Video: Christian worshippers harassed on State House lawn

Worship leader Jess Letourneau has a loud whistle blown in her ear by a member of an LGBTQ+ protest group April 14 at the Vermont State House. Cellphone video contributed

In a cellphone video taken Saturday, April 13, opponents of a prayer and worship presence outside the Vermont State House in Montpelier can be seen blowing a noisemaker into the ear of the Christian worship leader (at about the 34 second mark) while many others bang on pots and other loud devices.

Supporters of the Don’t Mess With Our Kids prayer gathering said a large, loud crowd of opponents gathered shortly after the music started.

Don’t Mess With Our Kids is a national group, concerned about growing trends in trans programming and teenage abortion, wanted a prayer presence at every state capital. A spokesman for the other group said they knew about the 50-state initiative and were there to oppose the Vermont prayer and worship presence.

The scene was reminiscent of the group of anti-police agitators who descended on a July, 2020 “Back the Blue” rally at the State House lawn. Speakers were unable to be heard due to noisemakers, and police did nothing to stop the disruption.

Someone who was there told me –
“There were about 20 of us that gathered on the Statehouse lawn and sidewalk to Worship and then pray for the children and families of Vermont and the nation.

“With our permit in hand, we were not expecting any issues other than the chance of rain. Just as we were beginning, a group of people began arriving. As our worship leader began playing, the group, (continuing to grow in size), began banging on pans, blowing whistles and using a bullhorn and “white noise” machines. They pushed their way into our group on the steps and tried to drown out our worship music.

“A few of them released piercing noise into the ears of several people who were surrounding the young lady playing her guitar.

“We continued to stand our ground without reacting to the other groups bullying tactics towards us. Within about 15 minutes of our starting the other group was at least double our size and were doing everything possible to get us to shut down and leave.

“The other group was large, well organized and intent on bullying, and injuring the hearing of the women who had gathered under the banner of Don’t Mess With Our Kids.”

Eventually, with support too little and too late from Montpelier despite having a crowd permit, the prayer group left.

Glenn Taylor, who can be seen directing the noisemaker away from the worship leader at about the 36 second mark, expressed disappointment with the police response – or rather, the lack of it.

“At issue was that the police didn’t move the harassment away from our gathering at the Statehouse. They allowed the harassment to continue within our personal space.

“The police took about half hour to arrive and we had already been involved for about 25 minutes before that. I first called State House Security and the call was picked up by the answering service. They did not tell me that there is no security on the weekends.

“I then called 911 when there was no response from the State House Security. When the two officers of the Montpelier police arrived, one officer spoke with someone from the opposition for a few minutes, while a number of us were still trying to box out (a basketball move) trying to keep the harassers away from surrounding a young lady who was leading worship.

“The officers didn’t really seem to see the need to separate them from pressing in upon us. When the leader of the gathering and myself spoke with one officer, he warned us not to touch them. etc.

“I requested if the officer could get them out of our space and he said they could not! And then only after strongly compelling and pointing out individuals to the officer, did he go to a few of the opposition and give them a warning.

“At other Capitals where there were problems, the police kept the opposition out of the space and separate from those involved with the gathering.

“According to the ACLU, if there are two opposition groups, the police can separate them especially if opposition group is not enabling the other group to do the presentation. They both have the right to speak.

“With all this we do believe that there was a witness of Christ love and of His glory! I told some of the opposition that we had actually come to repent and ask God’s and their forgiveness for not always representing Christ to them! We agreed with them that there needs to be more done to protect and help the LGBTQ people and I was also able to apologize for some of their hurts, and told an individual that abuse that was done to him was not right.

“For several minutes the worship leader was in Intercession of tears. I know that many who were at this meeting received an even greater burden to pray for the LGBTQ people as individuals to receive the love of the truth and receive our saviors great love and healing.

“It came to my remembrance that after the passage of gay marriage in Vermont, how the Lord had allowed gay marriage in Vermont because He is going to receive an even greater harvest from this community that are in need of His love into His kingdom! We are actually not complete without them!

“They will know we are Christians by our love, by our love… yes they’ll know we are Christians by our love!”

  1. Yes, that would be the Vermont Chapter of Antifah Wannabe agitators who worship the self-righteous secular religion of relativism, and harass all organized religions except fundamental Wahabbi Islam, of course, which wants to kill every infidel in the west. They tend to smell of incitement, paranoia and patchouli and are only respectful of leftwing causes because they’re really cool and inclusive. What pathetic creatures, poor victimized alphabet people. Oh, how I wish I was there because I wouldn’t have turned the cheek and would have trashed some of their toys.

  2. “Someone who was there told me…”? Not what I would call impartial journalism.

    • Because droves of Christians “abuse” gay people constantly, right Brian? And where are these droves & what exactly is the nature of the abuse?

Again: FREEDOM of RELIGION allows people to condemn specific acts associated with homosexuality according to the tenets of their faith which are based upon the Bible.

And in doing such, such does NOT constitute “abuse”.

    • That translates (usually) into “I’d give the name, but they don’t want to be targeted like they were at the State House.” The partiality is not in the statement given, nor in respecting their right to not getting attacked for what they saw. People sang a message of peace and love and were accosted for it. Period. Regardless of the political or religious affiliation, we need MORE of those in our world, not less…plus, apparently, a missing hefty dose of civility and respect for others.

And that’s for both sides of the aisle.

  3. While I dont agree with The Christian group philosophy , I also dont agree with the protestors way of disrupting . Rude, Childish antics

  4. Gosh, it takes real courage for a 275-pound intact (presumably) male to taunt & harass a middle-aged woman……. particularly while she’s playing guitar to boot!

While I respect this worship leader’s sentiment of God’s love for all, calling out grievous sin is also the responsibility of those who follow Jesus the Christ and it is demanded of us all throughout the Bible, as in Ephesians: “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them” or in Timothy: “As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear”.

While we are called to treat others with kindness & to never judge the state of another’s soul, we also must stand firm in condemning evil & in never surrendering to depravity. The reality is, without exception, that a man can never become a woman or vice-versa. While one can feel personally sorry for the profound mental illnesses that these people very obviously suffer from – verbal apologies rendered to them in the face of the unconstitutional & uncivil behaviors they displayed only cater to these aggressors increasing sense of entitlement & impunity. And having been supposedly “abused” by some party or by “society” simply does not give a grown man or woman the right to abuse someone else, I’m sorry. Also, let’s not equate “abuse” with society-at-large’s unwillingness to consent to the disordered condition of “transsexualism”.

As far as the Montpelier police allowing unconstitutionality to reign on the statehouse property which merely incited escalation & created a potentially dangerous scenario for all – there are no words to describe the degree of deep disappointment in their unrighteous inaction.

  5. This video of the small group on the state house lawn shows such the dichotomy in our society Good vs evil . It doesn’t take a genius to figure out which group portrays love and which is filled with venous hatred and limited tools to communicate in our community .I for one would definitely trust my children in the peaceful loving groups presence ,not in bull-horned, disrespectful ,unlawful ,hateful people .

  6. “What defines an assault? 1. : the crime or tort of threatening or attempting to inflict immediate offensive physical contact or bodily harm that one has the present ability to inflict and that puts the victim in fear of such harm or contact compare battery. 2. : the crime of assault accompanied by battery.”

I watched the video and it appeared to me crimes were committed by the “Young Turk” agitators as defined above. As much as I would like to take part in excersing my right to free speech and freedom to assemble (as defined by our “inalienable” Bill of Rights), any person coming at me with the intent to inflict pain or harm (hands on or off) would be met with a forceful kick to the groin sending the perp sailing into the abyss from which they came (i.e. self-defense #Metoo, #MyBodyMyChoiceandGod-given-Right-to-Protect-It.)

I know such an act would be deemed un-Christian like on my part. The Irish-Scot warrior blood heats up when faced with demonic behavior. Even David faced such a threat with a stone and sling shot – it was God’s will that slayed Goliath. I will pray for all involved and pray for peace. If those who wish to cause harm to peaceful assemblers, they will face judgement and consequences for their actions. Tolerating demonic behavior should no longer be tolerated as it only creates more of it. The Devil knows who and how to manipulate and overtake. All Christians need to start contemplating how to stand and fight these forces of evil who are operating in the flesh and seeking more to take and take out. The veil is thinning.

    • Christians have already started the fight by denying gay children and children with gay parents access to their schools, and then demanding to use your tax dollars to continue their discriminatory actions. Then, they cry that it’s religious persecution when they’re denied those tax dollars.

Speaking of fighting, it could be argued that this gathering was intentionally incendiary. For the record, I condemn the ‘assault by whistle’. That was definitely a crime.

    • Such an act as you describe would never be deemed un-Christian by a rational individual. It would instead be deemed an act of self-defense up until just a few years ago – when the two-tiered system of justice was imposed by the radicals & extremist dictators who now occupy this FORMER Constitutional Republic.

    • Case in point – melding gay vs. Christians is a tick-like default mechanism used to divide and spread misinformation. Do you have any comment regarding gay vs. Muslims? See Dearborn, Michigan for more details. For the record, an individual’s bedroom follies is none of my business – but having it shoved in my face and into children’s faces crosses the line of decorum and civil liberty. A clear violation of my right and my choice not to be subjected to perverts on parade displaying their junk for the world to see. Another matter is there are people in the gay community that opine the alphabet acroynym cult has done more harm to them than any good. It is embarrassing and humiliating to those decent people who wish to live their lives in peace as well.

  7. And where were gay children denied the right to attend school by Christians? I requested specific examples: Names/locations. All I’m aware of here are the Vermont Principals Association DENYING the entire student body of the Mid Vermont Christian School the right to participate in any/all athletic events because their GIRL’S basketball team forfeited a game where they would be forced to compete against a 6-foot-tall MALE with MALE genitalia who proclaims he is a girl.

    “Rose” is a: Male.

Apparently, discrimination on the basis of religion and against FEMALES is an actual thing. Go figure.

    • Here’s one example:

“Grace Christian’s handbook claimed the right to deny admission to a student “if the atmosphere or conduct within the home or the activities of the student are counter to or in opposition to the biblical lifestyle the school teaches,” according to a copy of the book received through a public records request to the Department for Children and Families.

“This includes, but is not limited to, participating in, supporting or condoning sexual immorality, homosexual activity, or bisexual activity; promoting such practices; or being unable to support the moral principles of the school,” the school’s handbook said.

The school also asked the parents of prospective students to sign a “Statement of Faith,” which included a provision stating that homosexuality and bisexuality were “sinful and offensive to God.””

  8. “For the Christians are distinguished from other men neither by country, nor language, nor the customs which they observe. For they neither inhabit cities of their own, nor employ a peculiar form of speech, nor lead a life which is marked out by any singularity. The course of conduct which they follow has not been devised by any speculation or deliberation of inquisitive men; nor do they, like some, proclaim themselves the advocates of any merely human doctrines. But, inhabiting Greek as well as barbarian cities, according as the lot of each of them has determined, and following the customs of the natives in respect to clothing, food, and the rest of their ordinary conduct, they display to us their wonderful and confessedly striking method of life. They dwell in their own countries, but simply as sojourners. As citizens, they share in all things with others, and yet endure all things as if foreigners. Every foreign land is to them as their native country, and every land of their birth as a land of strangers. They marry, as do all [others]; they beget children; but they do not destroy their offspring. They have a common table, but not a common bed. They are in the flesh, but they do not live after the flesh. They pass their days on earth, but they are citizens of heaven. They obey the prescribed laws, and at the same time surpass the laws by their lives. They love all men, and are persecuted by all. They are unknown and condemned; they are put to death, and restored to life. They are poor, yet make many rich; they are in lack of all things, and yet abound in all; they are dishonoured, and yet in their very dishonour are glorified. They are evil spoken of, and yet are justified; they are reviled, and bless; they are insulted, and repay the insult with honour; they do good, yet are punished as evil-doers. When punished, they rejoice as if quickened into life; they are assailed by the Jews as foreigners, and are persecuted by the Greeks; yet those who hate them are unable to assign any reason for their hatred.”
    -Epistle to Diognetus, Ch. 5

  9. I wonder how the protesters knew that they would be there?
Dis the protesters have a permit also?

  10. Freedom of speech? Not from the left/progressives,suppression of speech, the progressives new mantra.

Progressives…the party of the shrill old hags

You know they are in town by all the brooms leaning on the walls of the statehouse.

They don’t use them to clean up,but to fly, to disrupt, your freedom of speech.

VOTE EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM OUT!
