Three injured in crash outside hospital/ embezzlement/ strangling/ arson

Three people were hospitalized Tuesday afternoon, September 9 after a two-vehicle crash on Hospital Drive near Old Center Road.

Vermont State Police said the crash happened around 1:26 p.m. when a 2013 Ford Fusion, driven by Dezeray Marsh, 20, of Brownington, was entering Hospital Drive from Old Center Road and struck a 2023 Volvo XC60.

The Volvo was operated by Richard Blohm, 82, of Port St. Lucie, Florida. His passenger was Florence Blohm, 78, also of Port St. Lucie.

All three sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital.

CALEX Ambulance and St. Johnsbury Fire Department assisted at the scene. This is the second serious crash reported on Hospital Drive in less than two years. In January 2024, an ambulance taking a patient to the hospital was hit by a Jeep Compass.

Bennington woman charged in alcohol-related rollover

A 27-year-old Bennington woman has been cited after police linked her to a crash that left three young people with life-threatening injuries.

Vermont State Police said troopers and Bennington police responded to Strohmaier Road in Pownal on June 3 after a vehicle left the roadway and rolled over. Three occupants, all under the influence of alcohol, were trapped inside and had to be airlifted to Albany Medical Center.

Investigators later determined that Alexis M. Pecor had furnished the alcohol to the underage victims. Pecor was issued a citation to appear in Bennington Superior Court on Nov. 24 to face a charge of furnishing alcohol to minors with serious bodily injury resulting.

Manchester man accused of firing gun in dispute

A 70-year-old Manchester man has been arrested after allegedly firing a gun during a dispute, Vermont State Police said.

Troopers responded to a report of a firearm discharged during a confrontation between Jason A. Day, 70, and another man, identified as Brady T. West, 39, of Manchester.

Police said Day discharged the weapon while using it in a threatening manner. He was taken into custody and charged with reckless endangerment and criminal threatening.

Day was processed at the Shaftsbury State Police barracks and cited to appear in Bennington Superior Court on Sept. 11.

Westminster man charged with strangling in domestic assault

A 20-year-old man has been charged with domestic assault after Vermont State Police said he strangled a victim during an altercation.

Troopers responded to a Westminster residence and learned that Cole Williams, 20, had allegedly assaulted a 45-year-old resident. Police said Williams fled before being located and taken into custody.

Williams was processed at the Westminster barracks and cited to appear in Windham Superior Court on Sept. 10. He was later lodged at Southern State Correctional Facility.

Hancock woman accused of stealing from Waitsfield employer

Vermont State Police have cited a Hancock woman accused of stealing hundreds of items from the home of her 79-year-old employer in Waitsfield.

Troopers said Morella Dewey reported in August that her housekeeper, Kailah Doyle, 37, had stolen property and sold it online.

Police executed a search warrant at Doyle’s home on Aug. 27 and recovered several hundred items believed to be stolen. Doyle was cited through her attorney and is scheduled to appear in Washington Superior Court on Sept. 25 to face charges of embezzlement and grand larceny.

Police are seeking other potential victims who may have employed Doyle and are missing property.

Lowell camper fire deemed suspicious

A camper fire that broke out Monday afternoon in Lowell is being investigated as suspicious, state officials said.

Firefighters responded to Hazen Notch Road around 3:18 p.m. on Sept. 8 and found a camper trailer filled with smoke. The trailer was unoccupied, and no injuries were reported.

The Vermont Department of Public Safety’s Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit examined the scene and determined the blaze was likely human-caused. The camper sustained heavy smoke and fire damage.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Derby State Police barracks or the Vermont Arson Tip Award Program at 800-32-ARSON. A reward of up to $5,000 is available for information leading to an arrest.

Lyndon man cited in attempted gun purchase

A 78-year-old Lyndon man has been cited after federal background check records flagged a denied gun purchase attempt, police said.

The Lyndonville Police Department said it received notification from the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System regarding Robert Briggs, 78, who attempted to buy a firearm at a licensed dealer.

Officers determined Briggs had made a false statement on a federal firearms transaction form. He was cited to appear in Caledonia Superior Court on Nov. 17.
