Forms Tariff Decision Support Team

The following statement was received this afternoon from Gov. Scott’s press secretary:

Governor Phil Scott has directed his Administration to take a disciplined and measured approach to any major proposals coming from Washington, D.C.

In last week’s meeting of the Governor’s Cabinet, Scott asked his team to remain disciplined, thoughtful and factual when evaluating and responding to changes in federal policy. This includes taking time to fully assess each proposal and distinguish between what is rhetoric, and what is real, in terms of impacts to Vermont.

“We cannot be in a constant state of fear, panic and disruption over the next four years,” Governor Scott said.

The Governor noted that while there will be areas of disagreement, there may also be policy positions which could be beneficial to Vermont.

“We need to stay focused on Vermont and remain disciplined as we distinguish between what is fact and what is rhetoric before we react to any change in federal policy or law. We will follow through on Vermonters’ priorities: housing, education, public safety, and affordability, and do our part to unite Americans by focusing on solutions and results, not the chaos and anger being used to divide us.”

Governor Forms Decision Support Team on Potential Tariffs

As a result of President Trump’s recent proposal on tariffs, Governor Scott has tasked Secretary of Commerce and Community Development Lindsay Kurrle with leading a multi-agency effort to assess the possible impacts on Vermont. While the tariffs have been paused for 30 days, the Decision Support Team will begin its work immediately, so Vermont is prepared for any further changes in policy.

“As I have said in the past, I am not a fan of increasing tariffs on our friends and close allies. And most Vermonters agree, a trade war with our largest trading partner, which could increase costs on already overburdened working families, seems like a bad idea,” Governor Scott said. “But we should be fair and take time to understand what problem the President intends to solve, the results he expects to get, and the risks he’s willing to take, before we cast judgement.  We need actual data and credible analysis to demonstrate disadvantages we are concerned about.”

The Governor added, “while the President’s tariffs would undoubtedly be very disruptive, and the risk of higher prices has been well reported, I have directed my team to weigh the outcomes fairly and objectively,” he said.

Governor Scott also charged the team with identifying options for mitigating short-term and long-term impacts on consumers and ratepayers, as well as opportunities for expanding any potential upside.

“The Governor has asked for a tangible analysis of net impacts, not a knee jerk reaction to the idea of tariffs or the unfortunate friction trade federal policies create with our very good friends to the north and that is exactly what we’re going to provide,” Secretary Kurrle said.

While the President has paused potential tariffs for 30 days, Kurrle said the team will continue reviewing the President’s proposals and she will update the Governor weekly and as necessary.

The interagency team includes:

  • Agency of Commerce and Community Development
  • Department of Labor
  • Agency of Agriculture
  • Public Service Department

  1. When Trump snaps the whip GOVIE has to dance. Looks like somebody else is playing the music.

  2. My only question – are there Canadian tariffs still in place and do they get the same comment and scrutiny as Trump’s imposed tariffs? By the way, does Canada export maple syrup to Vermont? I usually shop for syrup at farms here in Vermont that produce their own syrup so I’m not informed about Canadian syrup.

    • Another example, Canada has a 200% tariff on dairy from the U.S. Farmers on both sides of the boarder are subsidized by their governments. Let’s end all subsidies and let a real free market without fraud, coercion and capital capture settle things.

  3. Like the Governor has a choice? I don’t think so. Sometimes reality bites hard.
    More to come.

  4. If all his appointments are confirmed, the first Cabinet meeting will include ideas on how to inflict some pain on Vermont.

    • Doubtful. Trump has bigger fish to fry than the socialist/marxist in Vermont whining about how unfair things are. His agenda is to right some wrongs that previous administrations have caused and work to insure those things don’t happen again.
Two weeks in, has anything happened that would adversely affect Vermont? No-
but some very positive things have happened. Relax and see what happens.
Those who enjoyed and profited from the clinton, obama and biden years- you are sure to be disappointed. The majority of Americans and even a majority of Vermonter’s might just end up better off because of Trump and MAGA.
While phil scott is correct to have a “disciplined and measured” approach to future events, he too might just realize it isn’t Trump that was out to get us…
sanders, balint and welch all went to Washington, promising to change things for us, all they’ve accomplished is to make themselves richer.

    • Don’t be so sure Frank, Trump blinked on Canada and Mexico, that’s why he picks on places like Puerto Rico and Columbia. I’d be nervous if I were Grenada, he needs a W.

    • Trump inflicting pain in Vermont? It’s the progressive communists that are inflicting the pain on Vermont citizens. Trump is the pain killer.

    • John, given the events occurring world wide, I would daresay that a far left State such as Vermont ranks close to if not the bottom on Trump’s radar

  5. What !!!,

We cannot be in a constant state of fear, panic, and disruption over the next four years, Governor Scott said !!

The citizens of the state have been in a state of “FEAR ” ever since you started to cower to the progressives in the state house, and let them run over you with their foolish policies, and their ” we’re in power ” bravado, Governor’s leadership, it’s more like ineptness, or spinelessness comes to mind, from what I see it’s all talk thus far, you can smile for the camera, but we’re watching……….

  6. Trump’s threat of a tariff on Canada persuaded Justin to close the northern border via the use of 10,000 Canadian troops. Fewer drug deaths, fewer terrorists strolling into the United Sates…….yea, I can see why the libs in Vermont hate Trump and his policies.

    • And THAT is the part that is left out by the Left. They only focus on how expensive things will get as they can’t see past it. If they did, they would see our borders getting secure after the threat was made and now the tariffs will NOT be in place.

    • except they don’t leave it out, they know well what is going on, its propaganda, good propaganda has truth, really good propaganda is all truth used to tell a lie, that’s where it gets sophisticated and where people have to discern. One way, you can tell a tree by its fruit.

That simple statement leaves many exposed to their true heart and desires.

  7. So Scott said “No Comment”. Got it. YOU HAVE NO CHOICE, SCOTT…IT IS FEDERAL LAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Obey or secede!

    • Well, secede for him would be prison. He can’t take “his” state and leave, many of us like being in the United States.

    • I Hope you are right Joan.

Gov. Scott has no problem breaking and manipulating the Law as it suits him and he has an Attorney General who does the same.

Scott doesn’t uphold our Rights and Freedoms as laid out in the Supreme Law of our State and US Constitutions. He has taken actions and signed many Bills that are Un-Constitutional yet, he is not held accountable.

      To name a few:

He allowed the remake and corruption of our Vermont Election System which is now un-auditable and untrustworthy; and he says nothing as Illegals, Minors and Many Students with out of state residencies are allowed to register to vote in Vermont.

He signed Vermont on as a Member of the US Climate Alliance committing Vermont to radical “global” climate policies; laying the groundwork for the Leftists/Dems/Progs to pursue extreme and unaffordable climate policies for Vermont.

He has allowed and invited illegal immigration to thrive throughout Vermont. He pretends he is not violating Federal Immigration Laws. Any person who can read knows the federal government has authority over immigration not a state government.

While Marijuana is illegal federally, Scott continues to allow the Marijuana Industry to grow and thrive in Vermont. This in spite of the damage that is obvious to the brains and lives of Vermont Citizens; especially the developing brains of children. He openly sought and welcomed a Vermont Marijuana Farm Owner to run and become his Lt. Governor.

He violated our Constitutions, the Helsinki Accords and the Nuremberg Code in making Vermont Citizens take experimental Covid Shots. How many have been injured or died as a result. Along with shots, Scott tyrannically mandated the wearing of useless face masks and he decided what to shutdown, who was essential and who was non-essential.

ALL this to say, Phil Scott has shown us what he believes and who he is. He doesn’t stand up for what is Lawful or Right for “The Vermont People.” It will be interesting to see what happens if he is forced to sacrifice federal funds.

  8. Vermont legislators better not get too bold. Take a look at the state budget, the majority of the money is from the Federal government. Comply or pay your own way. And paying your own way isn’t a Vermont virtue.

Where is the Republican cost and tax cutting plan?

Why hasn’t the VTGOP found a VT Musk?

Didn’t a bunch of VTGOP elected reps run on being astute businesspersons? Show us your game!

    • Dude, the VTGOP is in on it. They would never want change in Vermont, they are a planned perfect foil, they protest and act like they want to do something, the Dems blame the Republicans and what is the result. We get more of what is planned by the 10 puppets who run this state, it’s not the people, surely.

The VTGOP will not allow anyone or any group to build within the party, they are a bit more sophisticated than the bludgeon techniques used by the VTDems……make no mistake they don’t want change.

Want to know what the Dems and Republicans of Vermont can completely agree upon? They don’t want a third party, anything but that. We are being played.

  9. The Federal spigot get’s shut off and the State britches fill. The biggest adjustments to be made is order more Depends. The 24/7 laundry service is hereby suspended and hopefully dismantled. Our money afterall and it is high time we find out where it actually goes, to whom and for what…they don’t want us to know and that is why the panic is off the charts.

  10. Re: “As I have said in the past, I am not a fan of increasing tariffs on our friends and close allies. And most Vermonters agree, a trade war with our largest trading partner, which could increase costs on already overburdened working families, seems like a bad idea,” Governor Scott said.

This is how stoopid Scott is. It’s not a trade war; it’s a drug war to stop the flow of fentanyl into our country. He applied tariffs to make Canada and Mexico secure their borders and stop the drug trade. We already had two incidents regarding illegal aliens with weapons and the death of a Border Patrol Agent in Vermont. If Canada were our friends and allies this would have already been done and Trump would not have to take any action, but Canada and Mexico are run by the same type of corrupt politicians that control the Vermont legislature.

In 2020 there were 93,331 fentanyl deaths in the United States of which my son was one of them.

    https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/nchs_press_releases/2021/20210714.htm

Now we have these fools like Scott telling us it’s a trade war. I repeat at the risk of being repetitive, Scott is not a Republican he is a stooge elected by the progressive communists, a puppet whose strings are pulled by them. As far as Vermont is concerned Vermont deserves all the comeuppance that Trump heaps upon it.

  11. The web of corruption and self funding is being exposed, it will lead directly to Vermont, who conveniently swept the largest EB-5 scandal under the rug. This was business as normal in Vermont, see how easily that just went by-bye?

They will find massive corruption, insider deals, will Vt Digger suddenly lose funding due to closer of USAID? Vermont is FULL of ngos and nonprofits running and ruining our little state. Tax dollars going to PP, going to PPPac, going to dem party? When he shuts down the indoctrination factory, Vermont will be forced to come up with a new school plan, and not the communist new school.

Doge will be coming to Vermont, because we are in a massive web of insider trading, Bailant being bought by one person for a million dollars and nothing happens? No out cry from VT GOP, that’s for sure!

We are so mired in inside deals we think it’s normal business, and our leader clearly thinks his little fiefdom is immune.

Popcorn is awesome this time of year.

  12. Pres. Trump and Gov. Scott should work together to create a program so the migrant workers on Vt .farms can stay and work on the farms without living in fear of being deported. And the farmers could stop living in fear that their migrant farm workers could be rounded up and deported leaving the farms in dire situations with nobody to milk the cows. I remember when Pres. Trump was first elected he told the congress to create a bill that would fix The Dreamers situation and he would sign it. Congress refused and eight years later The Dreamers are still living in limbo. Surely, there is a common sense solution for the migrant workers. I am not afraid that Trump would round up the migrant farm workers and destroy what the few Vermont farms that are remaining, but I hear that migrant workers are afraid. I hear the children in Winooski are also living in fear. When I listen to the local news I can understand where this fear comes from and it is not from Trump. I was not afraid of Trumps tariffs or the increase in costs. This was just fear mongering by the media and the democrats. We wont be able to buy avocadoes for the Super Bowl. I saw plenty at the grocery store.

    • Governor Phil Scott ….

Kristi Noem …. Head of homeland security showed up to go up to our northern border and see what was going on because a border patrol agent was shot and killed in our little state of Vermont..

We are no longer safe in our little stake because of the invasion of illegal immigrants crossing our northern border

Where were you…. You are telling vermonters that you are concerned for their safety and you don’t show up to meet with one of the most important people in America who is defending our borders and our security across America…. What kind of a governor are you when you don’t show up for this important event in the state of Vermont…..

You have slapped Vermonters in the face on every occasion you could and now you claim you’re going to make things better for us but you still neglect your duties as governor…

I’m watching President Trump right now signing an order to prevent men from playing in women’s sports

He was announcing all of the Republican governors that were in attendance because they agreed of the harm in places these young female athletes in when competing against a male

Again no Governor Phil Scott for Vermont … You are not for Vermont when you are not attending these important events that our great president is doing to protect the women in America and to protect all of us from illegal aliens and the other evils that we face every day in America…

You cannot be for Vermont and ignore vermonters….
