A 38-year-old Newport Town man has been charged with domestic terrorism following an incident in the City of Newport.
According to the Vermont State Police, troopers on Feb. 19 at approximately 3:44 p.m. became aware of a man identified as Joseph Millett who had allegedly made homicidal and suicidal threats to the Veterans Crisis Line.
Police said troopers quickly made phone contact with Millett and determined he was in Newport City. Millett agreed to report to the Vermont State Police Derby Barracks. Upon his arrival, troopers disarmed him without incident and took him into protective custody based on the threats reportedly made toward the general public.
Authorities said that after being taken into custody, Millett allegedly continued making statements similar in nature to those reported by the crisis line, including references to a potential mass casualty event.
Millett remains in protective custody. On Feb. 23, he was flash cited to appear at 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 24 in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in Newport to answer to a charge of domestic terrorism.
No injuries were reported. Additional details were not immediately available. The affidavit of probable cause is expected to be filed with the court clerk’s office following Millett’s arraignment.
Vermont’s 2023 domestic terrorism laws carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and/or a $50,000 fine.
