Vermont is one of the 249 sanctuary jurisdictions targeted by America First Legal in a recent letter warning of consequences under the Trump administration.
AFL is a legal advocacy group promoting a closed border and deportation of illegal aliens – a kind of mirror image to the open-border ACLU. According to the June, 2024 Immigration and Customs Enforcement list of sanctuary jurisdictions, Vermont has been a sanctuary state since January, 2017 – the month President Donald Trump ‘45 took office. That’s when the Legislature passed S.79, which was among the first bills signed by Gov. Phil Scott.
Since then, Vermont’s Criminal Justice Council has consistently supported and reinforced a hands-off policing approach to arrests and detainment based on immigration status and has forbid police communication with ICE leading to detainment and deportation.
Trump’s appointee for border czar, Tom Homan, has repeatedly promised to take legal action against sanctuary jurisdiction officials who resist ICE efforts to detain and deport illegal immigrants.
The ICE Boston office (pgs. 15 and 16) lists as ‘limited cooperation institutions’ eight Vermont state prisons. ICE defines limited cooperation as giving notification of release in advance, but not holding potential deportees long enough for ICE to take custody.
Although Trump has yet to take office, America First Legal has sent a sternly-worded letter to sanctuary jurisdiction officials – including (it says) Gov. Phil Scott. The letter can be seen here and includes the following:
“Federal law imposes serious consequences for obstructing the execution of federal immigration law. So-called “sanctuary” jurisdictions that forbid compliance with federal immigration law and cooperation with the officials who enforce it are, therefore, breaking the law. Moreover, sanctuary jurisdictions are strictly prohibited from requiring their employees to violate federal immigration law.
“We have identified your jurisdiction as a sanctuary jurisdiction that is violating federal law. Such lawlessness subjects you and your subordinates to significant risk of criminal and civil liability. Accordingly, we are sending this letter to put you on notice of this risk and insist that you comply with our nation’s laws.’
VDC has asked Scott’s press secretary to respond to the letter and will publish any comment as soon as it is received.

Good.
Looking forward to see how this unfolds.
I had a bowl of popcorn, in pure bliss of imagined scenarios….
oh, WHAT FUN IT WOULD BE!
Amen!!
As the number of “sanctuary” municipalities/states dwindle due to common sense, and experience, where do you suppose those displaced criminals and illegals will go ? Sooner or later the last loony places that endorse this loonacy will be inundated by the people that are forced out of their present locations . Does Vermont want to be the home to all these people ? We can not afford it even if you are one of them that believes in this loonacy you have to understand this .
You are correct in assuming that many will naturally gravitate to “this brave little state”, where the reputation is that all their needs will be met. Their needs will however have to be borne by Vermont’s taxpayers since the Trump Administration will hopefully and wisely be cutting our federal funding.
It’s about time.
The tone is right for what Vermont needs, lest our revolving door policies allow revolving doors for illegal immigrants, too. Hopefully the muscle of the law will be up to the challenge.
Thankfully most of Vermonters don’t see the destructive sides of border issues that come up from the south. It’s easy to wonder how much of Burlington and Montpelier’s rapid decline is from immigrant gangs and the like. Other larger towns have been affected too. Vermont’s lovely rural setting and COLD climate makes most immigrants move on towards cities with more amenities for them to find and scavenge.
Vermonters have kind hearts. A LOT of Vermonters sympathetic to the flights of immigrants. Yes, most Americans likely have immigrant ancestors – but the vast majority were LEGAL immigrants. Countries have borders for reasons. Countries have laws for reasons.
I hope deporting immigrants might have learned something positive about American democracy and law and order, that they can be used in their home countries/next settlements. Their same invigorated efforts to get here can be used to stir these principles into their next settings to push and pray for law and order and governing freedoms.
Since the voters have been unable to clean up this morass in VT perhaps a stretch in a federal pen will provide an impetus to clean house. This time there will be no catch and release as those perps will be amongst them doing the walk of shame.
Good thing Gov Scott is a Republican and holds the values where he cares for national sovereignty. He’ll surely do the right thing.
(Hint: 100% Sarcastic)
FYI: this was supposed to be its own post not a reply, damn tiny phones
Move the wasteful government jobs out of what used to house the insane, homeless people so they can get the care they need for God sakes! Everyone just working from home anyway!!! Who’s GREAT idea was it to close such a facility???
It’s about time we clean up the illegal trash, sponging off Vermont’s taxpayer and federal funds, these criminals need to go back to wherever they came from !!
We have laws for a reason, and if you break them, deportation is the penalty, Oh well.
Waiting to hear the governor’s response now that Joe potato will not be there for help? Kamala won’t be there either and this is the result of poor judgement of who was the better candidate to lead the USA. It is truly unfortunate that we have a governor who took an oath to protect the constitution and disavowed his oath. It’s past time to start informing these politicians that an oath is an oath. This election wasn’t felt hard enough in liberal Vermont so maybe the federal notice will make them understand that Immigrants are welcome but they must be legal to be here. It’s not rocket science, it’s common sense that progressives just don’t understand or care about. Taxpayers are not responsible for the world’s poor people. We have a big enough burden for regular people just trying to make it ourselves here in Vermont.
BLACKMAIL, BRIBERY, EMBEZZLEMENT,EXTORTION, AND RACKETEERING ARE A DIRTY BUSINESS.
Tom, free place to stay in Moretown, any time. We’d love to have him visit Vermont for extensive periods of time….what fun.
Might curb some of drug traffic too.
Welcome Home Tom!
I’ll be curious to see if Phil Scott gives in on this matter when federal funds are withheld over this…..as they should be.
threatening state troopers with sanctions if they reported federal felonies (being an illegal alien) to the border patrol is a crime (see 13 VSA 8–compounding a felony)
the governor and may others should be charged
“No one is above the law!” No one is supposed to notice those who are above the law because they say so and they made laws that are against the law. They also made big bank off the backs of illegals and legals alike. Carry on!
Except Trump, his crimes have become legal.
Don’t forget Hunter Biden!
Or the pedophiles and drug dealers that his father pardoned.
Ivan, you mean the FBI confirmed Hunter’s laptop was legit, yet what is on it doesn’t matter? Funny how he bolted from a Congressional hearing and no one did one thing about it – Gun charges, tax charges….simply walked away. Gee, I wonder why? Ukraine? China? Russia?
If a criminal breaks into a country that isn’t his, is it unreasonable to be concerned that he/she might also break into cars, homes and businesses that aren’t theirs?
People talk about how much the wall might cost but the most expensive wall is the one that never gets built. ILLEGAL alien parasites cost taxpayers $280 BILLION PER YEAR
The wall is a one-time $10 billion expenditure. It could be less if Joe Zero Biden stops auctioning off the already paid for materials to the cheapest bidders, thus showing his hand in corruption and disunity by forcing the January government to buy it back from these crooks at a steep loss to our country.
First thing the Trump administration needs to do when a state refuses to get rid of their sanctuary state/city status is to send Federal Marshalls with arrest warrants in and arrest and perp walk that governor out of their offices for violating federal law.
Watch how they all change their tunes when Trum holds back federal dollars for sanctuary states and cities.
As far as King Philip the Scott 1st Eunuch King of Castrati is concerned, he will fold up like the cheap suit that he is when push comes to shove.
My vote for perp walked governor is Maura Healey of Massachusetts.
But I thought the general idea was that local laws hold more weight than Federal laws in all matters except for what is contained in the Constitution?
Furthermore, the federal laws/actions are what allowed people in to begin with so there might be quite the court case over this.
Would like to see doing the Montpelier perp walk are Atty Gen Charity Clark, the House Speaker, and Chittenden County’s marxist prosecutor…
Hey, Brian… Federal law provides a process for entering this country legally. Anyone who enters this country by any other means is therefore here illegally and subject to arrest and immediate deportation.
Furthermore, Federal law also states that harboring an illegal immigrant is a FELONY. Therefore, there are valid grounds to arrest any governors, mayors, or law enforcement officials who refuse to cooperate with ICE.
Sorry if I wrecked your day.
