Leaking dog repellent triggers hazmat response

A hazardous materials response at the South Burlington Post Office on Friday afternoon was traced to a leaking can of dog repellent inside a U.S. Postal Service delivery truck, according to Vermont State Police.

The incident, initially reported as a suspicious package, prompted numerous emergency crews — including the Vermont State Police Bomb Squad — to respond to the White Street facility at about 12:50 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6. Authorities later determined the situation was not suspicious.

State police said a can of irritant spray either burst or began leaking inside the USPS vehicle, releasing an unknown liquid that caused irritation to the driver. The driver was treated at the scene and released after reporting moderate ill effects from exposure.

Fluid from the spray can dampened several packages inside the truck, which led to early concerns that a leaking parcel may have been responsible.

Agencies responding to the scene included the Vermont State Police Bomb Squad, the Vermont Hazardous Materials Response Team, the South Burlington Fire Department, and the South Burlington Police Department.

Crews began clearing the scene at about 2:30 p.m. No other injuries or ill effects were reported.
