Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), joined by Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD), introduced legislation Tuesday Jan. 13 to prohibit sitting presidents from naming or renaming federal buildings, land, or other assets after themselves.
“It’s no secret that President Trump is undermining democracy and moving this country toward authoritarianism. Part of that strategy is to create the myth of the ‘Great Leader’ by naming public buildings after himself — something that dictators have done throughout history,” Sanders said in a written statement. “For Trump to put his name on federal buildings is arrogant and it is illegal. We must put an end to this narcissism — and that’s what this bill does.”
Dubbed the ‘Stop Executive Renaming for Vanity and Ego (SERVE) Act,’ the bill would:
– Ban the use of federal funds for signage or promotions related to such namings.
– Require restoration of original names in cases where changes have already occurred.
The move follows recent controversy over the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where the board voted to incorporate President Donald Trump’s name into the venue’s title, which prompted backlash from Kennedy family members and critics who argue it violates the spirit of federal memorials.
Sanders also called the practice “arrogance and narcissism,” emphasizing the need to protect national institutions from personal vanity.
With Republicans controlling Congress, the legislation faces an uphill battle for passage.

How about we rename church street, Trump Street?
Or rename the building that Bernie has his office in as Trump Plaza? I’d vote for that.
Bernie’s jealous, nothing named after him. Maybe we could have an anti grifter law named after him.
This from the Marxist that was promoting the renaming of every building and sports team, to be like the communists in China erasing our history is pretty rich.

Thinking about Church street, and my church street in Middlesex, it might seem that somebody is working overtime on both streets.
Our church was burnt to the ground, and in Burlington where people are lost in crime and drugs. Seems that perhaps somebody is working overtime in our state, and what is one of the lead stories in VTDIGGER, but pagan and witches.
Now, question for you, if you think it’s ok for paganism and witchcraft and that these spirits are real, then why wouldn’t you want to be involved with the Holy Spirit instead?
Why would you want to be ruled by demons? Power, money and fame of course, that’s the promise anyway, but it’s a lie.
He’ll steal your peace, just like he’s stolen the peace of most every Vermonter, who is living in fear, hate and division.
We can have hell on earth, or bring down a bit of heaven……as we are taught to pray, , on earth as it is heaven…..TGBTG

Can we expand that bill so it covers living senators and congresspersons (both current and ex)? Never understood why we needed a Leahy airport and a Leahy Echo center while he is still alive
What a clown! There are way more important issues to be worked.
It used to be that buildings were typically only named after persons AFTER they have shed their mortal coil. Who started the new trend? One example is the Leahy airport.
It’s not like the BTV airport was previously named for a slave owner or eugenics proponent and “needed a new name”. Sounds like another case of Trump Derangement Syndrome with complications of petty jealousy by Sanders. Leahy avoided any accusations of “vanity” by not re-naming the airport himself…someone else proposed it. Trump could just do the same thing. Bernie, go back to complaining about capitalism and billionaires.
BS is doing it for headlines, notoriety, relevance. He has three nice homes, have each one named TRUMP TOWER 1, TRUMP TOWER 2 & TRUMP TOWER 3. Let him chew over that.
I’m glad Sanders and company has their fingers on the pulse of what concerns so many Vermonters and our fellow Americans. I say this sarcastically for those who may not have my sense of humor. What a waste of time and effort.
Hey Bernie…look back behind, at your whole political career, at how the only thing you bettered was your personal wealth, on the taxpayer labors, and you left Burlington behind in shambles, so full of junkies, that they even had to bring in the State Police, to police it, You wife left the collage she headed in shambles except for your bank accounts that got fat, and the rest of the bills you put forth, amounted to about a combined total, as it takes to make a decent piss hole in the snow, while you run your mouth like the fast talking NTC city slicker you are, while selling out to big pharma, while waving your arms around like you are possessed by some kind of demon…It is beyond me how you can even live with yourself.
Do us a favor and go retire on the fat pension, the taxpayer funds…really we had enough of your BS,BS.
