A Hartford, VT man has been cited on charges that he threw nails and screws into the road in Bradford, including under a local police car, Bradford police say.
Just before 9 AM, Bradford Police were waived down by staff from the Wells River Savings Bank on Main Street in Bradford after they observed a man throwing nails into the road.
Police had passed that same man walking on the sidewalk moments earlier. Police soon located the man a short distance away as he entered the driveway to the Bradford Town Office. Police observed James Denman, 54, throwing screws and nails onto the roadway and under a parked Bradford Police cruiser.
He was immediately taken into custody. During a search, a large bag of screws and roofing nails were located and seized. Denman was processed at the Vermont State Police-Bradford Outpost and then transported to the VA Hospital in White River Junction for assistance. He was issued a citation to appear in Orange County Court on December 18 to answer the charges of Disorderly Conduct, Reckless Endangerment, and Attempted Unlawful Mischief.
Police and AOT subsequently located hundreds of nails and screws in the roadway and parking areas from the area of the Bradford Town Office, south to the area of the Dollar General Store on Carson Lane in Bradford.
While attempts were made to remove as many of the hazards from the roadway as possible, it is likely that more remain, police say. This is particularly true for the parking areas on Main Street adjacent to the northbound lane of travel between Barton Street and KD Welch Service Road.
Anyone who may have traveled through this area, or been parked at these locations, and has discovered damage to vehicle tires as a result should contact Bradford Police Sgt. Shaffer at DShaffer@Bradford-VT.US to report the damage.
