The Vermont National Guard on Saturday, December 7 will present the Purple Heart medal to three soldiers injured in a drone attack on Christmas Day a year ago.

The 11 AM at the Army Aviation Support Facility in South Burlington will recognize Maj. John Lescure of Colchester, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Nicholas Fazio of Essex, and Sgt. Alex Jarvis of Burlington for injuries sustained in the line of duty.

On Christmas Day, 2023, three Vermont National Guard Soldiers with Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 126th Aviation Regiment (Air Ambulance), on deployment to U.S. Central Command were injured in an attack from a one-way unmanned aerial system. Despite their injuries, they were able to provide immediate live-saving care and medical evacuation for a critically injured soldier.

The Purple Heart is the oldest military award still given to U.S. service members. The medal is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of the U.S. Armed Services that has been wounded, killed, or has died after being wounded by enemy action.

  1. I couldn’t tell from the article where this occurred. I was curious to find out, so I looked up US Central Command, and Google says it’s located in Tampa, FL.

Does this mean that these soldiers were attacked on US soil? Does anyone know who attacked them? Why? Domestic or foreign enemies? Were there any more of these kind of “unmanned aerial system”attacks? Was anyone called to account? Was there any retaliation or more information regarding the circumstances surrounding this attack? Are our soldiers susceptible to more of them?

    • I was, likewise, confused because the attack setting seemed to be omitted.
