| by the Journal-Opinion An Orange County teenager honored his U.S. Navy veteran grandfather during a Memorial Day ceremony yesterday in Chelsea. Logan Kuban, a 17-year-old Thetford Academy junior, surprised his 82-year-old grandfather Ed Kuban who was in attendance by adding his name to the Veterans Corner at Chelsea School. Ed was seriously injured in a catastrophic fire and series of explosions in 1967 while aboard the USS Forrestal in the Gulf of Tonkin. The disaster killed 134 sailors and injured hundreds more. Young people like Logan give me hope for the future of our country. And too his grandfather, Thank you for your service.
Thank you for your service, Ed. Thank you, Logan for honoring your grandfather.
Very nice of Logan to honor his grandfather in such a manner, too often events such as the fire on the carrier are overlooked or totally forgotten by those not directly affected. Nicely done Logan.
That is a good Grandson. In my first of 2 Med tours with the 6th Fleet I had a room mate who was on USS Forrestal when the mishap happened, off Viet Nam, that killed many of his shipmates. During our tour,1985, Ted, my roommate, told me many stories of the event, and the fires, damage control, and his friends/shipmates that got killed, in a mishap, with a missile, with Sen John McCains plane, and I assure you, what he had to say about that, I can not repeat here, but it was not good. My position aboard our ship was as Fire Marshal, so I listened to his stories keenly, in a professional sense. Even peacetime service is a risk. My thoughts to all killed in that mishap, many fighting to save the ship from fire and explosions, they did a heck of a job but at great cost ,a heroic effort. Bravo Zulu! May they all RIP.
Thank You Logan!
