MONTPELIER, Vt. – The Vermont hunting season for gray squirrels begins September 1and continues through December 31, according to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department.
“Vermont has a healthy population of gray squirrels, concentrated in southern Vermont and the Champlain Valley,” said Hunter Education Coordinator Nicole Meier. “They’re a fantastic small game species for new hunters to learn the basics of reading the landscape, making a safe and ethical shot and cooking wild game.”
In Vermont, gray squirrels are often hunted with a .22 rifle, a shotgun or archery equipment. The department recommends that squirrel hunters wear a blaze orange vest or hat anytime they are afield.
The best habitat for squirrel hunting is stands of nut-bearing trees like oak, hickory and beech. The daily bag limit is four gray squirrels, and the possession limit is eight.
“Gray squirrels are incredibly tasty — many would say better than rabbit,” said Meier. “You can find great gray squirrel recipes in classic cookbooks, trendy culinary magazines, and of course anywhere that publishes wild food recipes.

Are Black Squirrels in Vermont in hunting season also? Seen a few of them. Must have migrated for the southern states. Opossums are here also.
Yankee magazine published an article about what to do with grey squirrels invading your bird feeders. Humoristaclly I posted an Squirrel Pot Pie recipe in the comment section. They removed it. No humor. Yankee was once a good publication with Yankee subjects and values. Now it’s a tourist magazine promoting the New England states and tourist place repeatedly. Their recipes are also repeats. Yankee must be infiltrated by the now liberal management from the southern NE states, again no humor. Now their web site is 3/4 full of ads and the viewing area is a squint eye operation. I wrote them about it, no response. So I have the power, took some effort to unsubscribe (confusing procedure) , but got it done. Yankee is in my rear view mirror. Value less and clue less.
Anybody, I love grey squirrel in a stew, but I’ve always found skinning them harder than I thought it should be (like bullpout !) Is there an easy way ?
Rodent sam-ich. I’ll pass.
