NBC 5, it’s bad grammar to say “they” when referring to a singular person. In English, “he” or “she” is the correct way to refer to a singular person. “They” is the correct pronoun to use when referring to plural persons.

the gender of the person has been previously asserted.
the gender of the person is unknown, ie. anonymous or unidentified.
