Road rage incident on I-89 ramp

Vermont State Police are searching for the driver of a dark-colored Audi SUV involved in a road rage crash Sunday afternoon on Interstate 89 that left a Fairfax man injured and his vehicle heavily damaged.

Troopers from the St. Albans Barracks responded at about 4:30 p.m. Feb. 23 to a report of a crash on the northbound Exit 20 off-ramp.

Police said the incident began as a road rage encounter and escalated when a vehicle, believed to be a dark-colored Audi SUV with a roof rack, sideswiped another vehicle and forced it off the roadway.

The driver of the struck vehicle, Brian Hathaway, 40, of Fairfax, suffered minor injuries in the crash. His vehicle sustained significant damage, according to police.

Investigators said the suspect vehicle fled the scene immediately after the collision, traveling east on Highgate Road toward the Swanton-Highgate area.

The driver remains unidentified, and no charges have yet been filed.

State police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about the vehicle involved to contact the St. Albans Barracks at 802-524-5993. Trooper Andrew Underwood is the investigating officer. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
