It is an axiom of politics that “elections have consequences.” An apparent consequence of the Red Tide that rolled through the legislative elections in November is appointment of two Republican chairs and nine vice-chairs.

Jill Krowinski, the re-elected Speaker of the House, announced her 2025-26 committee assignments Wednesday afternoon, January 8. Republicans are now leaders on 11 of the 14 House committees.

Republicans now chair two House Committees. Mike Marcotte of Coventry returns for another session of chairing Commerce and Economic Development. And Matthew Walker of Swanton will lead House Transportation.

Republican vice-chairs include Jim Harrison of Chittenden/Mendon, Appropriations; James Gregoire of Fairfield, Institutions and Corrections; Chris Taylor of Milton, Education; Larry Labor, Morgan, Environment; Bartley of Georgia-Fairfax, General and Housing; Lisa Hango, Government Operations; Topper McFaun of Barre, Health Care; Burditt of West Rutland, Judiciary; Bill Canfield of Fair Haven, Ways & Means.

Democrat Reps. Alice Emmons (Corrections and Institutions), Peter Conlon (Education), Martin LaLonde (Judiciary), Therese Wood (Human Services), and Emilie Kornheiser (Brattleboro) are among the returning Democrat chairs.

Senate committee assignments are likely to be announced on the Senate floor this afternoon, Pro Tem Phil Baruth told VDC.

  1. Let the party begin and hope you all give up your free food card and show how to cut expenses by example.

    • It’s a UNIPARTY free-for-all… And it’s all covered by the taxpayers

  2. Congratulations Jim and others. At least there is someone in most committees that can attempt to supervise the proceedings. I hope they can use the position to leverage a few tax cutting stances.

  3. We need to keep vigilant eye upon the committees left that don’t have a GOP. Transportation and especially the new Commerce and Economic Development. Are there those willing to be watchdogs?
