The lead story in the Journal-Opinion this week is about Thetford Academy’s move to be a cell-phone free school for 2024-2025.
The subject is having a bit of a moment as activists lobby districts around Vermont and beyond.
Here are a few stories the JO, the weekly newspaper for Bradford and surrounding towns on both sides of the Connecticut River, has encountered:
Killington’s Mountain Times reports that the Mountain Views Supervisory Union, which includes Woodstock Middle and High School, is considering the move.
The following two articles were referred to in our article:
- Stevens High School in Claremont adopted the policy last year, reports the Eagle Times.
- Champlain Valley Supervisory Union has convened a committee to study the policy’s merits, according to the Williston Observer.
In California, schools that banned phones a few years ago have advice for other districts as the governor calls for a crackdown, according to Cal Matters.
A small number of New York schools have banned phones, reports New York Magazine. Gov. Hochul wants to change that.
The Center Square: In Virginia, the Department of Education is drafting rules in response to an executive order issued by Gov. Youngkin.

One role of education is to prepare young adults for workplace employment. Few faster ways to get fired in my company than cellphone distraction.
This is long overdue.
They should remain in a backpack or locker much like the baseball caps that schools ban. They are a proven valuable tool in an emergency situation and shouldn’t be not allowed in absolute possession. Keep in mind they are not weapons.
try taking a bottle out of a babies mouth and see what happens/// i am waiting for the out come of this project/// do you really want to follow the great leader in california/// what will be the punishment for not complying/// i think the children are a lot smarter than the school/// hopefully the next group of children are smarter than our current leaders///
Finallly, something Vermont can be proud of. Workplaces next!
Always keep your device in airplane mode when it’s on your person. The phone should always be at about arms length away from your body when in use. These are microwave devices. Read the manufacturers tiny print insert on proper use. Probably an excellent birth control device, but the darn brain is getting JUICED!
great idea to get rid of these “brain suckers”.
Rice Memorial High School has banned cell phones for years, except at lunch. The effect on the school and kids has been incredibly positive.
