The Veterans’ Place in Northfield has begun their 2025 fundraising campaign and they are seeking your support!

Over Memorial Day Weekend, I made a quick field trip just up the street to the Veterans’ Place in Northfield for an interview with their Chairman, Lucas Herring, who told me their goal was to raise $200K to help operate their facility in Northfield.

“We’re not looking for a hand out, but a hand up, we call it,” said Herring. “We want to make sure there individuals get the services they need to become housed again and successful in that housing.”

The Veterans’ Place in Northfield, Vermont, is an 18-bed transitional housing program for homeless veterans. It provides a substance-free environment with supportive services, including housing, home-cooked meals, case management, mental health and substance abuse counseling, job training, and assistance navigating medical and administrative barriers.

The program aims to help veterans regain independence and reintegrate into society. It has served over 300 veterans since its founding in 2008, including Paul Mader who was formerly a resident struggling with drug addiction and homelessness, and is now on the board of directors.

From the Times Argus article on Mader:

“When Paul Mader moved to Vermont in 2022, he was a broken man. He had been in prison in Texas five times for a total of 12 years, all drug related. He was a drug addict, and had been for much of his adult life. Fast forward three years: Mader is now clean, sober and happy. Today he is a proud member of the board of directors of The Veterans’ Place in Northfield. Mader credits The Veterans Place with saving his life.”
