One of China’s top diplomats in the U.S. visited Vermont last week to meet state leaders for discussions about economics and other areas of interest, China’s consulate in New York said in an announcement today.

Chen Li, the consul general in New York, meet with Lieutenant Governor John Rodgers and Montpelier Mayor Jack McCullough on June 26, the announcement said.

“They exchanged views on economic relations and other issues of mutual interest,” according to the state statement. “During his visit to Vermont, Chen Li also visited local enterprises.”   The statement didn’t say which companies Chen visited.

Chen Li, a consul general for the People’s Republic in China, met in Montpelier last week with VT Lt. Gov. John Rodgers and Montpelier’s mayor Jack McCullough.

Chen’s visit comes amid trade and geopolitical differences between the two countries.  China nevertheless ranks as the world’s No. 2 economy and boasts the world’s second-largest population. China’s GDP grew by 5.4% in the first quarter of 2025 from a year earlier; by contrast, the U.S. economy shrank 0.5%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Notable Vermont companies doing business in China include snowboard maker Burton. China’s winter sports industry has boomed following its hosting of the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The Chinese Consulate in New York oversees the country’s day-to-day affairs in 10 north and northeastern states: New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, and Rhode Island.

Chen started his U.S. posting last October. He was previously China’s ambassador to Finland.

The author, a former long-time editor at Forbes, graduated from Mt. St. Joseph in Rutland and lives in Rutland.

  1. I am sorry for asking, but why would a China diplomate even other to come to Vermont? Why? Did this diplomat go to Tennessee or Florida?

    • I will answer my own question. According to Google AI: Regarding recent visits (July 2025) by a high-ranking Chinese diplomat to the U.S., the information indicates that Wang Yi, China’s top diplomat, has been focusing his visits on European countries like Germany and France, as well as the EU headquarters in Brussels. This seems to be part of an effort to improve relations with Europe amid strained relations with the United States.

    • I’m not sorry for asking, but did you even read the article? Answers to your questions lie within.

    • Why is he here discussing anything about economics in our State! We don’t anything Chinese in our State period. They are trying to buy up a lot of land in our Country! This is inviting the freaking Fox into the Hen House! China is our enemy! They hate us! Our legislators have no business conspiring with the enemy! Wake Up People! Between them and the Islamists we are going to lose our Country if we don’t stand up against them now!😡😡😡😡

    • Don’t believe anything Google says! This is all about Globalization! Don’t let them fool you! It has nothing to do with wanting better relationships! Look at the Chinese in Maine and the Islamists there! We cannot get complacent!

    • David Davis: please clarify, “other areas of mutual interest.”

  2. China is the world’s largest air polluter people in state gov know this complain about air quality but back China due to business and money. Tax Vermonters more because of China’s air that gets here. Who benefits?

  3. China is buying influence, and John Rodgers, not to mention the Vermont legislature, is for sale.

  4. Will you find announcement of meetings with India? Scandinavian countries? England? How about Poland or Hungary?

Why China? Why was our Burlington mayor enamored with Russia? Venezuela?

Is there a common theme or thread?

Why do we follow UN dictates over our constitution?

    • Socialism and Globalization! Then the Islamists want to destroy all Westernized countries especially the United States! The Truth is out there!

  5. The tariffs have destroyed the markets for soybean sold to China by large mid west farmers. Maybe Rogers can cut a deal and sell them Vermont maple products or have China buy up the land in Vermont to bail out the bankrupt real estate market. We may need someone to bail out our bond debt in Vermont. Inquiring minds would like to know. Comments made by Richard Day.

    • Which tariffs? The tariffs China has applied to our US goods for decades or the tariffs of same value as theirs the we now apply to their goods reciprocally

  6. Why was a list of companies visited not provided to the press nor to the public???

Was Li taken to view the border or view VT’s air defenses ?

Did he visit IBM or other sensitive technology or defense firms?

    Please list places visited.

Is he, perhaps, Lindy Li’s Uncle ,visiting from the Fatherland ?

    Why Vermont and why now?

Were the CI folks at the FBI informed of his visit, in advance, and provided an itinerary of where he visited?

Guy,can you dig into this, being VT Digger only digs one sided slant/propaganda?

    Thanks in advance.

  7. Here’s a good reason to avoid Chinese foods:
“Few foods scream “America” louder than a hot dog. You’ll find them everywhere — lunch trays, birthday parties, and especially at sporting events. And when it comes to iconic dogs, Nathan’s Famous is hard to beat — a brand grilling since 1916. But here’s the twist: Nathan’s hot dogs are produced under license by Smithfield Foods — a major U.S. company owned since 2013 by WH Group, a Chinese meat giant based in Kowloon, Hong Kong, and one of the world’s largest pork producers.”

Makes one wonder if these dogs are made with Morris the Cat. Has anyone seen Morris lately?

Popular American Hot Dog Brand Is Owned By A Company In China

    Another Article comments:
    1. “China is actively acquiring food-related businesses across the United States, highlighting its critical need to address a major vulnerability: the lack of a self-sufficient food supply. By investing in American agriculture and food production, China is taking strategic steps to secure its food sources and reduce dependency. This trend underscores the importance of safeguarding our nation’s food industry for our own security and sustainability.”
    2. Now on the list, hanging on my refrigerator door: Never Buy: Nathan’s, Smithfield, Farmland, nor Eckrich Products

  8. A Congressional Committee should immediately be formed to investigate John Rodgers and Jack McCullough. Are they meeting with Communist Chinese Officials to help orchestrate a Vermont Land Grab by the Chinese Government? It’s a reasonable question to ask. Conservative States in the US are now drawing up legislation to keep the Chinese Government from purchasing land in their respective States. We The People need to stand up for Ourselves. Our Elected Leaders are not here to help us. They are here to help themselves. GOD BLESS VERMONT !!! GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA !!!

  9. “The Chinese Consulate in New York oversees the country’s day-to-day affairs in 10 north and northeastern states: New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, and Rhode Island.”

What type of “day-to-day” affairs would China have to tend to in 10 USA states? Are we to believe China is a friend or a foe? We are in a great race for technological world supremacy against whom? The Wuhan wiggle was just a bad dream? The BRICS nations are led by whom? Iran sells most of it’s energy to whom? Who do we stand with Taiwan against whom? Is there a red line to the collossal levels of bs the American public is being spoonfed on a daily basis, while foreign countries leverage every stick, stone, and blades of grass under our feet?

Greatest show on earth – I guess the “red” tide spoken of has washed up and over our country without barely anyone noticing or giving a damn. Money for nothing and metric tons of fentanyl and “spice” for free.
