Vermont State Police officers are investigating a suspicious shooting death of a 46-year-old Brandon man over the weekend.

The victim, Brian Bailey, was found unresponsive inside his home on Champearl Road shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday, state police said in a news release.

Bailey was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders, police said in the release.

Nobody is in custody as of Monday afternoon, more than 57 hours after the death was reported.

There was no word initially from Vermont State Police why they kept the suspicious death under wraps for more than two days.

By Monday night, Major Jeremy Hill, chief of the criminal division, said it appeared initially to be an untimely death when troopers responded and detectives were summoned.

As the investigation proceeded some information appeared to be conflicting and eventually an autopsy was ordered, Hill told Vermont News First.  The body was transported to Burlington for the examination.

State police had said in a news release on Monday afternoon that preliminary investigative work indicates it was an isolated event and there is no known threat to the community.

State Police gave no basis for those claims, which they make in many suspicious deaths.

Based on evidence at the scene and following the examination of Bailey’s body at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington, the death appears to be suspicious, police said.

State Troopers were called to the home on the dead-end road off Vermont 73 West and began the investigation Saturday.  Interviews have been conducted and evidence collected.

It is standard protocol for investigators to obtain a state search warrant so investigators and the crime scene search team can combed through the residence and remain there as long as needed.

Police have been at the scene for a few days and authorities said the investigation is active and ongoing.

Members of the Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit, the uniform and detective divisions and the Crime Scene Search Team are all part of the investigation.

Brandon Police, which has limited staffing currently, and the Rutland County State’s Attorney’s Office are assisting.

Investigators ask anyone with information to call Vermont State Police in Rutland at (802) 773-9101.
