LaMarche: Haley’s missed opportunity

As you may have seen, Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley is being thrown through the media wringer.

Wednesday, at a town hall in Berlin, New Hampshire, Haley was asked by a member of the audience “What was the cause the Civil War?”

“I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run — the freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do,” Haley responded.

For the past several hours, media headlines have rung out, criticizing Haley. “Nikki Haley makes no mention of slavery” read one from NBC News.

I have a couple quick thoughts.

Firstly, Haley’s response was pathetic.

Not because she didn’t say the word “slavery”, but because she dropped the ball on a perfect opportunity to inject some energy into the NH Republican base.

As a former Republican, I know the talking points well. And the “party of Lincoln” bit would have worked well for Haley here.

Founded in 1854, the Republican Party sought to combat the expansion and practice of slavery. It was Lincoln, of course, who signed the emancipation proclamation.

For decades, the Republican Party fought for American liberties. In that time, the Republicans, without a doubt, stood for freedom. Whereas the Democrats stood to defend the practice of slavery.

Furthermore, it was South Democrats who, after the abolition of slavery, continued discrimination via Jim Crow legislation.

So when people want to rattle on about the cause of the Civil War let’s remember who, in fact, sought to end it and ensure the well-being of liberty for all.

At least, that is what I would have advised Haley to say. She missed a major opportunity to knock the wind out of potential negative headlines. Rather, she could have strengthened her relationship with Republicans and the Party.

Secondly, who gives a flying flamingo?

The media response to this controversy is outrageous. And reminds me, eerily, of the sensational 2016 coverage of a certain former president. The incessant coverage, chewing every loose scrap, all while leaving that guy in the White House unchecked.

Haley wasn’t even necessarily wrong. You’ll often hear Southerners claim the Civil War was an issue of state’s rights. They aren’t wrong. They are just lacking a bit of detail: state’s rights over slavery.

Instead of toppling over themselves because a woman didn’t say what they wanted her to, leftist talking heads and the media ought to focus on Haley’s economic plans, or foreign policy in the midst of so much conflict.

As a leftist, I’m here to tell you I don’t give a toss. And neither should you.

  1. In reading your commentaries you give little indication that you are a modern leftist. You write like a classical liberal as in a founding fathers classical liberal. The questions I have for Haley reiare directly to her convictions in upholding her oath to the constitution, defending our borders and sovereignty and stopping the endless wars. I know the answers already and she won’t be getting my vote.

  2. Yes state’s rights…..slavery but also secession. Haley is an establishment politician with zero plans to illuminate corruption….that’s why lefties are promoting her. Would i vote for her over biden?…yes. Would i vote for her in a primary?….NEVER!

  3. personal criticism/// do not question another person///go along with the mob///every body will like you///

    • It is very OK to question the POV, claims, logic, wisdom and position of another commenter, MDay. What’s not okay is to call another individual commenter a boob or a loon. That’s not discussion, it’s just an attack, and it generally interferes with discussion.

  4. Haley is just another bought and paid-for politician, who talks a good game but will just be another elite in DC, and we already have enough…… follow the money !!

  5. Actually, Haley’s answer was an incoherent babble akin to what comes out of Kamala Harris. Even when she’s following her own script, she sounds like that: someone who’s rather dim trying to sound smart by speaking as if her audience are the dim ones. As for Haley’s economic plans and foreign policy, that pro-war anti-worker platform is exactly what the press does not want to publicize as they promote her.

  6. On first thoughts, it may have seemed that Haley had a true Kamala moment. The question asked: “what was the cause of the civil war?” The obvious answer about the CAUSE was the threat of secession….and the cause of the threatened secession was the disagreement about slavery. When you parse her comments about “the role of government”, she was spot on. There was a legal disagreement between states as to whether a person could have sovereign domain over another human and whether government should protect that right. We already had a Supreme Court decision that established that a non-free person constituted 3/5 of a human. Have we ever officially determined the value of an unborn human? We currently have a “cold civil war” going on over the issue of abortion. In some states (including Vermont), a pregnant person has legal authority to pay another human to kill her unborn “person” up until the time of birth. In some states, that practice is heavily regulated or essentially prohibited. Although there is not a distinct line on a map between those states, that is a serious dichotomy, not unlike the slavery issue of whether a physical characteristic of a human being can render them subject to sovereign domain by another. The issue of abortion “rights” has and is dividing this nation and Haley is the only voice of moderation running as a Republican. She may not be end up being the Republican nominee but because of her more moderate views on abortion, she would be the obvious choice for a running mate, if we are to rid the Executive Branch of democrat tyranny in the next election. She does need to be better prepared for the next gotcha question from a slimy liberal reporter.

  7. do not remember using the words boob or loon// you can tell when your are over the target /// when the five no trespass signs appear//

  8. What people say about others is a reflection of themselves. People should be free to expose whom they are and speak freely.

If the public could comment or rate what is said and by whom, perhaps then people could discern more easily what is wheat and what is chaff.

As it is now, the internet gives that same power to someone lacking any wisdom or insight, and many times only lets their opinions across the state (propaganda) and thereby we have no change in our state.

Our press is often used to divide rather than heal and build. We need to change.

  9. In this case, Haley the chosen one, and at the same time is torn down before all the democrats, such that each person stays in their state defined box of Democrat or Republican. This is how the uniparty stays in control and ruins our nation. This is how they divide us.

They are choosing our leaders for us. Vermonters should know this game by know, it’s been going on live here for 30+ years….. oh, I’d vote for Haley over Biden. Marxist light vs. Marxist. Vermont- I’d vote for Scott over Miro, marxist light vs. marxist.

The results are the same, the Marxist beer they serve is no good, we need a new beverage to drink, this one is warm, moldy and nasty.

Please we need a more satisfying drink.
