Just one of 107 Clean Heat vetoers says they’ll vote yes on checkback

Estimates would add up to $1000 per oil tank fill-up

By Guy Page

Of the 107 House members who voted on May 11 to override Gov. Phil Scott’s veto of Act 18, the Affordable Heating Act, only one has so far responded to a Vermont Daily Chronicle poll affirming he would vote yes when the required ‘checkback’ for implementing the Clean Heat Standard comes up in the Legislature next year.

The survey was sent to all candidates for election, both incumbents and newcomers. Marc Mihaly, an East Calais Democrat, was the only incumbent to respond with a Yes vote. He explained: “Cost only applies to those who don’t take advantage of the incentives to install clean heat or weatherize.  That cost could be less than 20 cents per gallon, if that.”

Rep. Marc Mihaly

The other two yes votes were non-incumbent Democrats Anna Tadio of Rutland City and Bram Kleppner of Burlington.

Several days after Mihaly’s comment, a consultant hired by the Vermont Department of Public Service delivered a less optimistic analysis of the likely added costs per gallon to meet Vermont’s carbon emission goals: between $1.79 – and $4.03. The higher sum would add more than $1000 to every fill-up of a 250 gallon home heating oil tank.

It is unclear why so few members of the legislative supermajority who voted to override Gov. Scott’s veto also declined to respond to the poll. It is true that many legislators – regardless of how they voted on S.5, which became Act 18 – respond to few if any polls. With this in mind, VDC publishes the official ‘roll call’ vote of the veto override vote, as published in the official House and Senate journals.

But if you want a more straight forward answer I’d say a 20 cent max when prices are low and a 5 cent max when prices are high (with a graduated scale determined by current pricing relative to a rolling average).THOMAS.CHITTENDEN@GMAIL.COM

  1. Hey! Some of us don’t have the means to weatherize as you all wish. I do some but your taxes have depleted that fund

    • I replaced 4 front windows and a side door to the tune of about $12,000 dollars so I have nothing left to pay any extra stealing the demorats in Montpelier want to take. That was my contribution to weatherization. I think I will it up on my brother who lives in Maine for any taxes I may be required to pay. I live on a fixed income and think Montpelier is a pretty stinky town.

  2. I think this headline is misleading. It implies that 106 of the 107 will vote no. But if you look at the spreadsheet, almost all (106?) don’t answer the question, which story does touch on. The story here is that supporters of the Unaffordable Heat Act (AKA Democrats/Progressives) are hiding from the voters what their intentions are for when the rules vote comes up in January – after the election. Interpret that as you will, but I certainly have my theory. The other detail the story leaves out is Republican candidates, incumbents and otherwise, have overwhelmingly answered the survey and have pledged to vote NO.

  3. Thanks for the reporting! I’ll forward this. Please write and ask your representative what they support and where this tax money is going to go?
Will it expand fuel assistance? Will it help give poor Vermonters new furnace?
I tried to get help with weatherization from the state. When the worker came, inspected my basement told me they couldn’t do anything until I repaired the rotted floor joists. Shallow basement, part crawlspace. I didn’t even know there was a problem. Fixing that would be costly and put iff for a few years. I didn’t call them back. Definitely not in the position to take out a loan to get a new heat system.

    • Might be just as well you didn’t get help. I did, and they blew out two walls while blowing in the insulation in under pressure. Old houses have many weak points, some visible, some not. There’s no free lunch.

  4. Now, if you think this affordable heat act is bad, now comes more inflation with the half point drop in interest rates from the federal reserves greatest con man PICKPOCKETPOWELL. There is a life out side of this cave monkey state called Vermont and bad things are in play.

  5. I beg YOU, Supreme Being, creator of this wonderous universe, protect us from democrats before they destroy this self fixing playground you created.

  6. Re: “Marc Mihaly, an East Calais Democrat, was the only incumbent to respond with a Yes vote.”

    But of course.

Keep in mind the blatant conflict of interest here. Elena Mihaly, Vice President of the Conservation Law Foundation, and daughter of Rep. Marc Mihaly, is leading the charge by filing a notice of lawsuit against the VT Agency of Natural Resources for its failure to cut carbon pollution.

This is lawfare against Vermont citizens. Legislators have passed a law they know most Vermonters are financially incapable of obeying, automatically classifying them as criminals. This is despotism. Period.

  7. I assume most of these representatives ” Did Not Answer ” as elections are just around the corner, there is no need to rock the boat, as they think their constituents are dumb as rocks and will overlook this vote, but being they are DemocRATs, they’ll fire it back up after the election if need be…………………they don’t care !!

And you shouldn’t care, Vote them out……………………….

  8. The key word “affordable” remains an elusive, yet critical point that no one will definitively answer, by design. It’s a cute, nice sounding word they like to utilitze as an emotional, mind control, manipulation tool.

Now that the petro fiat dollar is headed for monopoly money status…no matter what they do or say now, the implosion fuse is lit and burning fast. The interest rate cut when the stock market at an all time high? Never done before – ever. Defying logic and denying the facts is how this Fed rate cut and US Treasury hoodwinking shenanigans brings the World War and Civil War to our front doors. Will it be stopped or averted? Doubt it. All debt instruments deployed. It is worthless certified vapor paper, meaningless empty digits, an illusion.

The hyper stagnation will hit with a vengence…those sitting under the Golden Thunder Dome will see it and feel it – no amount of paper will cover the ponzi-scheming fraud blowing up in their face at that point.
