House members count ballots for Speaker of the House election today

By Guy Page

Following a secret ballot, the Vermont House of Representatives today, January 8 re-elected Speaker of the House incumbent Jill Krowinski by a 111-35 vote.

The vote ended the challenge of Rep. Laura Sibilia (I-Dover), who announced after the general election she would seek the Speaker’s gavel.

Krowinski

Krowinski received support from at least two members of the 56-member GOP House caucus: Reps. Ashley Bartley (Georgia-Fairfax) and Tom Burditt (West Rutland). Others rising in support of the incumbent included Dems. Theresa Wood (Waterbury), Kristi Woods of Springfield, Martin Lalonde of South Burlington, and recently re-elected Charlie Kimbell of Woodstock.

The all-in Republican vote Sibilia wished for failed to materialize. Neither were any Republicans put forth as Speaker candidates.

House members rising in support of Sibilia included Independent Jed Lipsky of Stowe, Democrat Elizabeth Burroughs of Westminster, Progressive/Dem Troy Headrick of Burlington, and Republican Mark Higley of Lowell.

Wood, a committee chair who shepherded the constitutional amendment enshrining abortion rights through House Human Services, referenced the strong advocacy by Krowinski – former Planned Parenthood lobbyist and vice-president – for the amendment. Woods noted the amendment was ratified on Election Day, 2022 “by every single town in Vermont – the towns that we all represent.’

LaLonde and Kimbell both praised Krowinski’s  “even temperament.” LaLonde, an attorney, places strong emphasis on the words in his floor remarks. Neither denigrated Sibilia’s temperament, but listeners were apparently free to draw their own conclusions.

Independent Anne Donahue of Northfield – on record supporting Sibilia – reminded her colleagues that the secret ballot protects all voters (including House members) from the consequences of retaliation.

  1. Kueen Krowinski Kriminals still running the Vermont clown show. Let the party begin. Waiting for the grand performance of the new elected gang now in the statehouse. Hope they all do not get fat using their free meal card.

  2. To be quite honest I viewed this as a heads we lose, tails we lose situation anyways. They are both loony lefties .

  3. As a traveller I hear people talk and sneer about Vermont. They think is a laughing stock
but they don’t really laugh they think Vermont is disgraceful. They feel bad for the people that actually are Vermonters that care .How many are left ?

  4. Guy, I’m submitting a correction; Elizabeth Burroughs represents Windsor 1 and is one of my reps.

  5. Not a promising start for the new legislators….voting to keep the same people running the show pretty much assures that there will be no real change, just more of the same, old same old with no relief for the tax payer. I had such hope. Silly me.

Tragically, our efforts to inform and educate the Vermont electorate regarding the deceptive and sinister nature of Prop 5/Article 22 were unsuccessful.

On the other hand, Planned Parenthood, and those responsible for the carefully-crafted vague word salad of Prop 5/Article 22, were extremely successful in hoodwinking Vermont voters.

    • They own the entire democratic party, they pay for their elections through the PAC, have to answer all their questions 100%.

They are a complete failure, according to their own questions. 50% of births in Vermont are unplanned, and have been that way for decades, so much for “planned parenthood”…..they really need a more accurate name change to reflect their true nature.

I am sure they orchestrated everything, EVERYTHING, these are not coincidences….

  7. Well, nothing will change, the same inept fools are running the show, so hold on to your wallets……………….. they think they can save to world !!!

  8. “It’s time to play the music

It’s time to raise the curtains on the Muppet Show tonight

Why do we always come here
    I guess we’ll never know
It’s like a kind of torture
To have to watch the show

To introduce our [guest star] PERPS
That’s what I am here to do
So it really makes me happy to introduce to you (higher taxes, less service)
    “Ladies and gentlemen OK go”

So now let’s get it started
Why don’t we get it started
It’s time to get things started
On the most sensational inspirational celebrational Muppetational
This is what we call the Muppet Show”
