Burlington police are investigating a reported gunfire incident that prompted a large response late Monday night on North Winooski Avenue.

Officers were called to the area of North Winooski Avenue and Grant Street at about 9:36 p.m. on Dec. 22 after receiving multiple reports of gunshots. Witnesses also reported seeing several people running from the area, police said.

As officers arrived, they located and detained three people of interest. Investigators later recovered ballistic and firearm-related evidence from the scene.

Following the initial investigation, police arrested Nathan Washington, 46, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Washington was cited to appear in court on Jan. 6, at 8:30 a.m. on charges of reckless endangerment and being a person prohibited from possessing firearms.

A second suspect, Shelly Sanders, 42, of Burlington, was arrested and lodged at the Northwest State Correctional Facility on an unrelated arrest warrant, according to police.

Authorities said the incident is believed to be isolated and involved individuals who knew one another. No injuries were reported.

The case remains under active investigation by the Burlington Police Department’s Detective Services Bureau. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Erica Schaller at 802-540-2282 or by email at eschaller@bpdvt.org.

  1. If gun-grabbing liberals were authentic about their concerns for preventing gun violence, they would insist on strict sentencing for federally-prohibited persons who have violent felonies in their past and insist on playing with guns in a dangerous manner. Those from the City of Brotherly Shove now think of Burlington as tolerating the same culture of violent conflict resolution as they are accustomed to in their own urban hellhole. Congratulations Burlington for your zeal in the celebration of tolerance and diversity.

  2. You people in Burlington need to do your business in St. Albans town where we are a little better at dealing with things.

    • It’s a fine line between good police intuition and what some refer to as racial profiling…

  3. Let me guess. It’s time for MORE gun laws even though these two men, who shouldn’t have them, got them anyways. Let’s punish law abiding citizens some more.
