Vermont Fish & Wildlife Press Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. — Hunters are gearing up for the start of Vermont’s traditionally popular 16-day regular deer season that begins Saturday, November 16 and ends Sunday, December 1.
A hunter may take one legal buck during this season if they did not already take one during the archery deer season. The definition of a legal buck depends on the Wildlife Management Unit (WMU). A map of the WMUs is on pages 24 and 25 of the 2024 VERMONT HUNTING & TRAPPING GUIDE available from license agents statewide.
“The greatest numbers of deer continue to be in western regions of the state and other valley areas,” said Vermont Fish and Wildlife’s deer biologist Nick Fortin. “The Green Mountains and Northeast Kingdom offer more of a big woods experience with fewer, but often larger, deer.”
Vermont hunting licenses include a buck tag for this season and a late season bear tag (for Nov. 16-24), cost $28 for residents and $102 for nonresidents. Hunters under 18 years of age get a break at $8 for residents and $25 for nonresidents. Licenses are available on Fish and Wildlife’s website and from license agents statewide.
“I am urging all hunters to wear a fluorescent orange hat and vest to help maintain Vermont’s very good hunting season safety record,” said Vermont Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Christopher Herrick.

A 2024 Deer Season Hunting Guide can be downloaded from the department’s website at www.vtfishandwildlife.com. The guide includes a map of the Wildlife Management Units (WMUs), season dates, regulations, and other helpful information.
Hunters are required to report deer in person at a big game reporting station during the regular season. Online reporting will not be available. This requirement allows biologists to collect important information from as many deer as possible.
Hunters who get a deer on November 16 or 17 can help Vermont’s deer management program by reporting their deer at one of the biological check stations listed below:
- Emmon’s Supermarket – Grand Isle
- Guilford Country Store – Guilford
- Back Country Sports – St. Albans
- West Enosburg Country Store – Enosburg Falls
- Windsor Fire Department – Windsor
- Keith’s Country Store – Pittsford
- Rack N Reel – New Haven
- Lead & Tackle – Lyndonville
- R&L Archery – Barre
- Singleton’s Store – Proctorsville
- Wright’s Sport Shop – Derby
- Village Grocery & Deli – Waitsfield
- Bennington Fish Hatchery – Bennington
Hunters who do not go to a biological reporting station are asked to provide a tooth from their deer. Tooth envelopes and tooth removal instructions are available at all big game reporting stations. Each tooth will be cross sectioned to accurately determine the deer’s age, and the results will be posted on the Fish and Wildlife website next spring.
Hunters who get a deer on opening weekend of the Nov. 16-17 deer season can help Vermont’s deer management program by reporting their deer at a biological check station.

Yes, by all means but you better hope there is not a colorblind Commiecrat with a gun out there.
I’m color blind and I’ve deer hunt.. I make sure to identify what I see before raising a rifle. The problem when I was hunting was the Flatlanders, mainly from MA. The come to VT and act crazy. They are known to kill deer and leave them if no horn in those days of Buck only. If they get a buck, then take it. Those MA people were shoot happy and was a danger to hunters.
Now as I’ve mentioned the color blind aspect, just a little repeat. I’m red-Green and can see deer better than normal people, we go by shading differences. In WW@ color blind people were used to spot camouflage that covered vehicles, tanks, artillery etc. the placement didn’t look right.
So don’t blame color blind people of which there are millions. Any color that has a red or green in combination to another color looks like the base color. Purple looks like blue for instance. The blazing yellow or International Orange really stands out. The Air Force refueling tankers (KC-135) had an International Orange stripe on the nose. I worked and flew on them.
Ya watch out for the Commiecrats. They are known to cause “ACCIDENTS”.
Hi James, didn’t you choose to move here from Connecticut after you retired?
Making you one of those infiltrating flatlanders real Vermonters complain about.
Most commenters on this site feel Vermont should be controlled by the natives.
Hunt at night and the color of your clothes will not matter. Try not to get caught as the game wardens do not care what color clothes you wear.
Back in the good old days of deer hunting VT deer had to have horns (any size) and NH you could take two with does inclusive. This must have been about the mid 50’s. The F&G head boss was friendly with the same title of a guy in NH. It wasn’t deer season, the VT boss went to NH and they both hunted deer at night and got a couple. They got caught and it made news. I couldn’t find an article about ti being too old, but I remember it. Searching Yahoo, there are many Deer Jacking articles and the punishments.
