Vermont has some of the nation’s highest rates of female workers in high workplace positions according to a new study by Wix.com.
Vermont has the highest female-to-male ratio of women in management positions in the nation which is .94 women per male. The Wix.com study states, “Vermont leads as the best state for female entrepreneurs, boasting the highest female-to-male ratio in management roles.”
However, further analysis reveals that nearly half of those businesses begun by women aren’t surviving.
The next highest rate in the country is New Mexico with .92 women per male, and Maine is third at .9.
Other highlights for Vermont include there are .62 women in management positions for every male position. Only Rhode Island and New Mexico with .68 and .70 respectively have higher rates of female managers.
There is also a category for the total number of companies per 100K people since 2014, and Vermont has 2,330, which puts Vermont seventh among the study’s top 15 overall for women in business. The high is California with 3,152 and the low is Maryland with 1,630.
The report overall states, “Vermont takes the crown as the best state for female entrepreneurs, boasting an impressive final score of 8.91/10. Despite a relatively low business survival rate (50.75%), Vermont excels in workplace gender representation.”
It continues, “The state has over two female financial managers for every male and the highest rate of women in management (0.94 per male) among all states studied – suggesting that Vermont is a prime destination for women pursuing progression in business. As of January 2024, a recent survey revealed that there were 3,432 women-led businesses across the state.”
The second highest rate of failure?
Regarding the category of Business Survival Rate, among the top 15 states for women to hold high positions, Vermont has the lowest rate of survival for its businesses, with just 50.75 of its businesses surviving.
The International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development considers Vermont the second worst state in the nation to start a business.
They state, “Vermont is a beautiful place to visit to watch the leaves change color, but it’s not a great place to start a business and make money. In large part, this is due to its expensive environment that makes it a second-worst state for starting a business. It has a high cost of living, as well as high tax rates and business startup costs.”
The media show Vermont Conversation recently hosted a panel of some of Vermont’s business leaders, including Vermont State Treasurer Mike Pieciak, the executive director of the Vermont Futures Project Kevin Chu, and others. The Brattleboro Reformer noted that overall, the panel did not offer the best assessment for Vermont as a business-friendly state.
The report states, “All panelists agreed that the current housing crisis is perhaps the most pressing of all issues facing Vermonters at this time. With an aging population, an aging workforce, a high cost of living and tax burden, and not enough affordable housing, Vermont is in dire need of young professionals – people of working age that can contribute to the economy and to the tax base.”
Contrary to Vermont, California claims the highest business survival rate at 86.22%.
Other findings
The study also highlights the 15 worst states for women to get into business leadership positions. The lowest-ranking state on the list is Ohio, however, their overall business survival rate is still much higher than Vermont’s at 76.55%.
The study found that for the most part financial manager roles had higher levels of gender equality compared with other positions.

business failures have nothing to do with women//// mostly it is bad public policy and corrupt governments or no desire for a product/// you may want to look at the business failures in california and all the empty buildings///
True, myday44. More than half of ALL small businesses fail. A lot of factors go into eventually having a successful business or having one that can’t cut it. Nothin’ to do with “gender” – real or imagined gender, that is.
Try to keep from manipulating facts & realities the way Amerikan Pravda does, i.e.: VT Digger, Bennington Banner, VTPBS/PR, Brattleboro Reformer, NY Times, Daily Beast, Wash Post etc. etc. You get the picture.
65% of ALL new startups fail during the first ten years, no matter who owns them – male, female, or other. And government subsidized startups aren’t all they’re cracked up to be either, e.g., Solyndra – Abound Solar – iSun (SunCommon).
What any of this has to do with women, I do not know.
It is my personal opinion that bullying, violence by men affected women’s success rate. Not that they are incompetent.
How does male bullying enter into the picture regarding a business success or failure, guess I’m dumb. Too many other factors influence outcomes. Are a female and a male business located side by side and similar? How would a male business owner harasses? Time is better spent on your business success than causing trouble. In my 26 years in an engineering business, I’ve never experienced it, nor had a desire. I’ve done business in the whole US, England, Mexico, Canada never a problem. and have had competition.
Bullying and violence affect everyone. I haven’t seen any references here to women being deemed incompetent simply because they’re women.
Are women victims of discrimination? Of course, they are. As have been many subsets of the human species throughout history. African American slaves could vote before women had that right. Name a point in time and you will find discrimination against one person or group and another. That doesn’t make it right. And it certainly doesn’t make those of us who recognize discrimination to be guilty of anything simply because it occurs.
And the worse bullying and intimidation in the work place is perpetrated by white women against other white women. This abuse is experienced by many women including myself. Although, I have never been bullied by a man in the work place.
During the pandemic, self-employed / sole proprietor businesses only got VT state aid if they were women or minorities. So stuff like that probably helps a lot too.
Vermont’s pathetic business failure statistic is not helped by excessive regulation, high taxes, a new payroll assessment to provide “free babysitting” and a failure of Vermont’s criminal justice system to provide basic disincentives for out-of-control shoplifting and embezzlement. It’s not complicated. Socialism kills business in many ways, including a pervasive attitude that regards entrepreneurs as greedy parasites on society.
According to a NY university professor Jonathan Mack who moved to Newfane VT stating in an article he wrote, for THE COMMONS a Brattleboro free newspaper Aug 21, 2013 titled “(VT) A SEMI-RURAL ECONOMY HAS UNIQUE NEEEDS, WE DO NOT HAVE, NOR CAN WE HAVE, AN INDUSTRIAL ECONOMY” This article is available in a search.
This article reflects the success of starting and trying to exist a business in VT.

The Voodoo economic mentality of constantly introducing more taxation and regulations from the Montpelier clan isn’t healthy for anyone or business. Having power is to control. Tax people for Climate Change of pollutants generated by China, India and the CA (western) wild fires. This also includes the mentality of Flatlanders like the article’s J. Mack. Hat businesses Vt has mainly of are crafts, artisans with low employment and a limited clientele. Montpelier Liberals made sure of that.
Just watched a show 7/29 on Merit TV (commercial network), Dr Phil about state succession. There are 5 states that are undertaking it, HI, AK, TX, parts of CA, and NH. Parts of OR want to be included with Idaho. They are sick of Liberals. Interesting show. This represents 10% of the US. Need 2/3 of the states to approve succession. Wish a hook and chain could drag VT into the Atlantic.
MVRA Make Vermont Real Again (should have bumper stickers)
It is called “predatory lending” and one only has to look at who benefits/profits from business start-ups and subsequent failures. The liquidity crisis has led to loosey-goosey lending targeting the BIPOC/Equity/Uneducated to acquire large debts – aka a debt-anchor around the neck. Padding the tax rolls and padding loan portfolios just long enough to steal the labor and then steal the property and any earnings – current and future. The scam is a set up to manifest into evaporated credit lines and insolvency. Applies to all business and all persons with a pulse. See how it works?
Progressive-based predatory lending is what led to the housing market collapse and subsequent 2008 economic crisis. Successful home ownership requires responsibility, and merit-based lending practices using credit ratings is always what lending institutions have relied upon to determine risk and set loan policies and rates. What we have now in the rental housing market is landlords being prevented from investigating credit rating and criminal records of prospective tenants. Under leftist policies, there is no incentive to be a good citizen.
