Wesley MacIntyre, a Vermont State University – Lyndon junior, is leading the nation in scoring, according to a January 28 Caledonian-Record news report by reporter Kevin Doyon.
The 5′ 11″, 150 lb. Troy, New York native joined the Hornets as a sophomore and, now in his second season with the program, has emerged as one of the most prolific scorers in the country. The 20-year-old junior and criminal justice major is averaging 26.9 points per game, leading all of Division III, a result of a journey that nearly derailed his college career, Doyon reports.
McIntyre’s first stop after high school was Elms College in Massachusetts, where he arrived expecting to play immediately after being recruited. Instead, he was one of roughly 30 hopefuls competing for roster spots. “It was not what I expected at all,” McIntyre said, recalling being told he should redshirt and serve as a practice player. He opted to transfer after one semester.
That move led him to Wells College in Aurora, New York, where his role was beginning to grow before the school abruptly announced it would close. “They told us with about two weeks left of school, with no prior heads up,” McIntyre said. The news sent him searching once again for a program — a search that quickly led to Lyndon.
VTSU-Lyndon coach David Pasiak, familiar with McIntyre through high school and contacts at Wells, offered him the opportunity he had been looking for. McIntyre committed, rewarding that early faith with historic scoring performances, including back-to-back 30-point games against VTSU-Johnson and Lesley University that have further cemented his place atop the national scoring leaderboard.
