Sanders urges global tax on the ultrarich

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (MN-05), along with 16 of their colleagues in the Senate and House, today urged President Biden and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to support Brazil’s historic G20 initiative to establish a global minimum tax on the world’s ultrawealthy. The letter comes ahead of the G20 meetings this July during which Brazil, the current president of the G20, will reportedly push for a joint declaration on the initiative.

“We write to urge your administration to support an important initiative at the G20 to foster international cooperation on taxation of ultrawealthy individuals,” wrote the members.

“Every tax dollar not paid by a billionaire could have been used to invest in our communities, address climate change, and support public goods – from education to health care to infrastructure – that are critical to prosperity and a strong economy,” wrote the members.

The letter argues that support for the initiative from the Biden Administration would not only strengthen America’s global leadership on any number of intersecting issues, but also help the administration’s domestic efforts to achieve a fairer tax system at home – including Biden’s plan for a 25% minimum income tax on the ultrawealthy.

Sanders and Omar are joined on this letter by Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.), and 13 members in the House. It is endorsed by a number of leading organizations and academics, including: AFL-CIO, Americans for Financial Reform, Americans for Tax Fairness, Community Change, Groundwork Collaborative, Oxfam America, Patriotic Millionaires, Public Citizen, and Take on Wall Street.

  1. The globalist socialist movement has wanted to adopt global taxation standards for some time.

    • Global Tax Program (GTP) supports advisory services and technical assistance focused on strengthening tax institutions and mobilizing revenues fairly and efficiently at the international and domestic levels.

Domestic Revenue Mobilization (DRM) is a central pillar of the global 2030 Financing for Development agenda, reflecting the financing needed in many developing countries to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  2. Sanders is doing the loopy loop again. Just like a broken record. He can’t respond intelligently when confronted with facts from the U.S. Treasury that the top 1% pay 42% of all U.S. tax So let’s move on to Globally; except Sanders is a Senator of the U.S. not the world. Time to sit down and shut up Bernie.

  3. How about a tax on millionaire politicians like Bernie who somehow amassed a lot of money on a government salary?

    • Yep. Exactly. Elect Gerald Malloy, WP Grad, Army Major, global business man always in service to the USA- beautiful wife and family . Elect Malloy for US Senate and oust Bernie Sanders. 4. Someday someone will ask Bernie how many times he can spend the same money he claims he can squeeze out of the ultra rich. If you take away 100% of the wealth of all the country’s billionaires you’d run the country for a couple of months without beginning to pay down any of the $36 trillion of debt. Bernie has proposed spending this money over and over and over as if he understands math. He clearly has no idea what he’s talking about. But somehow the academics and media people like what he’s saying so they never dig even an inch below the surface to understand that it’s complete bs.

  5. Have you ever wondered why there never has been a successful communist country? Here is the insanity in plain sight.

  6. The trick is to talk about stuff that won’t happen (a global tax) or otherwise compartmentalize your ideas carefully so the contradictions are not immediately obvious (higher minimum wage means nothing when employers can hire an uncontrolled number of illegals).

That way you can stir up anger, make your marks feel smart and never have to take responsibility for the fact that nothing ever changes.

As a side benefit you can also slip a couple of hundred grand to you stepson to be your “consultant”.

    Great gig, Bernie.

  7. Has a lefty pol ever come up with 1 single “plan” that wasn’t about raising taxes? One?

  8. The confusion of chaos.

“Liberals fleeing ‘conservative’ Vermont?” – Drudge, referencing…

“Bernie Sanders has lost Vermont, Working-class voters are fleeing the state” – UnHerd

It’s little wonder the MSM doesn’t understand anything. Now it’s Vermont’s ‘liberals’ moving to New Hampshire, Florida, Tennessee, the Carolinas, and Texas. It’s just like the nonsensical LGBTQ++ community’s psychobabble endorsing the hardcore Sharia Hamas Islamists in Gaza.

    It makes no sense.

  9. Hey Bern, How much extra have you paid? If you believe there should be more tax collection did you know you can voluntarily pay more taxes to help out the struggling government. C’mon Bernie why haven’t you given that little extra?
