Catamounts. Cinderella. Cardiac Kids.

All are good nicknames for the UVM men’s soccer team, which will play for the national championship tonight against #13 Marshall.

UVM defeated #3 Denver on Friday on penalty kicks to advance to the College Cup Final.

After falling behind in the second half, the Catamounts equalized with less than seven minutes before the end of regulation. After overtime failed to separate the two schools, UVM nailed its first four PKs while Denver missed its last two.

It was the third seeded team the unseeded Catamounts have defeated in the NCAA tournament this year. They will have to beat a fourth to win it all.

Tonight’s game at 8 p.m. will be played in Cary, North Carolina and broadcast on ESPNU or ESPN+.

  1. Do they writhe in agony, as their professional counterparts do, when afflicted with a real or imagined or wished clip to the ankle? Drama queens have ruined soccer.

    • Tyler, having played on a top 10 ranked Division 1A soccer team many years ago, I can assure you, it’s a *big* deal for UVM to make it this far in the NCAA tournament. Drama aside, give credit where credit is due. After all, it’s not like basketball and football players don’t try to draw fouls too.

    • Yes, Jay ,
The NHL instituted a whole new class of “unsportsmanlike conduct” (diving) penalties as a result of this malign european influence. Maybe it was watchable many years ago, but now the bleach for my eyeballs is prohibitively expensive. Soccer stinks.

  2. While the Vermont group are in North Carolina, maybe they should take a trip to the destroyed areas and visit the people still living in tents.

    • If you’re so concerned, maybe you should head down and help instead of posting nonsense 30 times a day here.

  3. So much for writhing in agony. Say what you will about everything else. The UVM Cardiac Cats are National Champs! It was a great game, and an amazing accomplishment.
