Is Speaker challenge a sign of big VTGOP pickups in the house?

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The only way Sibilia’s candidacy has a chance is with a lot of Republican votes.

It was a surprise this week when Independent Representative Laura Sibilia (I-Dover) announced with two weeks left to go before the November 5 election, that she is challenging the incumbent Speaker of the House, Jill Krowinski (D-Burlington) for the gavel. So many questions! Why now? And why would Sibilia think for even a nanosecond that she could pull this off?

Back at the end of July I wrote a piece titled Speaker Krowinski Feeling the (Clean) Heat about how her agenda with its resulting property tax disaster, the Unaffordable Heat Act fiasco, rising crime, the housing crisis, etc. could not be sitting well with rank and file Democrats who now have to campaign on this record – and their votes to override the vetoes of these unpopular policies by the most popular Governor in the nation, Phil Scott. So now is it becoming clear behind the scenes that a lot of the drones who vote in mindless lockstep with Democrat party leadership are going to pay for that loyalty with their seats?

Let’s look at the calculation Sibilia has to be making here….

There is no way on God’s green earth that if Democrats maintain their overall supermajority in the House – or anything close to it — that a majority of Democrat Representatives would throw Krowinski over the side. She will have been vindicated by their very re-elections.

But a handful of disaffected survivors of November 5 could possibly be persuaded to break party ranks for personal or political reasons. For example, Representative Jay Hooper (D-Randolph) gave an interview on Vermont Daily Chronicle’s Creemee Cast revealing/complaining that under Krowinski’s leadership only about ten people are making meaningful decisions, and the rest of the caucus is not being allowed to participate. Similar sentiments were aired by Representative Caleb Elder (D-Starksboro) as reasons for his leaving the House and running in the primary (unsuccessfully) for a senate seat. But how many folks like this could Sibilia realistically pull away? A dozen? Twenty? Even that seems like a lot.

She would need a total of seventy-six votes to win the Speaker’s chair. Where might they come from? Republicans.

Sure, Republicans could probably be persuaded to jab a stick in the Democrats’ eye by helping to elect a non-Democrat speaker of the House. But currently Republicans only hold thirty-seven seats in the 150-member chamber, which would mean Sibilia would have to convince all of them to vote for her, plus at least thirty-nine Democrats (there are a few Progressives and one incumbent independent other than Sibilia running for re-election, so conceivably maybe thirty-five-or-six Democrats). That gap is, in my humble opinion, a bridge way too far.

But every seat Republicans pick up closes that gap. And to get into Sibilia’s sweet spot of needing just twelve to twenty Dem defectors, that would mean Republicans would have to pick up somewhere in the neighborhood of nineteen (19) to twenty-seven (27) House seats. Which begs the question, is that what Sibilia and her co-conspirators (no-doubt she has some) in Dem political circles are seeing unfold here?

Rep. Laura Sibilia

I mean, as the old adage goes, if you’re going to strike at the king, you better (metaphorically speaking) kill the king. Sibilia has a pretty good gig thanks to Krowinski as vice chair of the Energy & Environment Committee, and, given her leading advocacy roles on several pieces of key legislation (including the Clean Heat Standard, Renewable Energy Standard, and Pupil Weighting bill; yeah, not the most inspiring resume!), Sibilia is no doubt one of the ten privileged people Jay Hooper referred to. Why risk giving that up? Because if Sibilia fails, Krowinski will — most definitely — “Carlo Rizzi” Sibilia (Godfatherfans will get the reference).

Unless she is seeing a clear path to the Speaker’s podium today, why would Sibilia not wait until after the election to make this move? If the Democrats get blown out, announce your candidacy for Speaker then, which is the usual time for such an announcement. If not, stay put and maintain your bridges unburned.

Maybe this is just a politically suicidal decision born of pure ego and blind ambition. Though Sibilia has a lot of both ego and ambition, she has shown in the past that she has slick political instincts for getting ahead despite a truly horrible policy track record. Often this has involved an astutely wetted finger that allows her to move with and ahead of the political winds, which I’m guessing she sees switching from left to right, perhaps in a bigger way than most outside observers anticipate

  1. Roper’s musings about sibilia are interesting. The enemy of my enemy is not my friend- and it remains to be seen where the Vermont legislature will be, come Jan. 2025. krowinski, sibilia or any other “leader” in the house is unconcerned with Vermont and it’s people- their only focus is their agenda, as set forth by the donor class that support them. sibilia’s announcement might only be that she is dissatisfied with the current speed of Vermont’s transition to marxism and ego compels her to run to show us how quickly she can descend Vermont into dystopia.
Roper has done more than any other to warn of the GWSA, un-affordable heat act and coming legislative takeover of transportation fuels, we shall find out if enough voters paid attention very soon. I suspect 2025 will see a NET migration out of Vermont of taxpayers and blue-collar workers- especially skilled trades.

  2. She probably knows she will lose her prestigous committee assignment if the Dems take a hit in this election due to the policies she has pushed through. It is a sad irony that is she is running unopposed. If anyone deserves a serious opponent it is Sibilia. Putting her out to pasture would have been a kindness. Now she has to figure out how to save her skin.

I would like to think another scenario might play out. The Republicans pick up enough seats to put Rep. Anne Donahue’s name forward as Speaker. If she wins reelection as an Independent she could have Republican and Democrat support owing to the enormous bipartisan respect she has earned for her legislative career to date. She might be seen as the true Statesman who is so desparately needed at this point in time.

    • They will not support a true stateman, that is for sure. They will only support someone who will comply to their wishes.

  3. Why would anybody do anything?

Why would anyone run against Governor Scott?

Why would Cynthia Browning go against the collective?

VTDems are entirely oppressive, that doesn’t win any hearts, it does get compliance. It’s not something new that 10 people are making all the decisions in Vermont, even they aren’t “making the decisions” they are being told what to do. And that doesn’t go for just the Dems, the Republicans get their marching orders too, ultimately from the same puppet masters, just different message carriers…aka lobbyists, non-profits, PACs, etc.

I also suspect that many don’t even realize they are puppets, this is going on across the state. People think they are coming together to solve problems and get things done, but you’ll always find a facilitator that is bringing them along with the plan. Affordable housing is the biggest con/example of this going on across the state.

What are we going to do after the election. I think a betting man would say you are giving some false hope. What have they (vtgop) done to make changes? Literally, I have seen, nor heard nothing about this on a statewide basis, at least in Washington county, and that’s with an eye to what is going on politically. I’ve seen lots of democratic stuff going on.

See if you can find someone that would bet you $10 the VTGOP is going to win a senate majority.

See if you can find someone who’d bet $100, $500 that the VTGOP would win a senate majority, please tell me who that person is, I’d love to place a bet, and I’d wager much more than $500.

You are posing a pipe dream, every republican and Vermonter knows this, matters not the party.

  4. Posted this on VDC’s article “Independent Sibilia announces run for House Speaker”
Sibilia has been in VT politics since 2014, 10 years. That’s too long as they get entrenched into that political thinking People “serving” (?) should not be in government more than 6 years and give others to serve with new ideas and principle. Also lobbists can’t influence them as much. Given 6 years perhaps they can truly represent the people in their district. Power shouldn’t have a chance to corrupt given a limited time frame. Likewise need only two Senators per county, being 28 and no district can control VT as the Burlington / Washington areas do. Current government and MVRA Make Vermont Real Again.

Also posted on the VDC article “Uncovered: In 2017, Kamala Harris praised Soros-Funded prosecutor”
Soros has his corrupt mind / fingers / money / influence / some 15 non-profits / plan parenthood and everything that he can destroy America with, his son Alex follows suit and this will spew their crap for many years. Dem / Libs love the guy. I noticed that some VT Dems running for re-election are with Plan Parenthood being Sibilia, and Krowinski. I haven’t looked into other bios in VT. He has also influenced various states DA’s and Prosecutors and henceforth the legal system. I suspect he was involved taking down of the historical monuments being part of America’s history. If any D/P or other has received any of Soros money, they should be expelled from government.

Time for a change and allow only two Senators per county, stop majority bulling
