Lt. Gov. John Rodgers greets well-wishers in the doorway of the House chamber Wednesday morning, following his election by the joint assembly.

The Vermont House and Senate today voted to elect John Rodgers (R-Glover) as lieutenant governor.  The Democrat-ruled General Assembly now must contend with a Republican governor and lieutenant governor.

Without a majority vote in the November 5 general election, the election of Vermont’s next lieutenant governor fell to the joint Legislature. In a special session vote this morning, they gave Rodgers 158 votes, incumbent David Zuckerman (D/P – Hinesburg) 18 votes, and Peace and Justice candidate Ian Diamondstone 0 votes.

In the general election, Rodgers received 171,854 votes, Zuckerman 155,876, Diamondstone 13K-and-change votes, and others a relative handful of votes.

Zuckerman was not in attendance. He informed VDC yesterday he was scheduled to begin a stint as co-host of Vermont Viewpoint, WDEV’s 9-11 AM public policy radio call-in show.

Minutes after his election, VDC caught up with Rodgers at the threshold of the Senate chambers – a room in which he served for many years, but never in the gavel-swinging capacity as Lt. Governor. He was asked whether he’s ready for the gavel.

“I’ve been swinging a hammer for a lot of years,” laughed the lifelong farmer/contractor. “I think I can handle a gavel.”

Rodgers said he wasn’t surprised that 18 senators voted for Zuckerman. He speculated that they were mostly Progressives, many of whom had supported an early campaign to win re-election for Zuckerman in the Legislature.

  1. It is always good to see a new truck driver hauling the load. The next question is when will it get delivered and how long will it take. If you do not see a change in direction in the next two months, you will be paying higher property taxes next year.

    • Sometimes thinking positive is better than always going negative! Rogers is a Vermonter and not a crazy leftist progressive and carpetbagger from another state like Zuckerman. We are fortunate he lost. It’s time to give LT. Gov. Rogers a chance before you think you know how he will perform. For one, I see it as a huge improvement. Will he be perfect and satisfy everyone, probably not especially progressives and that is a good start right there.

  2. Congratulations John. You worked hard. Very well deserved and a tremendous step in the right direction.

  3. Good night now maybe we can stop these ridiculous progressive laws and get the state back to common sense politics 🙄

  4. It’s always good to see a fellow home towner do well. Congratulations John Roders. I hope you can make the towns people from Glover proud of you. Even though you have just been elected as Lt Govenor, to me it looks like you now have a clear path to the next level. May God be with you…Give em hell…

  5. VT currently has a lot of problems that need cleaning up, and I don’t mean a broom sweeping the dirt under the carpet, I mean a steam cleaner and then a giant vacuum. Montpelier has yet to learn that they serve The People that voted for a November 5th mandate of common sense. A Constitutional Republic has law & order, borders, ruled by the Constitution, the Truth, serving The People of Vermont. There is a the new mandate of pro-business, less government, less taxes, a prosperous state where our children can actually have a future. The People have said “No to the Climate scam”, which is an evil Marxist/Globalist plan to take our land, houses, private property, our health, our future. There is a line in the sand, The People will not be led to their own demise by the enemies of a Constitutional Republic. It may be that states ruled by “Blue rulers” will need their federal funds cut-off. Stopping the money flow will certainly shake things up. Vermonters could be in for a bumpy ride, but we are tough and we will never give-up the good fight.

Liberty is from God, not man.

  6. I see 18 legislatures decided to ignore the voter’s wishes. Their names need to be published. Congratulations, Mr. Rogers.

  7. Congratulations Mr. Lieutenant Governor Rodgers. Good things are coming to “We The People.”

  8. Why secret ballot? I think it is time to see a lot more of how our legislators have been voting. What happened to all the recorded yeah’s and nay’s on votes. How can “We the People” know if our elected officials are voting for or against us?
