Thousands of homes still without power

Thousands of homes and businesses were left without power statewide throughout the day yesterday after a snowstorm swept through the area on Sunday night and Monday morning, the Journal-Opinion reports.

While the snowfall was relatively light in the Connecticut River Valley, some parts of the interior in Vermont received more than half a foot of wet, slushy snow.

Nearly, 34,000 customers across Vermont were without power early Monday morning. That number had dwindled to less than 9,000 by late yesterday afternoon. However, internet outages remain a problem in parts of central Vermont, especially Berlin and Barre.

In Corinth, 465 Green Mountain Power and Washington Electric Cooperative customers were without power as of yesterday at 6:30 p.m. Hundreds more in Newbury, Vershire, Chelsea, Bradford, and Topsham were also still without power.

In a statement posted to its website, Washington Electric Cooperative said that it expected a “significant number” of customers to remain without power overnight.

UPDATE (6:30 a.m.): Per VTOutages.org, there were nearly 6,700 customers around the state without power with Corinth leading the way among municipalities at 372. Vershire had 266.

  1. This is why is is such an incredibly good idea to switch to electric heat for all these homes. /s

  2. Been out of power for a day and a half. They say maybe not back on until tomorrow. But sure, I should have an electric car and an electric heat pump. Say, if I had to leave my frozen house but couldn’t charge my car… then what? These folks in the State House are coddled brats, mostly from Away, and probably don’t even know how to start a chainsaw. Maybe they should ask the guy they pay to actually do stuff. Or check in with the men getting the lines back up. I’m sure they all drive a cute little Mini Cooper SE or whatever. I’ll stick to my wood stove and gasoline powered vehicles, thankyouverymuch.

  3. They plastered solar panels in once pristine fields and erected giant wind turbines onto the mountain tops..yet, the power still goes out, for days even? Look forward to more extra surcharges for storm damage on your power bills. Green energy = green in their pockets, none in ours.
