To the Editor:
It is troubling to read American Cardinals think the Iran conflict lacks cause. Iran was close to acquiring a nuclear weapon within weeks which would put the region and the United States in grave danger. Iran is also developing a long-range missile that could reach us. They have continuously indicated their objective is death to the United States and Israel. This is a threat we should take seriously because of the terrorist aggression history of this Mullah regime.
The Cardinals further state the conflict is immoral and incompatible with Church teaching. Well, waiting for the development of nuclear weapons is irresponsible and what the Cardinals and even the Pope are ignoring is the loss of 30,000+ innocent protestors gunned down while they were protesting the Mullahs a few weeks ago. Some of these innocent people were in the hospital on gurneys awaiting medical treatment only to be shot in the head by the Mullahs Revolutionary Guard because they protested the regime. This action of murdering protestors is immoral, not our effort to defend innocent life with force.
I think it’s important for the church to take positions on critical issues but I think the Iran conflict opposition is short sighted as is the church’s position protecting illegal immigrants who are not following the legal process for residency.
