Governor Phil Scott’s office insists Vermont is in full compliance with federal immigration law despite the Department of Homeland Security declaring Thursday night the whole State of Vermont as a ‘Sanctuary Jurisdiction.’

“Vermont maintains full compliance with federal law while protecting the Constitutional rights of citizens and the State,” wrote the Governor’s Press Secretary Amanda Wheeler yesterday by email. She continued, “This means, Vermont doesn’t stand in the way of the federal government carrying out federal immigration laws in Vermont.”

The recent announcement has raised questions about what sort of consequences there would be for cities and states defying federal law, some questioning if this meant there would be a loss of federal funds, while others saying this potentially would mean arrests of officials in sanctuary jurisdictions.

Last month, when asked on whether the administration would possibly arrest sanctuary city leaders who defy Trump’s mass deportation agenda, Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, responded “Wait till you see what’s coming.”

A few days later, Homan doubled-down on his statement, telling reporters, “I meant what I said. You can not support what we’re doing. And you can support sanctuary cities if that’s what you want to do. But if you cross that line of impediment or knowingly harboring and concealing an illegal alien, that is a felony. And we’ll treat it as such.”

“Advocates with the Vermont Asylum Assistance Project said 10 construction workers were detained by ICE in Newport on Thursday,” wrote WCAX Friday afternoon. “It’s part of what they fear is the Trump administration’s doubling down on enforcement.”

The whole state of Vermont and the cities of Burlington, Montpelier, and Winooski have been labeled as ‘Sanctuary Jurisdictions’ by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and now face federal funding cuts under President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

Yesterday, Burlington Mayor Emma Mulveney Stanak issued a statement  in response to the recent DHS announcement writing, “Burlington, like other communities identified as sanctuary jurisdictions, has a proud history of welcoming immigrants and refugees to our City, and we will not back down from ensuring the safety of all who live, work and visit our community.”

The Governor has previously insisted Vermont is in compliance with federal immigration law regarding sanctuary cities and states, and so has Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak.

The DHS list, prompted by Executive Order 14287 signed by President Trump on April 28, identifies states and local jurisdictions that fail to comply with federal immigration laws.

“Sanctuary jurisdictions including cities, counties, and states that are deliberately and shamefully obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws endangering American communities,” says the DHS website.  “Sanctuary cities protect dangerous criminal aliens from facing consequences and put law enforcement in peril.”

Vermont also holds suspected illegal immigrants in state prisons at the request of federal officials.

Burlington, Vermont’s largest city, has policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities, such as restricting local law enforcement from sharing information with ICE, aligning with the state’s overall illegal immigrant-friendly stance.

A 2017 state law forbids Vermont police from cooperating with ICE on immigration actions, which are regarded as civil and not criminal matters. Vermont police do cooperate with federal authorities on violations of criminal law, Scott Administration spokespersons say.

Vermont’s inclusion marks it as one of 15 entire states labeled as sanctuaries, alongside states like California, New York, and Massachusetts, potentially risking federal funding cuts under Trump’s executive order.

  1. How smart are these leaders of “Sanctuary cities”?? I always thought when you wanted to hide someone you wouldn’t broadcast where you hid them, but isn’t that what these leaders of “Sanctuary cities” are doing!! HEY!!! We’re a sanctuary city all the illegal Immigrants are right here in our ““Sanctuary city” no need to look any further we have all corralled up right here!! Stupid idiots!

  2. Why is Governor Scott lying? He knows Vermont is non-compliant. If he wants to invite persons from other countries to live in Vermont, then help them to be here legally.

Does he think we are all stupid and not paying attention? Scott betrays Vermonters by diluting and diminishing U.S. Citizenship. Scott betrays Vermont Taxpayers by using state tax monies to break Federal Law.

Vermont Elected Officials including Scott has been ignoring Federal Immigration Laws for years. They think they can twist and manipulate words and actions so they can do what they want and pretend they are compliant.

Vermont is a known sanctuary state – This is ILLEGAL by Federal Law

Vermont invites illegal aliens and harbors them with housing, food, medical, work, education, legal, etc. – This is ILLEGAL by Federal Law

Vermont issues driver licenses to illegal aliens – This is ILLEGAL by Federal Law

Vermont allows illegal aliens to vote – This is ILLEGAL and violates the U.S. and Vermont’s Constitutionally declared voting requirements of U.S. Citizenship

It’s time to OWN IT SCOTT!! Be a REAL LEADER and fix the mess you made!!

    • Re: It’s time to OWN IT SCOTT!! Be a REAL LEADER and fix the mess you made!!

How can he be a real leader when he is not even a real Republican. The Commicrats that voted for him installed him so they could say, Look Vermont has a Republican governor, when all along they are controlling him. No real conservative voted for him after we found out he was a backstabber. He has no power he is as useless as Joe Biden.

And the Vermont Republican Party props him up and goes along with the charade instead of giving the citizens an America First candidate for governor because they have been infiltrated with RINOS. Are you listening Paul Dame?

Why send a wolf when a weasel will do.

  3. i guess the city he stays in most of the time isn’t in Vermont now.

  4. Headline fixed:

Governor Scott’s office insists Vermont is in full defiance of federal immigration law

  5. Again this shows Scott either dosen’t know or he lying…………… Deep blue Vermont is following the lefts agenda and Scott knows it !!

    Wake up people

  6. Is the new buzz phrase – the gaslighting 101 – the absolute liar, liar pants on fire, withcraft word craft: “protecting Constitutional rights of all Vermonters?” Those uttering it are the same twisted tongues that mandated and coerced experimental, toxic pharma sludge into the veins of Vermonters. The same twisted tongues who created a State DEI Department and a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (should be named the Lies and Retaliation Commission.) Those Acts of enormity violate all civil rights on our dimes! Did Scott’s nose get just a little bigger, a little redder, a little more indicitive of hitting the scotch a little too hard, too often?

May 13, 2025 Press Release Office of the Vermont Attorney General:

“Charity Clark, with a coalition of 19 attorneys general, today filed two separate lawsuits against the Trump administration for attempting to illegally coerce their states into sweeping immigration enforcement by threatening to withhold billions of dollars in federal funding nationwide for emergency services and infrastructure.

Attorney General Clark and the coalition filed one lawsuit against the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. A second lawsuit was filed against the Department of Transportation (DOT) and DOT Secretary Sean Duffy. Each federal agency has imposed unconstitutional, sweeping conditions that would require the states and state agencies to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement efforts or lose out on billions of federal dollars used to protect public safety and transportation infrastructure.

“The federal government is responsible for enforcing immigration law, not the states, and Vermont law is clear about how local and state law enforcement agencies may interact with federal immigration officials. Our limited resources focus law enforcement on public safety in our communities,” said Attorney General Clark. “The Trump administration is violating the Constitution, threatening to deny Vermont access to over $12 million in Congressionally approved funding in order to force Vermont to betray its own values and turn its back on its immigrant communities.”

Today’s lawsuits are the sixteenth and seventeenth cases Attorney General Clark has brought against the Trump administration since President Trump took office in January. For more information on actions taken by the Attorney General on behalf of Vermonters…”

  7. Free popcorn, grass fed butter, brewers yeast…..a bit of salt, watch the largest, slow moving train wreck, coming down the tracks.
