The suspect in Thursday’s exploding Cyber Truck incident in Las Vegas had obtained an online degree at Vermont’s Norwich University. The deceased suspect, Matthew Livelsberger, age 37, attended the Northfield-based school before becoming a U.S. Army Green Beret. The school sent the following statement to VDC.

“Above all, our hearts go out to those impacted,” wrote Marc Kolb, the Director of Campus and Athletic Communications’ Marketing & Communications Office from the nation’s oldest military school.

He continued, “We do not have additional details about the incident at this time, and we have not been contacted by law enforcement. We can confirm that the person identified in media reports completed an online degree in 2019 in strategic studies and defense analysis.”

Who was Livelsberger?

Livelsberger resided in Colorado Springs and had reportedly rented the Tesla cybertruck truck. He has a military background that includes multiple tours in Afghanistan. The Associated Press reported on Livelsberger’s Vermont connection, as well as his military background.

“Three U.S. officials said Livelsberger was an active-duty Army member who spent time at the base formerly known as Fort Bragg, a massive Army base in North Carolina that is home to Army special forces command,” their report states. “The officials also spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose details of his service.”

His career brought him through the same military base as the suspect in the recent New Orleans truck/gun attack. The New York Post reports, “The terrorist behind the New Orleans massacre and the Special Forces soldier who detonated a Cybertruck full of explosives outside the Trump International Las Vegas hotel on Wednesday both served on the same North Carolina Army base, the Post has learned.”

On social media, folks have been taking note of the bomber’s time at Norwich.

Jessica Stephanie from Vermont wrote on X, “Cybertruck guy actually went to college up here in Vermont. 😳 According to a few articles read/viewed, they have said he went to Norwich. Very reputable military college. You can either go as a civilian or cadet however, very hard school to be accepted to.”

Douglas MacGregor from Ottowa wrote on X, “Norwich University isn’t just “a Vermont university”. It’s the oldest private military college in the United States. My brother went to Norwich University as a civilian and captained their championship soccer team. I have been there several times myself. It’s a fantastic institution with a proud history.”

What happened?

The driver of the vehicle, Livelsberger, was also the lone victim in what’s an apparent suicide attack. Several other bystanders were also seriously injured. It is being investigated as a potential act of terrorism.

NBC News reported, “A Tesla Cybertruck exploded and burst into flames Wednesday morning just outside the entrance of Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, killing a person inside the vehicle and injuring several others standing nearby, local officials said.”

The report states the truck stopped for about 15 seconds before the explosion. Police discovered gasoline canisters, camp fuel canisters, and fireworks in the back of the truck’s remains.

Norwich offers 50+ programs of study online. “Designed to accommodate your varied work schedules and lifestyles, our programs are delivered through NU Online, a virtual and highly interactive learning platform connecting Norwich’s exceptional faculty and curricula to students across the country and the world,” the Norwich website says.

  1. Sad to see our veterans losing their lives in these two instances of late. Las Vegas appears to be a suicide. If so it brings to mind the tragic epidemic of veteran suicide in our country. I wonder if this Green Beret with multiple overseas deployments might have been suffering from TBI . Of course there are other possibilities. But regardless our Vets deserve better, much better.

  2. NOTHING about this event makes any sense. How does a highly-experienced, active-duty SF soldier, seemingly-patriotic, Trump-supporting individual do this?? I think there is something amiss here; it’s not as it first appears.

  3. I really have absolutely no idea what really happened or why in this case. And I concur with Frank Hassler that the level of trauma our veterans have experienced is horrific, and the epidemic of suicide among them utterly tragic and inexcusable.

However, I am reminded immediately that Lee Harvey Oswald was totally set up as a fall guy by the deep state, and that there is incontrovertible evidence that it was actually deep state snipers who murdered JFK.

Why would we ever put anything past the deep state after what they did to JFK and who knows how many others? After the insane level of evil to which they sunk trying to remove Donald Trump from office, and then to try to keep him from getting back in?

    • Martin…regarding LH Oswald, did you know that Stowe VT lawyer John McVicker (RIP) was the Consular Officer at the US Embassy, in Moscow, that signed off on LHO to return to the states?

Oswald went to another Consular officer first, who I know, and is still alive,in his 90’s, and refused to sign off for Oswald’s return to the states.

McVicker was his boss, and over road his denial, Oswald returned home, and the rest is history.

Years later McVicker, Maj General Mike Jacobs ,ret, who taught at St. Michaels, John McClaughry and I founded the VT chapter of Reagans grass roots lobby ,Citizens for America.

The American First Group in DC was set up using CFA as a template ,but with the new technologies added, at my urging, during Trumps first term.

Just an interesting tidbit of Vermont History.

  4. This is what happens when our military is used for “social experimentation” allowing woke anti-Americanisms into the ranks and not installing patriotic American values and an officer class that has the backs of the troops while they are serving and politicians that should have their backs after they have served. Any vet that has had to deal with the VA to get some services from them knows what I’m talking about. I have kicked the VA to the curb they couldn’t even get me a pair of diabetic shoes I am entitled to. Some vets have nowhere but to the VA.

  5. Let us be clear. This man earned an online degree from Norwich University’s College of Graduate and Continuing Studies. He was not an undergraduate student, not a cadet or civilian resident or commuting B.A. student. He paid to take courses leading to a degree in an online program, conducted completely virtually except for a few late-summer or midwinter days on campus when graduation ceremonies are held. These are accredited and reputable programs. They are NOT the same as the courses of study taken at the University by college-aged students. To say that he is a graduate of Norwich University, as if he spent four or five years on campus being part of a dedicated, energetic, and, yes, mostly very patriotic resident student body, is both inaccurate and irresponsible. It is as irresponsible as the claim by some ignorant folks back in the 70s and 80s that the (former) summer Russian School at NU (an intensive, immersive Russian language-learning experience, taught by native speakers and scholars) was a CIA front. It wasn’t, in case you were wondering. (That program now exists at Middlebury College.) Norwich is the oldest private military college in the USA, founded in 1819. It is the birthplace of ROTC. Since the 1970s it has admitted women and “civilian” students, the latter being those students who do not belong to the Corps of Cadets, who live under a military regimen but are not part of any U.S. armed service branch, though about half of those who graduate do go on to active service as commissioned officers. Some of the remaining half go into the reserves, and a smaller number do not go into the military at all. The university is private and not part of the U.S. military academies. Hence, it can and does offer other modes of instruction, such as th online programs aimed at helping working adults achieve their degree goals. But its major focus is on the teaching of people of traditional college age, mostly living on campus and doing the stuff college students do: study and try to earn good grades, play sports, listen to music, order pizza, form friendships and relationships, and go on to adult life. This man was already living that adult life. Norwich did not help to form him, sadly. If it had, he would never have done this terrible thing. Full disclosure: I taught at Norwich for 35 years. I think I can claim some knowledge of the school and its students.

  6. Both attackers served at Fort Bragg at same time. Both chose same day to attack. Coincidence?
