The hills from whence our help came are now stricken by flooding

These Mennonite ladies and hundreds of other volunteers (including many from flood stricken-southern states) helped clean up Vermont in 2023 and 2024.

By Guy Page

When flooding hit Vermont in 2023 and 2024, people from Down South rushed north to offer aid.

Among them were a swift boat rescue team from North Carolina. As noted by Gov. Phil Scott last week, that team’s hometown has been hard hit by Hurricane Helene.

Also, Vermonters may remember the big yellow buses and hundreds of volunteers from Southen Baptist Disaster Relief. SBDR is one of the nation’s Big Three disaster relief organizations, along with the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. In Barre and Montpelier they delivered water, mucked out garages, counseled, and basically did whatever it took. They didn’t ask for any money, they just lent a hand – for weeks.

So did the Samaritan’s Purse (founded and operated by Billy Graham’s son Franklin) and the Billy Graham Association. One of the centers of the Billy Graham ministry is located just outside Asheville, North Carolina. The retreat center called The Cove is closed indefinitely.

And who can forget those joyfully singing ladies mucking out basements in Barre? Some were from Broadway, VA which thankfully is out of Virginia’s hurricane-struck region. But churches there are mobilizing to help flood-ravaged southern Virginia.

Many Vermonters have been asking how our churches and other interested people and organizations can help with the Hurricane Helene Relief effort. Here is one tangible way.

According to Vermont Regional Coordinate of Russell Rathier of Baptist Care of New England (rrathier@bcne.net), you can send cash offerings and 100% will go to assist the victims, no overhead costs with Disaster Relief. Send Donations by check to Capstone Baptist Church at PO Box 459, North Bennington, VT and write “DR support for Hurricane Helene” in the memo.

Also, Ed Lucas is BCNE New England Disaster Relief director and a member of Capstone Church.  He is also setting up a Vermont Mission Team to go help out in November. Interested parties should contact him at e.lucas@nebcvt.org.

  1. All great ideas . Also, another great idea is to donate money to Salvation Army
100% of donationsgoes to wherever needed and is tax deductible

  2. Thank You for this info. Please clarify. Donations are to be dropped off by Sat. the 12th at what location? North Bennington? Where exactly? Does anyone know of any similar drives in other areas of Vermont?

  3. I have been following the disaster on the web and I agree that our fellow citizens need help. however much of what is on the list is already there in ample supply. What I don’t see on the list is WARM WINTER JACKETS/COATS etc. NC and Tenn, may be “South” to us, but it’s going to get quite cold soon in ‘them thar hills” which make most of Vermont’s mountains look like foothills in comparison. I have sent emails to both the Governor’s office AND the Salvation Army about this and have yet to hear back……I know many Vermonters, us included, have new or almost new winter clothing in our closets that no longer fit, or get use. Vt. should set up some drop-off points around the state where we can deliver these articles and then co-ordinate a central location from which it can be combined and loaded on tractor trailers for delivery. My two cents, FWIW.

    • Re: “Vt. should set up some drop-off points around the state where we can deliver these articles…”

Great idea. I have ‘articles’ I would love to donate if only I could be sure of the end result. Governor’s office and Vt. Salvation Army. What do you say?

  4. We should follow these ladies, they are clearly glowing with the Holy Spirit, living by the direction and wisdom imparted by his indwelling.

Look at their faces, have you ever seen such a happy group of women?

This is the only way for Vermont to get out of its current situation. This is truly the only way to make ourselves, our family, our country and world a better place, there really are no substitutes or better answers.

The Holy Spirit is perhaps the strongest, change anyone could ever experience, it’s results are intangible, there is much talk about revolution from all sides of the political, world, but the true answer is revival.

Revival, there are not enemies, there are no down sides, there is massive transformation, it is part of us giving up control, thinking we are in control, willing to be humble and not filled with pride, it’s part of complete submission to the Spirit.

The governments of the world are fully aware of this at some levels, which is why following Jesus Christ is the religion that doesn’t fit into politics. It doesn’t by its design, it’s not of the world. Romans couldn’t control it so they took it over with the Roman Catholic Church. Europeans couldn’t control the spirit within the corrupt governments of the world, and the Anglican church. The Holy Spirit was flourishing at times in America.

Some would argue this is the true reason why our country prospered, we were living closest to the truth and love. The results of countries taking a different route at about the same time can be seen from space and in some midwestern town with their new immigrants.

Haiti, first free black nation, took upon and still practice a blend of Catholicism and voodoo. Many prominent black leaders in America, Richard Allen in particular sent men and families to investigate and possibly migrate to Haite as freedom wasn’t happening as fast as they liked. They chose to come back to America, and what a wise choice they made.

They could see the foundations of the country were not solid, perhaps too worldly, and their wisdom is evident in their choice, look at what has happened with 200+ years of going in the wrong direction for Haiti. We should not follow Haiti’s’ footsteps.

  5. Please don’t forget brothers/sisters in Virginia, Tennesse, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida (who is facing round house punch #2) – many are without power still after 7+ days, loss of goods, no services, and are being mostly ignored. Report out of Virigina, the Blue Ridge Parkway is closed indefinately. Most needed by all – even if you cannot help – prayers!
