Trump’s total control creates uncertainty for Vermont

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Trump is in total control. When he took office in 2017, it was a shock, and he went to work with never-Trumpers in his camp who pushed back, as well as at least establishment bureaucrats in his staff. That won’t be the case this time around, he has a party molded in his image. Here are some ways that this presidency could impact Vermont immediately.

  • The Republican trifecta will get to work immediately to address the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act sunset – Republicans are likely cutting income taxes further raiding liberal priorities as payfors (ACA market subsidies, IRA climate monies, SALT, etc).
  • Border issues – the last time Trump was President, Vermont’s northern border suffered from staff and funding being sent to the southern border, which had detrimental impacts on commerce.
  • J1 Visas and Immigration – Vermont’s resorts and businesses are heavily reliant on foreign workers, and the last time there was a Trump Presidency, these programs were restrained.
  • Less federal aid – Vermont is very dependent on federal aid in many places, which might be curtailed or restrained in the coming four years. Unlike the last Trump Presidency, we do not have Patrick Leahy in Washington to advocate for our little state.
  • It is not partisan to say that the proposed Trump tariffs will negatively impact the U.S. economy and increase the prices of many goods.

  1. Question, where did 20 million votes go from the 2020 election? Just asking for a friend.

    • Yeah! Think of 2020 Democrat turnout as the Control Group for the 2024 election. There is no reasonable explanation for that bump in 2020 other than fraud. The argument that the electorate was motivated to defeat Trump is void. Given the consistency of Democrat turnout in 2012 (black male incumbent), 2016 (first woman candidate) and 2024 (first calico woman candidate), it is unreasonable to expect 2020 turnout (white male codger) to spur enormous turnout given Democrats’ box checking identity based decisions. 2020 was a clear case of organized voter fraud that was treasonous, almost destroyed the planet, and thos who played a part should be arrested, tried and executed

    • Neil, “a friend” of mine suggested that Jesus came back as a Democrat and raptured those 20 million Biden voters to spare them from “evil” times. LoL

    • The irony is why didn’t Vermont ‘s vote totals go up or down much? Either there was no cheating in Vermont or the same amount of cheating…

  2. Instead of building workforce (dormitory) housing for J1 Visa’s we can build modest homes and pay decent wages at ski resorts, not sure I see the problem here.

    • In theory, great. Where are the people coming from to work these jobs? Like pretty much for every other business in this state there is a shortage of workers.

    • Great idea Neil, I’m sure there will be tons of affordable housing at Stowe and Killington for people to work seasonal jobs. Can’t believe no one thought of this lol

    • The problem with ski resort jobs is that they are typically held by younger people . . . a large proportion of which (my son included) have left the state directly due to lost job opportunities and ever increasing taxes/fees.

    • Chris it’s interesting living in a resort town and being in real estate, zoning won’t allow modest home ownership, they do lot’s of studies but no building. But suddenly they get all sorts of green lights for migrant rental housing…… last I knew a bedroom was a bedroom, we only have passion for bike paths, pocket parks and spending grant money by the bucket loads. Our zoning is copied from United Nations and New Jersey….which is all about luxury homes. Heaven forbid modest home ownership happen, notice how all the “affordable home building” is rental properties only? It’s because they are making serious money of the biggest housing scam, $500+/sq ft…..it’s why we don’t’ have modest homes, people are making too much money of building rental properties in their little affordable housing cabal.

    • To Brian: vermont totals didn’t change because Vt doesn’t matter politically. Right now, CNN can call the 2028 Presidential race for whomever has a D after their name.

    • Ski resorts don’t want to hire Americans. They want to hire English speaking foreigners so they can put their “country of origin” on their name tags and all the affluent whites who ski can feel special. After working at Sugarbush myself it is clear this is a marketing strategy to appear like the resort is a “world destination”. It is criminal how they get away with sponsoring H2B visa recipients to fill positions that literally hundreds of US college students apply for every season. They have no shortage of US applicants, they just don’t want to deal with scheduling part-timers…. I’ve boycotted all ski resorts ever since.

    • I’m just wondering what you mean by WE can build homes

I’m not sure if you mean taxpayers but I don’t think it’s up to the taxpayers to build housing for anybody..

And we need less government involvement in private businesses not more

  3. This is EXACTLY what this Socialist state deserves…

“Less federal aid – Vermont is very dependent on federal aid in many places, which might be curtailed or restrained in the coming four years. Unlike the last Trump Presidency, we do not have Patrick Leahy in Washington to advocate for our little state.”

‘Pain’ may be the only thing that wakes up the indoctrinated far-left Vermont electorate, including the complicit far-left Lake Champlain Chamber.

    • My understanding is that Vermont is the most per capita welfare recipient state from the federal gov. It’s all that pork our fed reps bring home.

  4. Nonsense…money will flow to Vermont, and all state governments, as the thinning of the swamp progresses, as will power, that the federal government took/stolen, that should have never left the state.

With state power being returned, from DC, there will come the funds to run it, so the question is…Will Vermont be ready to manage that increased power and money?

Vermont best be ready, as this will happen, and happen quickly.

  5. Boo hoo ! As the Democrats were so fond of saying “elections have consequences” !

  6. When the Governor, and the Republican Party leadersip in Vermont make no bones about how they feel about Trump, and disagree with him much of the time, what is there to expect in return? Common sense applied here will give the answer. Reaping what is sown.

  7. Let’s just give it a go and see what happens. The other party had their chance to do some good for U.S. citizens and blew their chance on billions of aid to Ukraine and some of our adversaries. That plus spending time doling out Lawfare and opening the border to dreamers as well as criminals and drug cartels. Let’s just put a plug in it for now and judge later.

    • I disagree. The Gov has had four years to put something together that would enhance the well being of VT, in case Trump should win. As far as I know, there has been nothing done in this area. Just dig a deeper hole. Is that being productive and in the best interests of VTers? Sometimes it is better to let discretion be the better part of valor, in spite of personal beliefs… and do the couragous right things for the betterment of the whole. Has Scott done that??? If he has, it has not moved the needle enough to say so.

    • It’s so exciting to have Trump as President! Love him or Hate him, he is an extremely hard worker with a Big Vision for America! Trump sets a high standard for work ethics that we should ALL learn from.

Many of us would love and welcome a team such as Elon and Vivek to assess Vermont’s bloated and inefficient government. Perhaps they could start by requiring Vermont Government Workers to acknowledge “Covid work from home” is no longer necessary and they should show up to work.

The Dems/Progs love to depend on Federal Monies/Grants. While the only monies governments have to spend are taxpayer monies, they love to pretend Federal Monies come from a different source. I Hope the Federal Monies dry up for Vermont, so our government can learn how to live within Vermont’s Means.

Since the Dems/Progs over-regulate and over-tax businesses to make them move out of Vermont, their taxpayer monies are eliminated. With the State of Vermont being the largest employer in the State of Vermont, we need to begin to look at and eliminate the unnecessary bureaucrats and government waste.
Maybe then, we could live within our means?

What a thought!! One can Hope!

  8. Isolate Vermont as the cancer it is, kill it and then rebuild in a common sense manner. Or simply give it to the failed state of Canada.

  9. Davis must spend his mornings watching “the view”. The largesse that pat leahy brought to Vermont isn’t going to last much longer, get used to it. We all pay federal income tax and it’s a greater percentage of income than state- no matter what your income. Not paying for the largesse of fantasy and pork barrel legislation is a welcome outcome. Why not have Musk and Ramaswamy earn a percentage of what they save the taxpayer with the soon to be DOGE?
His 5 bullet points all seem like he forgets there is a legislative branch to our government, one that passes laws, allegedly controls the federal purse and hasn’t managed to do a thing about illegal immigration in a decade plus.
Davis is sore about the election- and another carrier of the dreaded TDS disease.
Relax, things might actually work out better than the past 4 years.

  10. Trump’s “total control” is every bit as reined in and restricted by our robust separation of powers and check-and-balance system as is Biden’s total control from his dozens of executive orders. We have had to listen to Biden brag to the media about how he ignores the rulings of the Supreme Court and will “find a way”. It wasn’t just Trump that literally dodged a bullet…the whole country dodged a bullet last week, thank God.

  11. Awwww! All actions have consequences and we are due. Maybe if we kept some of the money we have to send to the federal government, we would be able to fix things ourselves instead of having federal employees, agencies, secretaries, aids, etc (who all get paid) handle our money so our reps and senators can return it and get credit for their “gifting”. Phonies!

    • It used to be that every dollar sent to Washington resulted is .25 cents that was sent somewhere else to help. To break it down for the liberals to understand what it means is that 3/4 of evert dollar the government collected went to administration, salaries, benefits and politics. Of course, not to mention the money they print with nothing to back it up and the corruption behind the curtain.

Now as before, the left and their media hacks will chide Trump for rebuilding the military out of necessity due to billions spent on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the $85 billion dollars’ worth of military weapons, ammunition, helicopters and other vehicles left to our enemies in Afghanistan that included 126,000 fully automatic rifles. The waste is out of control.

Then the brilliant VT voters send two senators and a congresswoman that will not be able to bring any assistance to VT which might be a good thing after all the trillions in wasted covid money that the legislature used as their personal money pot will dry up at the source. The correction for DC is long overdue and Vermont in its lack of wisdom will benefit from the absence of the progressive craziness that won’t happen due to the lack of cash. These are exciting times for people who rejected the demo/progressive in your face arrogance and this is just a start.

  12. Interesting about the “less federal aid” bullet. We also have to consider “less federal jobs”. USCIS employs about 1,400 Vermonters. Most work from home. It was Leahy who brought the USCIS Service Center (one of 4 nationwide) jobs to Vermont. Let’s see if Sanders/Welch can keep them here, or will those jobs go to a state with Senators/leaders more aligned with President-Elect Trump’s Immigration reform.

    • Anyone “remote” nonworker/slugs will be the first to go. Remote work is thievery and fraud by the employee.

  13. Re: “That won’t be the case this time around, he [Trump] has a party molded in his image.”

Austin Davis is still in denial. ‘Just because he can stir the pot, doesn’t mean he knows how to cook’. Yes, Davis is in ‘de nile’ – you know, that river in Africa.

Humorous rhetoric aside, never-Trumpers, this election was NOT about Trump. It was about the people who voted for him. It was about the people who voted to eliminate Vermont’s progressive super-majority. It was about me, and us, winners and losers. It was about restoring the American Constitutional Republic from the precepts of an elitist aristocracy, the same aristocracy that was defeated in the Revolutionary War. The same aristocracy that raises its ugly head from time to time under the precept that it knows better than ‘we the people’. Austin Davis still thinks he knows better. But he couldn’t be more mistaken. See below.

    • Re: “Republicans are likely cutting income taxes further raiding liberal priorities…”

Yes. Get over it. Your liberal priorities are not the priorities of the majority of Americans. Most government subsidies are antithetical to free markets. If anyone is ‘raiding’ anything, it’s the progressive left taking our money and spending it as they see fit, because they think they can invest it more wisely than we taxpayers can. Question: how’s that working for you so far?

    • Re: “…the last time Trump was President, Vermont’s northern border suffered from staff and funding being sent to the southern border, which had detrimental impacts on commerce. “

How so? As I said above, ‘Just because he can stir the pot, doesn’t mean he knows how to cook’. What ‘detrimental impacts’ are you talking about? Be specific.

    • Re: “Vermont’s resorts and businesses are heavily reliant on foreign workers, and the last time there was a Trump Presidency, these programs were restrained.”

Excuse me. Just what do you think happened when your progressive representatives, Leahy, Sanders, Welch, and Shumlin stuck their fingers in the corrupt Jay Peak EB-5 scandal? And since when does being “reliant on foreign workers” justify being reliant on foreign workers here illegally? In case anyone missed it, Mr. Davis just dropped yet another false dichotomy by completely ignoring the many legal immigrants working here under legal H-2A and H-2B visas.

    • Re: “Vermont is very dependent on federal aid in many places….”

Yes. That’s the problem. Perhaps we should be more self-reliant. More personally responsible for our own actions.

“The task of weaning various people and groups from the national nipple will not be easy. The sound of whines, bawls, screams and invective will fill the air as the agony of withdrawal pangs finds voice.” – – — Linda Bowles, Washington Times, December 20, 1994.

    • Re: “It is not partisan to say that the proposed Trump tariffs will negatively impact the U.S. economy and increase the prices of many goods.”

It may not be partisan. But it’s an incorrect assertion – another false dichotomy. Read your citation from The Tax Foundation.

“A tariff is a tax. A tax is a mandatory payment or charge collected by local, state, and national governments from individuals or businesses to cover the costs of general government services, goods, and activities. on imported goods, applied at the border when a business or person in the US purchases a good from abroad. Tariffs increase the price of foreign-produced goods, incentivizing consumers to switch to domestically produced goods and providing domestic producers room to increase their prices.”

Let me repeat, in case you missed it. “Tariffs increase the price of foreign-produced goods, incentivizing consumers to switch to domestically produced goods…” Does that mean domestic producers necessarily increase their prices? No. That’s yet another false premise. In a free market, domestic competition is governed by ‘supply and demand’. Not government subsidies. When a shortage occurs, prices increase temporarily thereby incentivizing other suppliers to compete for customers by providing goods and services ‘Faster, Better, and Cheaper’.

Mr. Davis can deny history all he wants. As I said before, ‘Just because he can stir the pot, doesn’t mean he knows how to cook’.

  14. Trump’s total control creates uncertainty for Vermont, and it should !!

Vermont’s three DC stooges slammed him with there canned rhetoric every chance they had, mostly pure BS and then Vermont’s feckless Governor who couldn’t wait to tell everyone he voted for Harris, just in case the super majority was still in control, conservative Phil now that’s funny………………

    Vermont deserves better,

  15. Vermont has become the laughing stock of America. Half of the state voting for a failed candidate in harris proves why Vermont is dying and not anywhere to buy a home, find a good paying job or live without fear of crime.

  16. Interesting comments here as I contemplate Vermont ‘s future post Trump triumphant massive mandate victory. An historic victory that will save our land, hopefully healing festering, open sores of Marxism at all government levels. Speaking of Marxism we have seen this oppression take root in Burlington and then spread as its’ Bernie based disease along with Clavelle, Leahy, Jeffords and others. A very long time for Regressive not progressivism by definition to infect everything here. Now Trump has a chance to turn our land around and we have to deal with positive change to get our freedoms back. Gov. Scott is a middle roadie Rhino aligned with the left in part and dispicable for supporting the opposition and must have deep hatred for Trump. His problem. I told that administration I would not vote for him years ago despite his veto power standing against our Regressives and their constant Marxist override power. Holding my nose on him for years is old. VT needs a new true conservative leader, John Klar? Others? Help.

  17. My challenge to folks on the left and right is to review the campaign donations to Senators and Congressmen/women scooped up from AIPAC. Do you know an AIPAC lobbyist is assigned to every US representative and senator? AIPAC has offices inside the Capitol building. Why does a foreign State in the Middle East have so much influence ($$) on our government and over us? Does such influence work in the reverse? US Rep. Thomas Massie is one who hasn’t taken the free trip to Isreal. He spilled the beans and no one blinked an eye.

Perhaps people should stop pointing fingers at each other over political affiliations and start looking at who actually is running our country and why. Why is our money and our resources going overseas to the tune of billions upon billions of dollars? If Isreal has so much influence in DC and across our entire country, who is actually lobbying for the American people? If it isn’t China eating our lunch, then it appears Isreal owns our lunch and the kitchen it’s prepared in.

I now understand why the religious overtones are painted over the politicial estabslishment talking points. It always sounds like the Vatican’s way of shaming and guilting into obedience and compliance. All the while, they commit atrocities in the name of reglion. Crimes against humanity. One side stands for Isreal, the other for Palestine and both are taking money in exchange for “weapons of mass destruction”, spilling more blood than the Red Cross, and emptying our pockets on a daily basis.

It isn’t about Trump at all. It is all about the USA being sold out to foreign interests for decades. The scraps thrown to the peasants is just enough to keep everyone distracted and working like dogs. Bread and circuses anyone? The central banks and the foreigners own us and it appears that will not change no matter who sits behind the Resolute Desk.

    • Ooh… Melissa! Touching the third rail! And I thought I was all alone on this topic.

But you are absolutely, 100% correct. Why does no one ask the question “Why do we bow to Israel at every level of our government and society?”, other than, as you said, Thomas Massie?

This is a can of worms we’re going to have to deal with at some point, so we might as well get started. Let’s begin with an easy one. No more dual citizens in federal government positions, either elected or appointed. Choose one loyalty or another. As someone famously said, a man cannot serve two masters.

Ask yourself – Why are there so many Jewish individuals at the highest levels of our government, when they only make up 2.4% of the population? Why is nearly all of the media, from print to television to Hollywood to music, owned and run by Jews? Why are they the heads of our biggest banks? Why do we provide $3.8 billion in aid (mostly military) to Israel on an annual basis? When their national debt (in US dollars) is a mere $335 billion? Why do our politicians sign agreements saying they will be loyal to Israel?

I could go on and on, but the simple answer is that Israel wants to control the world. How are they doing that? Power. How do they get power? They aim to control all of the largest institutions in the world. They do this by infiltrating nearly every last one of them, including our federal government.

How else? Here’s the elephant in the room no one will speak about. By compromising decision makers. Think Jeffrey Epstein. Think AIPAC. Maybe even think Diddy, but we’ll see where that road goes. There *are* pictures of Epstein and Diddy together, you know. Birds of a feather, right? Let’s see those client lists. Let’s see those videos.

And no, I’m not antisemitic. I just go where the facts and my research leads me. In fact, part of me admires Epstein (in a James Bond kind of way) and his execution of his masters’ well thought out plan. But my attitude would be the same if it were the Chinese, the Russians, or the Swedes infiltrating our institutions.

Someone once said that Israel is being saved for last. I can only hope and pray that’s true. Yes, I know what Trump’s Israel rhetoric has been, but I still support him. This is the ultimate problem in terms of complexity. It’s the most complicated bomb ever built, but it has to be defused, which will take time. But I understand that President Trump is the consummate chess player. He has to get all the right pieces in place (or removed) before he can say “Checkmate!”.

    • In fairness, AIPAC isn’t the only lobbying organization out there. There are more than 20 pro-Palestinian PACs set up specifically to counter the Israeli contingent. Not to mention Ukrainian supporters.

Nonetheless, your point is well taken. The entire world stalks its financial prey at the great American watering hole. And they’re running it dry. Its resources are not sustainable. Most unfortunate, however, is the unstoppable nature of this poli-finance philandering that will give rise to “the sound of whines, bawls, screams and invective [filling] the air as the agony of withdrawal pangs finds voice.”

President-elect Trump and his team, who I hope are smarter than I, will find a way to decompress our addiction without ‘the bends’ causing irreversible social damage. But while I am hopeful, I remain personally resolute, diligent, prudent and pragmatic – and recommend everyone do likewise. Godspeed.

    • Perhaps there are silo’s of operations, subversive operations that don’t necessarily coordinate with each other, much like many other military operations, people being on a need-to-know basis. There are many bit players in this world domination/control power trip, siphoning money from the American teat is a favorite past time of many. My God, Vermont is overrun with them! We are insane with NGO’s, non=profits, lobbyist, etc….all doing their bit parts….seems that a group of about 10 in Montpelier are calling the shots, be even those aren’t coming up with their own ideas, they are told what to do……we a truly a marxist experiment in this state.

  18. It is a very healthy thing, that makes me proud, to be an American first, Yankee Second, and lastly, a Vermonter ,seeing this open debate, and folks waking up to the shackles the left has bound the Vermonters with, for so long.

Kudos to you all, and now is the time to finish the job, by making a list of all progressives ,leftists, Dems and find and support good citizen candidates, to run against the left, and throw each and every one out of office, and reclaim our state from the lefts failed experiment, with the goal to send them packing for at least well into the next century!

    It can be done!

Let us keep the movement moving forward…Onward!

  19. This is an ideal time for Vermont elected officials to wean themselves (and special interests lobbyists) off the federal and state tax teat. How about building local industry and developing rewards- and employment-based apprentice training programs? You’re going to have to expect fewer taxpayer handouts in the future as the state ages and educated young people move away. Do without– or–be creative, be bold, be innovatative by working with the private sector. The state’s socialist model no longer works; it doesn’t resonate with many of our hard-working voters outside of Chittenden County.

  20. We Vermont voters are our own worst enemy. We have the second largest education tax on property in the United States, behind only New York! Our elected representatives are planning a sizeable tax on our fuels like heating oil, propane, things we use to heat our homes and run our machinery, All in the name of climate control.
