Vernon man dies in crash/ Mailbox thefts/ VT man killed in CA

A 77-year-old Vernon man has died following a Dec. 4 crash in Dummerston, state police say.

At 3 pm on Dec. 4, state troopers  responded to a single vehicle crash on Interstate 91. They found a 2008 Toyota Corolla at an uncontrolled rest on the embankment of I-91. Driver and sole occupant Donald Pratt was treated at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital and then Dartmouth, where he was pronounced deceased weeks later.

Police say Pratt was traveling north on I-91 when his vehicle left the roadway. His vehicle traveled down an embankment and crashed into a tree. This resulted in heavy front-end damage.

This crash is still under investigation and members of the public with information helpful to Trooper Eric Acevedo are asked to call 802-722-4600.

Multiple mailbox theft, vandalism – State Police are investigating multiple mailbox vandalisms and theft of mail which occurred in the early morning of January 2, 2024, on Dunton Road (Sheldon) Rice Hill Road (Sheldon) Jones Road (Highgate), and March Farm Road (Franklin). Troopers are looking for public assistance with identifying vehicle(s) and those involved. Anyone with information is asked to contact the St. Albans Barracks at 802-524-5993. 

Vermont native killed in California – A Vermont native with ties to Groton was killed last month in a domestic dispute in California, the Journal-Opinion reports.

Ezra Pouech, 30, died protecting his girlfriend and her children from her ex-husband, according to an obituary. She was also injured in the stabbing. The ex-husband died by suicide, according to media reports.

Pouech, who was born in Hinesburg, had extended family in Groton.
