BURLINGTON — A federal grand jury has indicted a Rhode Island man on charges of assaulting U.S. Border Patrol agents with a machine gun in Vermont last summer.

Brenden Sackal, 32, of Rockville, Rhode Island, was charged Thursday in a superseding indictment with assaulting federal officers with a deadly weapon, possessing and discharging a machine gun in furtherance of the assault, and weapons violations under the National Firearms Act.

The charges stem from a July 14, 2024, incident in which Sackal allegedly fired a privately manufactured 5.56 caliber AR-type pistol at five Border Patrol agents. Federal prosecutors say the weapon functioned as a machine gun but was not registered and lacked a required serial number under federal law.

Sackal faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years and up to life imprisonment if convicted on all counts. His federal arraignment date has not been set.

Acting U.S. Attorney Michael P. Drescher said the case demonstrates the government’s commitment to prosecuting attacks on federal law enforcement.

“Anyone who discharges a firearm at a federal law enforcement officer will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Drescher said in a statement. He praised the response by Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, Vermont State Police and Orleans County Sheriff’s Department personnel who pursued and arrested Sackal on the day of the shooting.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Vermont State Police.

Sackal also faces related charges in Caledonia Superior Court.

  1. Another good reason to pack heat. Seems RI, MA, CT, NY is dumping their prison inhabits to VT.

  2. So this guy walked through paper laws that state “Sackal allegedly fired a privately manufactured 5.56 caliber AR-type pistol at five Border Patrol agents. Federal prosecutors say the weapon functioned as a machine gun but was not registered and lacked a required serial number under federal law.” Yup, that law worked perfectly ! How about if before these laws are put in place, those charged with writing said paper laws also throughly soak them in water. That aught to get the attention of the criminals that walk through them !

  3. This douche is the perfect poster child for the enforcement and prosecution of sensible, EXISTING gun restrictions and the laws protecting law enforcement personnel. He needs to rot in club fed for a good long time to contemplate his life choices and to protect the public.

  4. People like this and there are many in VT (and elsewhere) who migrated to VT because it’s an “easy” state to commit crime. These are not of the human species but are like a wolf in a sheep’s hide. There’s no connection to the real rational world and function on impulses. Odds are high that they cannot be mentally indoctrinated / transformed into something they look like. The liberal element in the legal and political atmosphere of society has not embraced this scenario and feel sorry for these “Things” and allow the “Things” to be amongst us and violate our lives wherein they need to be dealt with so they don’t harm the innocent, physically or financial. Until reality gets balanced in (VT) society, there will be turmoil. Those that walk on Earth human or animal have rogue divisions and should be understood and divided, not incorporated into. That’s why I mention to pack heat, for self preservation and others also. It worked in the past and should now. Lawyers, DA”s, Prosecutors should be on the side of justice and not protect the “Things”, but protect the public. Reading articles such as in VDC,, the VT AG needs mental realignment. Those previous AG’s also acted the same as the current. I’m sick reading about a victim of a crime who neutralizes a “Thing” gets into legal trouble and incarcerated. Guns are not the problem, “Things” are. Politicians have passed laws taking away our Constitutional rights per the Second Amendment and Vermont’s Constitution.
