NEWPORT — Newport Downtown Development has received a $112,000 state grant to create a network of mobile vendor carts along Main Street.
The funds will support construction of custom vending carts and finance a marketing campaign targeting cross-border shoppers, aiming to enhance the downtown shopping experience near Lake Memphremagog.
The project is one of 16 funded through Governor Phil Scott’s Transformational Tourism, Events, and Regional Marketing Grant Program, designed to attract out-of-state visitors and increase overnight stays.
“Tourism is an important part of our economy, and our small businesses, restaurants and shops all benefit from the revenue brought in by visitors coming to Vermont,” Scott said.
The project will provide vendors with mobile carts, secure storage in the Tasting Center, and city permits. Participants must commit to operating three times weekly during evenings and weekends. Vendors will also receive free promotion and marketing from NDD.
The program offers free usage for the first month, followed by $50 monthly rentals through April 2025.
“These grants are funding projects that will help revitalize communities across the state,” Scott added.

“When government– in pursuit of good intentions tries to rearrange the economy, legislate morality, or help special interests, the costs come in inefficiency, lack of motivation, and loss of freedom.” – Milton Friedman
Do these vender carts pay property taxes????? More public private partners and who takes the lose if this does not work?????
More Marxist ideas that taxpayers get stuck with. These grants are a waste of money. No wonder this state is broke and will not stop wasting tax dollars.
Need any more proof that Scott’s spent too much time driving in circles? Will he also shut down the “handcart brigades”, make them wear masks, or have a “snitch line” to report the “non-compliant” at the next outbreak of a Woo-Hoo Flu w/a confirmed fatality rate lower than the common cold? Newport would have the snack/coffee/hot chocolate business IF the current establishments didn’t roll up the sidewalks at 6 PM maybe? There’s an empty lakefront parking lot that could accommodate a small diner by using a mere 4 spaces with a spectacular view but THAT would just make WAY too much sense (and taxable revenue).
Newport voted in commies, you get commie money to give to certain people to be bakers and shoemakers. Street vendoring… it explains the difficulty in opening an actual store, doesn’t it? I mean, isn’t that what the silly farmer’s market is already, just around the block? A few veg sellers and a bunch of dragon’s blood soap makers.
But yeah, I know the little cabal in cahoots with the new team at city council. Progtard little marketers types with their crooked (literally, b/c they’re old hags) fingers in the grant cookie jars. Performance artistes wailing away about the need for more migrants while they charge $200/night for one bedroom in their AirBnB’s.
