Residents on Elm Street were treated to a surprise visitor late Thursday night — a young moose spotted wandering through the neighborhood.

Montpelier police responded to reports around midnight and located the animal ambling along the roadside. While the photos taken by officers were too blurry for a clear ID, authorities say there was no mistaking the animal’s size and distinctive silhouette.

“We don’t see them in town often, but it’s not unheard of,” Montpelier Police Chief Eric Nordenson said. “We want folks to enjoy the moment, but also remember that moose are wild animals and can be unpredictable—especially if they feel cornered or threatened.”

The department is working with the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department to monitor for any additional sightings. In the meantime, officials are urging the public to use caution and common sense if they encounter a moose:

Keep your distance

Do not approach or feed the animal

Watch for wildlife while driving, especially after dark

Call Montpelier Police if the moose appears distressed or is causing a hazard

Moose sightings are more typical in rural areas, but young animals occasionally wander into towns during summer months in search of food or after becoming separated from their usual range. Elm Street is located adjacent to forested Hubbard Park.

No injuries or damage were reported in the incident.
