BRATTLEBORO — Details are limited in a serious shooting of a man found wounded at a drop-in center and overnight shelter over the weekend in Brattleboro.

Brattleboro Police said they responded to Groundworks Collaborative at 54 South Main Street about 9:45 Saturday night for an aggravated assault with a firearm complaint.

A man was found with a gunshot to the abdomen and appeared to be conscious and alert, Detective Lt. Greg Eaton said.  The victim was taken by EMS to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital for treatment, he said in a news release.

Police did not identify the victim and his condition was unavailable from the hospital without a name.

Eaton wrote police believe there was no ongoing threat to the general public, but no arrest has been made and the shooter remains on the loose in the community.

The shooting appears to be considered an isolated incident, Eaton said.

The Brattleboro Reformer reported Sunday afternoon that a Groundworks official said she understood the shooting happened elsewhere and the person walked to the center where emergency services were summoned.

Groundworks operates a drop-in center and overnight shelter at the location, according to its website.

The roadway between Groundworks and Lawrence Street was closed for about 2 hours while police investigated.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Eaton at (802) 257-7950 or the Brattleboro Police tip line at (802) 251-8188.

  1. Shot in the abdomen and decided to maybe “walk it off,” head to some random location? Uh huh.

Groundworks AGAIN. Remember Maavish-Jammeh? What lured “them” to VT?

Who is married to the Executive Director? Look in the VT Senate. Just one?

Who was a caseworker there? Look in the VT House. 5×25.

    Something stinks to high Heaven.

  2. JUST ANOTHER DAY IN THE VERMONT ZOO. Now, is the gut shot a new form of trauma????

  3. …Advocates for the homeless are asking the public to not make any inferences or draw any associations between shelter facilities and violent incidents. We should believe that a shooting could just have likely occurred at a church or synagogue or at the Home Depot. And please no similar inferences regarding the disproportionate level of crime in Brattleboro or anywhere else close to the usual suspect Massachusetts mill towns.
