To the Editor,

Thank you for your recent coverage of Consul General Chen Li’s visit to Vermont, which aimed to strengthen the friendship and foster exchanges between China and Vermont. We also appreciate the thoughtful comments from your readers. In the spirit of constructive dialogue and mutual understanding, we would like to offer a few responses.

The primary role of the Chinese Consulate General in New York is to promote communication and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation within our consular district, which includes ten states: New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine, and Rhode Island. We are committed to engaging with communities across the region and supporting people-to-people exchanges that contribute to the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations.

China continues to prioritize environmental protection and the transition to a green economy. In 2024 alone, China has completed over 6.6 million hectares of land greening tasks—figures that rank among the highest in the world, according to China’s Ministry of Natural Resources. A recent New York Times report also highlights China’s investments in clean energy and its push to become a global leader in renewable power.

On economic ties, China has long believed that mutual benefit and win-win cooperation are at the heart of China-U.S. trade. From 2001 to 2024, U.S. goods exports to China grew by 648.4%, from $19.18 billion to $143.55 billion—far exceeding the 183.1% increase in overall U.S. global exports. The U.S. holds a $28.9 billion service trade surplus with China. Products like maple syrup and skiing gears from Vermont are popular in China. China welcomes more high-quality products and services from the U.S. to the Chinese market, and will continue to create a fair and sound business environment for international traders and enterprises. Trade disputes and tariffs serve no one’s interests. While differences between two major economies are natural, addressing them through dialogue and mutual respect remains the most effective path forward.

We look forward to more opportunities to engage with Vermonters and exchange perspectives. We warmly welcome you to visit China and see the country for yourself. Our Consulate stands ready to provide any support needed.

-Charlie Zhao, Press Office, Chinese Consulate General in New York

  1. In light of the present and past relations with China….. Don’t believe a word of this propaganda.

  2. We hope you will also take notes on Vermont’s already stellar air quality. We hear too much about air pollution issues in China. Let’s team to clean air quality.

  3. Climate change = cultural Marxism run by the nwo.

So, you will own nothing and be happy, like our people in China, now get back to work you lazy stupid Americans.

That’s what happens when you have a Marxist decoder ring, he didn’t come to buy maple syrup and ski equipment, that I can assure you.

Checking on his puppets, in his puppet paradise of New England is more accurate.

The fact that China is monitoring what is said on VDC should be a bit revealing in itself. More so since our own reps don’t even comment on it. Shows who is in control.

    • The hilarious part is that you are responding to this article using technology that was built or made in China or with materials that came from there. You should thank China! Or get rid of your stuff, which might be a better solution so we don’t have to read comments like these.

    • Nick, having worked in product development and sourcing, including travel to countries such as China, the issue is far more nuanced. “Thank China or get rid of your stuff” is very black/white thinking.

  4. According to Mao’s own words the Chinese only have one long term goal, domination. Green programs and Climate Change? China has worst record in the world on pollution which is whitewashed by not being counted due to their declared status by the UN and previous US Administrations as ‘Favored Nation’ status as a Third World Country! More like here to provide guidance in person for next moves by Democrat leaders.

  5. When will China begin reducing ITS carbon footprint, allegedly? 2060?

Nice job with the Governor, Lt Governor, and Secretary of State in May, 2019. Would you please re-print that article for us, since I can’t find it any longer on the Chinese Consulate’s website? Pretty please? In the name of constructive relations and open dialogue?

  6. China reached a 10 year high in the construction of new coal power plants in 2024.

    https://www.carbonbrief.org/chinas-construction-of-new-coal-power-plants-reached-10-year-high-in-2024/#:~:text=Construction%20started%20on%2094.5GW,potential%20cooling%20in%20project%20initiation%E2%80%9D.

Despite our need for more reasonably priced power no new power plants are beig built in VT of anykind and we are killing our economy while China continues to spew carbon into the air. The chinese consult could give ywo sh–ts about Vermonters don’t be a SUCKER!

  7. Confucius say…a nation shall be judged by how it treats its animals. Just kidding: he never said that, and I wish he had, because China has a major image problem regarding animal cruelty. They seem not at all concerned about this (although they do seem to have an interest in protecting “glamorous” high-profile animals, like the panda). For that reason alone, I would never do business with them. WARNING — GRAPHIC: https://legaljournal.princeton.edu/how-long-will-chinas-animal-cruelty-laws-have-to-wait/

  8. What? Green What? They pollute more than the US and Western Europe together. They have 1,732 coal plants and are building 17 more!

Yeah prioritize their energy need. So one has to wonder? Do they think man made climate change is BS? Or, do they rely on the US and Europe ruin their economies and survivablity meeting CO emission standards.

And China is not alone its India, Pakistan, and growing under-develop nations who are also ignoring man made climate change theory.

  9. “Chinese crime gangs are flooding rural America with drugs. Steve Robinson of the Maine Wire is one of the only journalists who’s noticed. A shocking story.”
Tucker Carlson interviews Steve Robinson on hundreds of illegal Chinese marijuana farms throughout ME.
Isn’t it likely these Chinese gangs would use the same playbook in VT?
