Vermont a sanctuary state, DOJ confirms

The State of Vermont is among a group named August 5 by the U.S. Department of Justice as Sanctuary Jurisdictions—states, counties, and cities whose laws or policies significantly hinder federal immigration enforcement.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi

DOJ said these designations followed a detailed review of each jurisdiction’s laws and directives. The list will be updated regularly, allowing for jurisdictions to be added or removed based on changes in their practices.

All listed jurisdictions will have a chance to respond to their designation, DOJ said. Gov. Phil Scott and other VT officials have consistently denied that Vermont is a sanctuary state.

In late May, Homeland Security published a national list that cited Vermont as well as Burlington, Montpelier, and Winooski as sanctuary jurisdictions. That national list was rescinded when several inaccuracies were discovered. But DOJ promised a revision – which it provided in the verbatim press release issued Tuesday, August 5:

Today, the U.S. Department of Justice published a list of states, cities, and counties identified as having policies, laws, or regulations that impede enforcement of federal immigration laws.

“Sanctuary policies impede law enforcement and put American citizens at risk by design,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “The Department of Justice will continue bringing litigation against sanctuary jurisdictions and work closely with the Department of Homeland Security to eradicate these harmful policies around the country.”

On April 28, 2025, President Trump signed Executive Order 14287: Protecting American Communities from Criminal Aliens. The Executive Order recognized that “some State and local officials . . . continue to use their authority to violate, obstruct, and defy the enforcement of Federal immigration laws” and “[i]t is imperative that the Federal Government restore the enforcement of United States law.” The Executive Order directed the Justice Department, in collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security, to publish a list of such jurisdictions. Accordingly, the following states, cities, and counties have been identified as sanctuary jurisdictions:

STATES:

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • District of Columbia
  • Illinois
  • Minnesota
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Washington

COUNTIES:

  • Baltimore County, MD
  • Cook County, IL
  • San Diego County, CA
  • San Francisco County, CA

CITIES:

  • Albuquerque, NM
  • Berkeley, CA
  • Boston, MA
  • Chicago, IL
  • Denver, CO
  • East Lansing, MI
  • Hoboken, NJ
  • Jersey City, NJ
  • Los Angeles, CA
  • New Orleans, LA
  • New York City, NY
  • Newark, NJ
  • Paterson, NJ
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Portland, OR
  • Rochester, NY
  • Seattle, WA
  • San Francisco City, CA

In recent months, the Justice Department has filed several lawsuits against sanctuary jurisdictions seeking to compel compliance with federal law, including one against New York City on July 24th. Recently, the Mayor of Louisville agreed to revoke their sanctuary policies following a letter from the Justice Department threatening legal action.

Read more about the sanctuary jurisdiction list and the criteria for inclusion here. This list is not exhaustive and will be updated as federal authorities gather further information. The federal government will assist any jurisdiction that desires to be taken off this list to identify and eliminate their sanctuary policies, so they no longer stand in opposition to federal immigration enforcement.

  1. This is big. Obviously, we are a sanctuary state as a sanctuary state is as a sanctuary state does. The state had the National Guard go to Afghanistan to pick up refugees, not US citizens or allies. The state continually reached out to the Biden Administration to request more migrants as the state is too white, and more recently communicated interest in importing Haitian migrants destined for Canada. This is being done while the state refuses to allow ICE to apprehend foreign national violent criminals and drug dealers. These resident, non-citizens are given free legal aid at the expense of taxpayers as well as other benefit programs. And let’s not forget our progressive politicians leaving the country to check on individuals detained by ICE at the expense of taxpayers.

  2. Good News! The consequences of Lawlessness have finally arrived!

Now having documented proof ………………… Will Vermont’s Leftist Elected Officials finally admit the truth about “Vermont’s Sanctuary Status?”

Will they stay in denial and continue to violate our U.S. Constitution and our Federal Immigration Laws, or will they rescind their Lawless Policies and their spending of taxpayer monies on their illegal harboring practices?

    • I can share a conversation I had with a state employee. The person informed me that equity is explained as a person in a wheelchair needing a wheelchair ramp. I stated that this explanation is not accurate and over simplified. I stated that after reading various United Nations documents, equity is aligned to the social and democratic -socialist conventions. Equity aligns to the United Nations broad definition of equality where the various inequities among socio economic groups are make equal. Therefore, equity is rebranded socialism. The person stated that I was absolutely correct, but if we told all those greedy capitalists what equity was they would want to keep their money.

  3. Elected people who don’t comply with federal laws or who encourage noncompliance with federal laws are in violation of their oath of office and are guilty of maladministration in addition to raising the risk level for everyone, both legal and otherwise. Grand jury members: take note. General public: file a complaint with the Grand Jury in your county.

  4. I hope they come after Vermont. Vermont Harbors fugitives and illegals and they give them licenses as well as food and education. It’s well known throughout the entire country that Vermont gives out money every loser that comes here. We have 9000 families we put into a hotel room because of our worthless Democrats that run the state. Taxpayers can’t handle this burden. It’s time we get rid of the Democrats that are controlling our money in Vermont.

  5. As we slip down the slope to get rid of states’ laws, the federal government gets more powerful. We should all be happier with a more powerful federal government.

    • States that make their own laws to subvert laws that are enumerated powers given to the federal government by the Constitution are violating the Supremacy Clause. If that authority is not enumerated to the federal government by the Constitution, it becomes a 10th Amendment issue.

10th Amendment: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.

The Constitution gives the Congress the power to make Immigration Laws. States that don’t follow that law are violating the Constitution. I know you libtards like to shout about the Constitution when things don’t go your way, but you should try reading it sometime.

“The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legitimized version of the first”. – Thomas Jefferson

    • I can’t imagine living in a country in which each state is legally allowed to establish its own immigration laws. What a mess that would be. States were allowed to illegally harbor and pay for illegal migrants under the Biden Administration, which has been an economic and social disaster. There are no “United” States without federal immigration laws and state compliance to federal laws.

  6. Thanks to Phil Scott for keeping a little of his oath. That information should be public anyway. If these people want to live as parasites they should be drug tested, evaluated for ability to work by 3 rd party not the state and if they’re really going to make a life of leeching off hard working Vermonters; those hard working Vermonters should be able to see the names of such leeches. Don’t get me wrong; if someone REALLY needs help they should get it until they can get back to contributing to society. And that should be an allotted amount of time; say 6 months to maybe a year, but not for life.

  7. Today there was a protest by a vocal minority at the BTV airport demanding that the airport not be used to facilitate deportations. That was not an action by the state or city but it does help to bolster Pam Bondi’s case that by outside appearances, Vermont in general is anti-ICE.

    • Absolutely, and thanks to groups like Migrant Justice, whose power (and corruption) continues to grow as they are fed donations by well-meaning Vermonters, any finger that gets lifted against illegal immigrants turns into a media circus. Migrant Justice calls WCAX and channel 5 news the minute ICE tries to do their job and spins the situation as some sort of raid or racial profiling event. It is not a coincidence that the two illegal MJ members arrested in Richford by ICE were let out of jail considering that MJ is in fact endorsed by the VT Bar Association…..

  8. Eric Holder: Served from 2009 to 2015.
Loretta Lynch: Served from 2015 to 2017.
Jeff Sessions: Served from 2017 to 2018.
William Barr: Served from 2019 to 2020.
Merrick Garland: Served 2021 to 2025.

After those five AG’s, we are to believe Pam Blondie[sic] is coming in like a wrecking ball to drain the swamp, restore law and order per the US Constitution? After all the countless Congressional investigations and hearings, with more to come! After all the Supreme Court cases punted to the curb or left to die on dockets, at their discretion. After decades of decadance and decay, the DOJ – with it’s three letter agency affiliates and politically compromised judicial bench occupiers – are going to arrest, prosecute and sentence the untouchables?

What we are witnessing are public humilitation rituals and the perps skip off to parts unknown, become featured commentators and gatekeepers for mega-media, or installed controlled opposition for an NGO or elite law firm. It is the greatest show on earth.

  9. That was a shout out to Madeline Kunin for getting the ball rolling, in that she, as governor, was the one who promoted Vt as a sanctuary state, and it’s where it all started and grew to where it is today! You know, we got a bunch of “rubes” up here in the “whitest” state in the country, so you know, they need some diversity! We’ll decide what’s best for you! I’m not a racist by any means, but this was crammed down our throats like a lot of other crap! Thanks!

  10. Once again the State of Vermont shoots its citizens in the foot to spite President Trump. And by the way, I pick my own apples at a wonderful farm in Cabot.

  11. I have two big cases of injustice I’d be happy to share with the DOJ too.
