

  2. OK, Libs. If Gov. Scott was such a Trump supporter, why did he say no twice to Trump in regards to sending Vermont troops to places like Washington, Memphis, Chicago or Portland? If he was a Trump “yes” man, troops would be there already.

  3. The real reason that tens of thousands of Vermonters will lose health coverage has nothing to do with the Federal Government. The real reason is that health insurance companies can’t afford to do business in Vermont. MVP left last year and now Blue Cross/ Blue Shield is leaving. Instead of looking at DC for fault look to Montpelier.

    • You are so right…I checked out the Medicare Advantage Plans a couple days ago. Vermont has very limited plans. The plan we used last year has more than quadrupled. Vermont is becoming a state for only the rich!

  4. The Democrats know that they cannot force a new version of the House passed bill
through the Senate. Even if they did it would get stuck in a conference committee. All while this foolishness continues, the government is shut down. Of course, our two Senators don’t give a rip because they aren’t worried about a paycheck. Why do they pick a fight that hurts the people they profess to serve? Has the Bad Orange Man driven them nuts?

  5. Will United Heath Care be leaving Vermont next year ?????? Enquiring minds would like to know.

  6. Fun facts: “The last time the U.S. had a balanced federal budget was in Fiscal Year 2001, which occurred as a result of budget surpluses during the Clinton administration, supported by economic growth and budget reforms like the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. A balanced budget means that the government’s revenues, primarily from taxes, equal or exceed its expenditures.”

In 2023, economic aid accounted for 88% of foreign aid obligations by the U.S., while military aid accounted for 12%. (US News January 27, 2025)

    1 Ukraine $17,193,710,403
    2 Israel $3,302,860,882
    3 Jordan $1,686,862,605
    4 Egypt $1,503,609,426
    5 Ethiopia $1,457,374,911
    6 Somalia $1,181,033,990
    7 Nigeria $1,019,947,490
    8 Congo (Kinshasa) $990,456,757
    9 Afghanistan $886,536,741
    10 Kenya $846,303,488
    11 Mozambique $776,819,594
    12 Syria $762,793,444
    13 South Sudan $755,501,999
    14 Colombia $738,778,592
    15 Yemen $733,316,883

Neither party will admit a national deficit of $37+ trillion isn’t a problem? They also will not admit that funding to foreign governments hasn’t stopped at all for decades. Both parties are beyond reproach – good cop/bad cop – flip that script! There is no business like show business. There is no honor among thieves.

    • Interestingly Dems demands to reopen Government are FREE Healthcare for those that crossed our borders unlawfully, $500 million in media handouts, $50 BILLION CUT to American rural and native reservation healthcare and hospital funding, resumption of DEI and climate scheme funding! Interesting is the cut to healthcare for rural citizens. Media and Congressional Dems saying increase in 2026 Health Premiums are due to shutdown and not reimplementing COVID Emergency Funding when the plans and premiums needed to be submitted to the Government for approval last July
