The Vermont State Police has identified the victim of a fatal drowning Tuesday night in Lake Champlain as 30-year-old Darren Kemp, a native of South Africa who had been living and working at the Basin Harbor Club for the summer season.

Initial reports mistakenly listed Kemp’s age as 20, but authorities confirmed Wednesday that he was in fact 30 years old following further investigation.

Emergency crews were called to the scene around 9:25 p.m. on June 24 after Kemp reportedly went underwater while swimming offshore from the Basin Harbor Club and did not resurface. Rescue personnel quickly responded, located him in the water, and brought him to shore.

Despite efforts to revive him, Kemp was pronounced dead at 10:10 p.m.

The Vermont State Police is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the drowning. No foul play is suspected at this time.

Basin Harbor Club, a popular resort on the western edge of Addison County, has not yet issued a public statement.
