Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT) wants to set term limits for the Supreme Court, disband the Electoral College, decommission offshore oil and gas wells, and protect Palestinians from deportation.

That’s all according to press releases published this month on his own and colleague’s Senate websites. Here’s a flavor:

Welch Introduces Constitutional Amendment To End Undemocratic Electoral College

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and U.S. Senators Brian Schatz (D-HI) and Peter Welch (D-VT) introduced a constitutional amendment to abolish the Electoral College system and restore democracy by allowing the direct election of presidents through popular vote alone.

“Our democracy is at its strongest when everyone’s voice is heard—and right now our elections aren’t as representative as they should be because of the outdated and flawed electoral college.  I’m excited to partner with my friends and colleagues Senator Schatz and Chair Durbin on this important constitutional amendment, which will help empower every voter in every state,” said Welch.

  1. I know many perceive Welch as a smart man. He is NOT ! He has no idea why this ‘Constitutional Republic Experiment’ has survived as long as it has. Not does he understand the framework of how our First Fathers setup our government, choosing to avoid all the mistakes of corruption pre Revolutionary War. Eliminating Electoral College vote would give a voice to large population cities, and keep the rest of the country slaves to the desires of cities. No large city has the best interest in roual areas, or farming, or mining, nor understands what it requires to make it succeed. Elimination of the electoral would mean 50.5% would rule over the other 49.5% always. Because our 50 states are so different, a popular vote (which could eminate from 7 or 8 of our largest cities) would rule over the rest of the USA. Since these large cities are all Blue states, the Republicans would loose every time. There would be no purpose of having a vote at all. The DNC would decide on their pick and that would be the new President.
WANTING THAT IS NOT INTELLIGENT ❗

    • Re: Not does he understand the framework of how our First Fathers setup our government… No, Bob V, he understands exactly how and why the founder’s setup our government that’s why he wants to change it so the Commiecrats can rule in perpetuity. He is only doing what his masters bid him to do, and he is helped by the stoopid people that vote him in office.

And the world’s few… evil people have little power without the help of the world’s many stupid people. As a result, stupidly is a far greater threat than evil – Gurwinder Bhogal

“That’s the real threat to Democracy, stupid people. – Donald Trump

    • Getting rid of the outdated electoral college is a great idea. The electoral college should be grouped together with DEI initiatives like racial and gender quotas: they make no sense and are undemocratic. Bob V says the Republicans would loose (sic) every time. Well, Trump just won the popular vote this year. What we need are opinions that hold up to fact checking.

    • welch wants a “democracy”. The United States government is a Constitutional Republic. Designed that way for a reason- that does not serve welch and his cronies. Perhaps repeal the 17th Amendment instead, to return to the founder’s original intent- not have the US Senate a country club for welch and others- including mcconnell, schumer, sanders and others.

    • PETER: PLEASE consider what you are proposing. You are guaranteeing that California would forever elect our President. If you recall Clinton beat Trump by about 2 Million popular votes BUT SHE WON CALIFORNIA BY 3M. That means she lost the rest of the country by 1 M. The founding fathers put the Electoral College in place to prevent exactly that type of situation.

    • This is directed at “Skippy” My old man was a janitor at Dartmouth College back in the 60’s. One of his favorite adages was “The smarter they are the dumber they get”

  2. Welch hates our constitution. He hates the first amendment, the second and the fourth. He hates the fourteenth amendment too because he hates white people. He also has hatred for the electoral college and for a Supreme Court that is independent. He really hates that we could be self sufficient in energy production if we want to be. In short, he hates America and he despises ordinary Americans.

But it’s OK, he will make sure he is in front of the camera when he gets to throw a few federal dollars to the plebs ( filtered through his friends of course)..

  3. The only thing outdated is Peter Welch and the gaggle of fools pushing this proposal,
we all see what he’s trying to do, stack the election, and that’s why the framers put this in place.

Wake up people, power-hungry fools, wanting to stay in power, why isn’t Welch working on real issues for the country, and not just his party, he’s just a puppet !!

  4. Thank God we are in a MAGA world now because this will never happen. Welch is just showing his Commiecrat friends he is still down with their agenda. Destroy the Constitution.

  5. Hey Peter, Peter Inside Stock Trader – Sleepy Joe thinks members of Congress should not be allowed to engage in stock market trading – any comment? Do you agree? Did you send Nancy some flowers after her tumble? How much did you make shorting UnitedHealthcare? Did you swear an oath to defend the Constituion of the USA or defend foreign interests and your stock options? No honor among thieves and they’re all about rat each other out as their pirate ship is taking on a lot of water these days. J6 is an incoming moab, hence the “cue the drones!”

    • Looks like you got his number!! Too bad there are so many ignorant brain dead people in Vermont that think he is good for the country. I do not!

    • Not to mention he’s never shown us his positive proof of Russian collusion he swore he had live on WVMT!!

  6. It never ceases to amaze me how constitutionally illiterate Democrats are… especially Dick Durbin and Peter Welch…. as though they have never understood constitutional Federalism.

But of course, they understand. They simply want to eliminate all of the tried-and-true constitutional checks and balances limiting the scope and power of a centralized government, pre-empting State’s Rights and individual liberty and freedom.

As with everything the Democrats suggest, read the title or the stated purpose of their proposals. Their intent is typically just the opposite. The Affordable Care Act. The Inflation Reduction Act. The Reproductive Liberty Amendment. Oxymoronic all.

We should call the Durbin/Welch proposed bill ‘The Two Wolves and a Lamb Vote on What To Have For Lunch Act’.

  7. Every democrat out to have a framed and embroidered cloth hanging in their office. And it should say:

If you don’t like the rules, change the rules!

They do it all the time. Mercy! Now, didn’t Welch take an oath to uphold the Constitution when he took office? Didn’t he put his hand on a Bible when taking that oath? And yet here he is, working overtime to overthrow that same Constitution.

You want a Constitutional Amendment? Here you go. 1) Term limits. 2) National Voter ID – to include a national holiday for voting, only one day for voting, no mail-in ballots, paper ballots only, counting done and submitted by midnight, and elimination of “ranked-choice voting” in those states, counties, and towns that have it.

  8. So he’s selling out Vermont once again? Vermont would have zero vote influence without the electoral college. Of course no press will question him on his stupid remarks. Vermont is in a isolation chamber of stupidity from overdosing on propaganda, free us please from this living hell.

  9. “Restore our democracy”. Restore what? This is a Republic. As such Vermont gets a say despite it’s tiny population. This dullard wants to disinfranchise his state. This is what the people here want I guess. Sad.

  10. If the Electoral College is “undemocratic” and therefore should be abolished, what about the Senate itself, where Vermont has the same voting power as Texas? And if the Supreme Court should have term limits, again, what about the Senate? Such tiresome hypocrisy.

  11. Senator Welch needs to explain to all Vermonters why he wants to abolish one of the pillars of our democracy – equal representation under our constitution. Please Guy and Paul, go after him and get an answer. We deserve to know why.

  12. The Electoral College was designed to balance the power of voting between urban and rural America. That constitutional principle is still valid. Welsh is way off base. It’s not that he doesn’t understand, he’s parroting the Progressive party line, so popular in VT.

  13. The electoral college worked just fine, until the Dems lost… now the Welcher wants to Welch out of his promise to uphold the constitution, and our way of governance, so his side can become the permanent ruling class, then they no longer need those pesty elections, that just get in the way of the progressive agenda…pure Pravda driven commie rule over the serfs it is.
    VOTE THEM OUT!
    You’re next welsher…

  14. Headline Fixed:

Post-election, Welch seeks end to ‘outdated’ Constitutional Republic

    😂

  15. I do not agree with any policy’s of our democrat representatives. I also think that those that voted for them need to search their souls and see if that is what THEY really agree with.

  16. How come Vermont continues to elect morons like welch, bolshevik becca and boornie who do Nothing for Vermont or America?

    • Because they think it makes them one of the “cool kids” who elect the socialist saviors who are “for the people.” In other words, they are ignorant, emotionally underdeveloped, and uninformed.

  17. Well, you voted this clown in, and you will again, he’s just one of Vermont’s three stooges we have in DC,….. how pathetic

Puppet Pete is just looking out for his party, a power-hungry party that’s desperate.

  18. BLACKMAIL, BRIBERY,AND EMBEZZLEMENT, ARE A DIRTY BUSINESS. Only 26 comments, now 27.

  19. Perhaps Welch should propose term limits on CONGRESS . . . which is something a large majority of Americans support. How about it Peter?

  20. Welch is a Massachusetts born, Berkley of California trained, ambulance chaser. And a flat land grifter who wormed his way into Vermont. He didn’t think of this by himself; he’s not capable of that. Bernie the Barking Buffoon put him up to it…

    • Keep in mind too, that Peter Welch’s wife, Margaret Cheney, is one of Vermont’s three Public Utility Commissioners who determine our energy policies. Cheney, a former California journalist, Washington DC magazine editor, school board chair, and Spanish teacher, has all of the qualifications necessary for the PUC job – that being married to Welch.

And no, you can’t make this stuff up.

  21. Every *independent* incorporated township/municipal corporation should get 1 share of the United States corporation and the State. If there are States with non municipalities/incorporated land masses, they should count towards a single share of the United States corporation for their State. For local elections, each municipality should get a single vote for state and federal issues. This would prevent the majority ruling over the minority, a much needed check and balance, now that we don’t need a horse and buggy to send electors to represent an area.

Currently the majority rules over the minority, and that was not the intent of congress with the elector system. It’s fair to change the system, so long as it aligns with the original intent. To replace it with a popular vote would be a violent revolt against the existence of our constitutional republic of the minority protected from the majority.

  22. Hey Senator, creating a system to allow all the large metropolitan populations to choose our president doesn’t sound very constitutional to me. As to your proposal to create term limits for Supreme Court Justices, how about you and your colleagues pass term limits for the House and Senate, then maybe we can have a conversation about the Supreme Court. I’m ashamed that you purport to represent me as a US Senator!!! 😒

  23. To our good fortune, the Constitution protects us from tyrants like Welch. Note this tyrant is not proposing term limits for the real culprits in DC.

  24. His desire is to make VT a non event on the national stage on Par with Oklahoma City. It is approaching a non entity now. His actions would be the coup d gras.

  25. I’d like to see an end to an outdated Peter Welch as senator. He can live a long life in the private sector and live the hell he puts on all of us.

  26. Way overdue for term limit on these so-called Lawmakers! Two terms and you are out and maybe find a Real Job if you’re lucky 🤯 🤡

  27. No one will ever accuse Napoleon Ambulance Chaser for exceeding the limits of his naïveté ….

Senator Gaslighter might recall that the Constitutional Convention hasn’t been held for 200 years. Article 5 of the Constitution says 34 states can call for the Convention. Any recommendations of that convention would have to be individually ratified by 38 states.

    Good luck with that.

There again, Pete is endlessly attempting to justify his existence as our nation continues to be overrun by illegal economic immigrants …. as our veterans are living under bridges in cardboard boxes whilst our children are dying from fentanyl poisoning.
