My compliments to Willard Randall for yet another contribution to Vermont’s history. This particular effort is well worth the sixteen minutes it runs and should be required viewing for anyone claiming to be a Vermonter. Thanks to VDC for running it.

New York’s ‘…eviction of settlers who either refused or could not afford the fees…’ smacks of today’s heavy-handed Vermont legislators. And the dichotomy between Ethan Allen’s more ‘libertarian’ views of Deism, and the strict Puritan sensibilities of the establishment government, is also interesting to ponder in today’s context.
Joe, your recommendation that this video ”…be required viewing for anyone claiming to be a Vermonter”, is an excellent case in point. As enlightening as this video may be, and as much as I personally appreciated seeing it (thanks to VDC), the Green Mountain Boys would, I suspect, not approve of any such ‘requirement’.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Ethan Allen – Vermont’s mad lad – became a man in Cornwall VT, was imprisoned in Cornwall UK, cheered on by Catholics in Ireland and ended up in Burlington VT.
He did good work, that boy.

The government did not learn. Ethan Allen fought back as did the Colonists. Perhaps it’s time for history to repeat itself.
