Vermont’s General Election push toward the “middle of nowhere”

By KT Cappellini

While counting ballots late into the evening on election day, I turned on a TV in our town hall to check on the presidential election results. It was becoming clear that former President Trump was leading in most of the battleground states.

“Please turn that off,” said a fellow vote-counter. “It’s disturbing.”

Such has been the general attitude displayed by many Vermonters towards Mr. Trump since he first ran for President in 2016, and most especially since he lost reelection to Joe Biden in 2020, including the state’s (supposedly) Republican Governor, Phil Scott.

In his victory-lap email to supporters, Scott wrote, “we simply can’t go on like this for much longer. I’ve always believed most Vermonters, and most Americans, are somewhere in the political middle.”

If the middle looks like the most epic political comeback in American history, a decisive capture of the Electoral College AND the popular vote, and a sweep of both the Senate and the House, then Vermonters, and Governor Scott along with them sure have a heck of a long way to go to get there.

As Trump supporter Elon Musk wrote on X, “The people of America gave Donald Trump a crystal clear mandate for change tonight.”

Although perhaps (still) not completely obvious to Governor Scott, a clear majority of the American people from all races and creeds and in all but a handful of mostly elitist coastal states apparently care more about dollars and cents, secure borders, costly foreign wars, and an end to woke madness than they do about abortion rights, transgenderism, racial equity, and climate change.

Moreover, all of the incessant ranting about extremism, insurrection, and the next incarnation of Adolf Hitler, which during the presidential primaries had Governor Scott cheerleading for the war-mongering neocon Nikki Haley, proved no match for the sheer common sense of the American people.

To new members-elect of the Vermont Legislature, Scott also writes, “while you were elected with an “R” or a “D” next to your name, when we arrive in Montpelier in January, we need to put that aside because at the end of the day, we’re all on Team Vermont.”

That’s funny, considering “Team Vermont” has been wearing only one jersey since the dawn of the Democratic Supermajority, and Governor Scott chose to wear it, rather than stick up for the principles of his own party. According to a recent article in the Boston Globe, Scott, while considered the “most popular” governor in America, derives most of his support from Democratic and Independent voters.

On past legislative votes, he was willing to sell out major constituencies, like the gun-rights lobby during the 2018 battle over S.55, in order to garner favor with the Supermajority. Now, when he’s faced with the prospect of many native Vermonters voting with their feet and fleeing the state in droves, because they can no longer afford to live here, he doubles down on “bipartisanship.”

As promised, if he plans to tackle the mounting and massive problems facing everyday Vermonters, like affordability, runaway taxes, education funding, and a housing crises, then Governor Scott needs to dispense with the “man in the middle” banter and actually lead with some conviction.

It may not make you “popular” in certain circles of Vermont to say that the electrification of the state as a future EV paradise is an unrealistic and unaffordable pipe dream, but it will make sense to the average Vermonter who knows in his or her gut that $8-dollar-a-gallon heating oil in one of the coldest states in the Union defies rationality.

Taking a page from Trump’s playbook – and now that Vermont Republicans have just won enough House and Senate seats to finally break the Supermajority and defend a gubernatorial veto – will Governor Scott embrace some “unpopularity,” stand up to Democratic-party lunacy, and say, “enough is enough?”

Otherwise, looking at the solid-red electoral map of Trump’s victory, Vermont risks becoming left behind on the blue fringes with other Democratic-majority states, itself fast-becoming a tourist-driven banana-republic replete with excessive taxation, runaway crime, rampant drug use, and a declining, disparate population of the super-wealthy and working poor.

To borrow from another one of Elon Musk’s posts on X, “let that sink in.”

The author is a Selectman in the town of Plymouth, and ran for State Representative in 2016 and 2022.

  1. “a tourist-driven banana-republic replete with excessive taxation, runaway crime, rampant drug use, and a declining, disparate population of the super-wealthy and working poor”

    SADLY, WE’RE ALREADY THERE.

  2. Re Scott ever changing into something resembling something with a spine: What is the definition of insanity again??? …repeating the same actions over and over again (or expectations of changed outcome) and expecting a different outcome???
Change is a verb – it requires action, not a change of clothes, hats, or insignia… and Scott is the proverbial milqtoast, pablum (wannabe presidential candidate) spineless PERSON (who does not know what a man is by his own admission)… so how in the world can we expect him to stand up to ANY sort of political heat for us?
    He won’t.
    Don’t expect him to.
His interests are far from Vermont…if they are even in this country at all… Scott has delusions of grandeur with no idea beyond following orders from above (whomever is his Daddy) what he SHOULD do.
Sad, but this was always him… why do you expect him to suddenly change?
He’s a rebublican and he voted for Harris??? The man has NO integrity at all… not waiting for that to suddeny change.
He needs to go…but who has the intelligence, experience and man-ya’ya’s to stand up to the powers that are toppling Vermont from the inside out?
We get what we accept… that didn’t change with this election. At least in Vermont…

    • Excellent article.

How can anyone trust Phil Scott after he denounces the best president in recent history and went further to start a petition with Patty McCoy to remove Donald Trump from office early.

Yes we got some people elected to office to oust the super majority…

I still don’t think we can claim this as a republican victory…

How many republican representatives that were in office previously signed on with Scott and Patty McCoy to remove Donald Trump from office early… I believe it was all but 17 of those that were in office under the Dome of Gloom in Montpelier at that time.

How many of those same people did we just re-elect and how many new people were elected that would denounce Trump

I wonder how many of these so-called republicans that were just elected voted for Donald Trump.

I can’t believe we have So-called republicans in the state of Vermont supporting Harris who wants open borders and who has lost over 350000 children that crossed our border and it is believed have been sold into the child sex trade and for body parts…

How can our Republican party in the state of Vermont support a woman that has marxist values and is ready to sell us out to the destruction of our United States of America.

Donald Trump has proven he is a leader that loves America that will do things to make life better for every American… We had 4 years of that in his previous administration. Everything We purchased cost less under Donald Trump because he has an understanding of how to run a business and get things done and it’s truly concerned for the average working American..

Maybe instead of denouncing Trump…. Phil Scott could ask for some lessons on how to run the state of Vermont and make us physically responsible and financially stable.

I understand almost everyone has a complaint about Donald Trump… Whatever those complaints were they were not viable enough to stop him from creating the best economy in America when he was president.

Isn’t that what it’s all about… Electing a President that will do the best things for the voting public make America strongerand safer

We have been lied to about so many things not only in our state government but in our federal government that it’s hard to know what the truth is anymore.

However there’s no doubt that Phil Scott does not have The best interests of Vermonter’s or our country at heart when he makes the statement that he has to put country over party and then goes on to vote for Harris…

After spending my lifetime in the state of Vermont I really have deep concerns as to whether we will ever restore our beautiful little state to what it once was.

I pray to God everyday that at some point common sense and self responsibility will make a big comeback and our beautiful little state

  3. Simply put, Spot On.
Not the time for fence walking to continue when the USA has spoken loud and clear.
Let us navigate into smooth sailing bring us back to safe harbor.

  4. So the left is in total meltdown, and the finger pointing has all ready started, it’s Biden’s fault, it’s Waltz fault and no one on the left is blaming the ” real culprit ” and that would be the ” Anointed One ” Harris, so the progressive democrats thought that this inept clown had any substance, hell she couldn’t even get a 1% vote when trying to run for President in her own party and for the last 3-4 year what had she accomplished , anything……………… I’ll wait, yeah that’s what I thought !!

Biden was forced to pick ” Black Female ” yup a DEI Hire, and he got her, maybe it was his senility even back then ?? …… Oh well.

So these whining losers showed the nation what and who they were promoting as there candidate, and people paid attention, and were not impressed with this cackling fool, so they gave the country to Orange Man Bad ” full control “, time for change and we’ll have it, the nonsense will soon be gone, God Bless America and he did !!

Vermont had over 200k that voted for Harris, and that includes our so-called ” conservative ” Governor ” TDS ” Scott, how pathetic, this goes to show how and why the state is in such disarray.

  5. On the positive side the “holier and smarter than thou” bs rings hollow when they can’t use their go to excuses any more.

    No more:
    Russia, Russia or
    “lost the popular vote” or
    “Angry losers”

He is the President. He won. The Dems, Scott and his other RINO friends, the CIA, the judges, the special prosecutors, the media and the various US agencies for health, immigration etc, all did their best to discredit him or disqualify him. They failed.

    And it is beautiful.

  6. This is so spot on:

“That’s funny, considering “Team Vermont” has been wearing only one jersey since the dawn of the Democratic Supermajority, and Governor Scott chose to wear it, rather than stick up for the principles of his own party. According to a recent article in the Boston Globe, Scott, while considered the “most popular” governor in America, derives most of his support from Democratic and Independent voters.”

  7. So, it really is at time to encourage PRAYER if we really hope to see conservative values rise to the surface. Otherwise we are simply waiting to stand by the vetoes as the progressive agenda surfaces. Remove Zuckerman’s bookshelf outside his office door with all the banned books and his female products.

Were those cannabis treated tampons – those are real and were popular in Colorado settings when Huckabee was grooming Vermont to endorse commercialization that gave us the same acceleration in opioid overdoses.

  8. I wonder how the Climate Agenda scam will be stopped in Vermont when Governor Scott is one of 24 Governors who are listed as members on the Climate Alliance? Here’s the link, check it out: https://usclimatealliance.org/members/
What Vermont needs is a good cleaning. 🙏

Here’s a letter dated 11/7/24 from the Climate Alliance Co-Chairs, Gov. Hochul and Lujan Grisham:

    Press Release
    November 2024
U.S. Climate Alliance Co-Chairs, Govs. Hochul and Lujan Grisham, Issue Statements on Presidential Election
    November 7, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the co-chairs of the U.S. Climate Alliance – New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham – issued the following statements after the election of President-elect Donald J. Trump:

“The New York climate agenda doesn’t pause for elections,” said Alliance co-chair New York Governor Hochul. “Since taking office, I have implemented some of the nation’s strongest actions on climate, and make no mistake, we’ll continue leading the transition to a zero carbon future no matter who is in the White House. The U.S. Climate Alliance and its governors filled the void of leadership during President-elect Trump’s first term and Americans can be assured we’re prepared to fill it again. Together, we’ll tap every ounce of our experience and authority to protect America’s progress and press forward.”

“We’re not alone in this fight – we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with hundreds of cities, Tribes, businesses, and institutions that are fiercely committed to protecting our climate and delivering a better, healthier future for America,” said Alliance co-chair New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham. “Governors have a decades-long track record of advancing innovative, effective climate solutions and we won’t be deterred by the result of this or any other election. No matter the obstacles, our commitment will not waver, and our progress will not be stopped.”

Through increasingly bold and ambitious climate action over the past four years, America has made historic gains, created millions of good-paying jobs, and invested billions of dollars in communities across the country. The U.S. Climate Alliance’s commitment to protecting this progress remains resolute.

The Alliance is a bipartisan coalition of 24 governors – representing nearly 55% of the U.S. population and 60% of the U.S. economy – all committed to securing America’s net-zero future through state-led, high-impact climate action. Since its creation in 2017, the coalition has been a cross-cutting, consistent source of leadership to uphold U.S. climate action both domestically and abroad. Whatever headwinds lie ahead, Alliance governors are up to the task and well-positioned to continue leading the charge.

Next week, the Alliance will lead a delegation of top state leaders to the UN Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. Together, the delegation will strongly affirm America’s sustained commitment to working with the global community to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.

  9. If things do not change for the better very soon for the majority of citizens, there will be a collective nervous breakdown tenfold the size of what is witnessed on social media of late – it won’t be just one side melting down either.

The economy is in shambles, yet the stock market roars higher and the Fed just cut the rate again? The SEC is rolling back regulations? All of which means, the billionaires and bankers are cleaning up bigly, while people are losing jobs, losing homes, and credit defaults soaring. The inflation is going to bolt higher and working to barely scrape by will be the norm into 2025 – that is if you still have a job. The scenario could not look any darker, yet most people can’t see it or feel the full brunt of it yet.

As is said every selection cycle, “it’s the economy, stupid!” Trump, like Obama’s first term, is taking on a financial system and a national debt wrought with collossal fraud and inflated beyond anything we’ve ever seen, ever! Not only in the United States, but the contraction is global – hitting Western Nations much worse than others.

Trump better do the right thing this time around. He inflated the debt by $9 trillion under his first term. If Trump and Congress do not relieve the pressure on the American people, opts to save the Central Bank and ushers in the digitial, not in your hand-in their’s currency – then he is no better and no different than any other President. I didn’t hear him or others speak much about the economy – other than energy and tariffs. All of which makes me suspicious if he capitulated rather than the other way around? We shall see. Be prepared nonetheless.

  10. Scott should get a job as a wind vane. Although I guess you can’t put jelly on a pole. Never mind.

  11. Awash in the middle, and we know who loves the middle, team Uniparty, I believe is the shirt our Governor has been wearing.

This is great change for sure, but can we get anything done? We’ll see there will have to be a massive game change on the part of the VTGOP. Honestly, I was stunned at what they did, didn’t think it could happen.

Organizers lay in wait, studying rules for radicals, they play a long game and are producing little radicals in our school system rather than American educated children with an understanding of civics and what our country is about.

There is much work ahead, surely, subversion is difficult to undo.
