The University of Vermont (UVM) men’s rugby club won their first-ever Division II National Championship on Sunday, destroying the University of Chicago 71-5 in the final at SaberCats Stadium in Houston, Texas.
The undefeated Catamounts finished a flawless playoff run, outscoring opponents by a very large margin, cementing their status as the best team in collegiate D2 rugby.
The Catamounts were ranked No. 1 throughout the season and were unbeaten in league play in 2025. After giving up the first try to the University of Chicago, UVM Flanker Roman Legere carried the ball through hard yards, while prop Henry Missing terrorized the edges, scoring two tries and setting the tone for Vermont’s onslaught.
Scrumhalf Matt Tevnan orchestrated the UVM attack masterfully, threading runners and slotting seven conversions for 14 points. His grubber kicks pierced Chicago’s defense, including a quirky bounce that winger Luca Race scooped up for one of his four tries.
Locks Jack Worobel and Harrison Lloyd dominated the breakdown, with Worobel notching two tries and teeing up more. In the backline, flyhalf Justin Kasper and center Tom Burnett combined for incisive runs and offloads, while fullback Colin Green dazzled on counters with two scores of his own.
A late first-half red card to Chicago all but sealed the deal, but UVM was already up 31-5 at the break.
The Catamounts poured on 40 unanswered points, showcasing the depth and cohesion that carried them through a playoff wins, 65-11 over Villianova, 43-16 against Cornell, and a 22-11 semifinal win over UNC-Wilmington.
U-32 High School grads Duncan Mathies and Hank Beling were part of the championship team and were posted on the U32 Raiders instagram page about their win.
