False identity, all in the family – A Brownington man was charged with identity theft and providing false information to law enforcement after an investigation revealed he had impersonated a relative during a police incident, authorities said.
The Lyndonville Police Department reported that on Dec. 8, they discovered the passenger who had identified himself as “Aaron Prue” in an earlier incident was actually Matthew Prue, 44, of Brownington.
The misidentification came to light after a complaint was filed regarding the true identity of the individual involved.
Record checks indicated that Matthew Prue, the accused, was wanted on two active arrest warrants—one issued by the Vermont Parole Board and another from Orleans County.
The incident in question took place on Severance Hill Road on Dec. 1 at 2:26 p.m. It was during this event that Matthew Prue allegedly used the identity of Aaron Prue, 46, also a Brownington resident.
The Lyndonville Police Department has since applied for an arrest warrant for Matthew Prue in relation to this case.
The charges levied against him include identity theft and filing false reports with law enforcement.
