A 69-year-old Concord man was killed Friday afternoon in a two-motorcycle crash near the P & H Truck Stop on Route 302 in Newbury, Vermont State Police reported.
Troopers said the crash occurred around 3:25 p.m. when a 2020 Harley Davidson Tri Glide Ultra operated by Tracy Mart collided with the rear of a 2020 Indian Roadmaster operated by Steven Staniszewski, 72, of Stevensville, Maryland.
According to investigators, Staniszewski had slowed eastbound on Route 302 to allow a truck to turn into the P & H Truck Stop when Mart, also traveling eastbound, struck the rear of his motorcycle.
Mart was ejected and found unresponsive at the scene. Despite CPR and emergency medical efforts, he was pronounced dead. His motorcycle suffered extensive front-end damage.
Staniszewski was not injured, though his motorcycle sustained rear and left-side damage. The crash remains under investigation.
Fatal rollover in South Burlington
A 33-year-old Barre man died early Saturday in a single-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 89 southbound near mile marker 86.7 in South Burlington.
Vermont State Police said troopers were called to the scene at about 6:12 a.m. and found the vehicle overturned in the median. The operator and sole occupant, identified as Joseph Taplin, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined the vehicle had left the roadway, rolled over, and came to rest on its roof. South Burlington firefighters assisted troopers at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation, and police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Trooper Quealy of the Williston barracks.
Lowell man arrested after nearly striking Massachusetts trooper
A Lowell man was arrested Friday after nearly hitting a Massachusetts state trooper and then fleeing into Vermont, authorities said.
According to Vermont State Police, the incident began around 4:12 p.m. when Massachusetts State Police reported that a vehicle had almost struck a trooper during a traffic stop attempt on Interstate 91 in Shelburne, Massachusetts. The driver continued north into Vermont.
The vehicle was later found abandoned at a Rockingham gas station, and troopers located the driver, David A. McAllister, 65, walking along U.S. Route 5 in Bellows Falls.
McAllister was arrested on multiple charges, including DUI, violation of conditions of release, driving with a criminally suspended license, and providing false information to law enforcement. He was processed at the Westminster barracks and cited to appear Monday, Sept. 15, in Vermont Superior Court, Windham Criminal Division.
Driver cited for 109 mph on I-91
Vermont State Police say a New Hampshire man was clocked at more than 100 mph on Interstate 91 Friday afternoon.
At about 3:06 p.m., troopers observed a vehicle traveling 85 mph in a 65-mph zone before accelerating to 109 mph as they followed.
A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as Michel Lurie, 65, of Bethlehem, N.H. He was taken into custody and processed at the state police barracks.
Lurie was cited for the offense and released. He also received a traffic ticket carrying a waiver fee of $655.
Groton man arrested for dui-drugs, fugitive warrant
A 41-year-old man was arrested Sunday afternoon in Groton after police say he was found nodding off behind the wheel under the influence of drugs.
Troopers from the St. Johnsbury barracks responded to the report at about 3:43 p.m. and identified the driver as Michael Hoehl, who initially gave police a false name in an attempt to implicate another person.
Police determined Hoehl was impaired by drugs and took him into custody. Further investigation revealed he had an active extraditable warrant from New Hampshire for possession of crack cocaine.
Hoehl, listed as homeless with ties to Groton, was held on $5,000 bail at Northeast Correctional Complex.
